An analysis of the physical and germination parameters of the sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Benedetti,Susana; González,Marta; García,Edison; Quiroz,Iván.
This study analyzed the physical characteristics, number of seeds per kilogram, seed weight, germination characteristics, germination percentage, germination energy, germination period and the germination vigor of sweet chestnut seeds from two forest plantations in the Los Ríos region of Chile. No significant differences were found in any of the characteristics related to the collection zone. Following the international classification systems for seeds of this species, the values of the physical characteristics allow us to classify these seeds as a small caliber or "chestnut". The values of the germination characteristics (>80%) demonstrate a good germination for chestnut seeds of forest origin.

Association between biometric characteristics of tomato seeds and seedling growth and development Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Peñaloza,Patricia; Durán,José María.
Background The size and weight of tomato seeds depend on genetics and can be modified by environment and management. In some species, a strong relation has been described between physical aspects of the seeds and the quality of the corresponding seedlings, but this cannot be considered a general rule. The objective of this research was to identify any association between the biometric characteristics of tomato seeds and the growth and development of their seedlings. Results A total of 18 lots of hybrid tomato seeds were used (from indeterminate plants with round fruits), belonging to six varieties from two reproduction seasons. Each lot was evaluated for seed size and weight, and seed quality, in terms of the germination test (5 and 14 d after sowing). The...

Boron dynamics related to fruit growth and seed production in kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa, cv. Hayward) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Sotomayor,Carlos; Norambuena,Paulina; Ruiz,Rafael.
The effect of foliar boron treatments on fruit growth and seed development in Actinidia deliciosa, cv. Hayward, was studied. The distal leaves (BH) or fowers (BF) of a shoot were sprayed with 500 mg L-1 boric acid during the fowering period. The mobility of boron from the leaves to the fowers through the phloem was determined by spraying only the leaves. From 0 to 96 h after treatment, leaves and fowers were sampled and total boron was assessed. At harvest time, fruit weight and diameter plus seed weight and number were measured for the different treatments. The weight of fruits growing from shoots with boron-treated leaves were 14.1% higher than the control, while the weight of fruits derived from boron-treated fowers was 17% higher than that of fruits...

Efeitos de epoca e numero de aplicacoes foliares de benomil sobre a qualidade da semente de soja. Repositório Alice
HENNING, A. A.; HARE, W. W..

Effects of temperature wild chili pepper (Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum) germination grown under two light conditions Acta Agron. (Palmira)
López-España,Ricardo Guillermo; López-Hernández,Evaristo Rogaciano; Hernández-Morales,Teresa; Charrez-Cruz,Angelica; Guzmán,Yesenia González; Muñoz-Jimarez,Norberto Alfonso; Ortiz-Quintero,Jorge Alfredo.
Abstract The populations of wild chili pepper (Capsicum annuum var. glabriusculum) are a genetic valuable resource and the knowledge of the germinative ability, is of great importance for its management and conservation. The effects of the temperature on germination of wild chili grown in two environment of light, and the relation with the weight of 100 seeds of five populations of wild chili of the Northwest of Mexico, were recorded. The mother plants grown in greenhouse conditions with 50 and 100 % of solar light. The treatments applied in the germination cameras matched: Fluctuating temperature (25-35 ºC) and constant temperature (25 ºC). The treatment variables were the following: percentage of final germination and mean germination time (T50). These...

Mapping and stability of QTLs for seed weight in common beans under different environments. Repositório Alice
MELO, L. C.; SANTOS, J. B. dos; FERREIRA, D. F..
The objectives were: 1 - to identify, under different environments, RAPD markers linked to loci that control the 100 seed weight of common beans; 2 - to evaluate the existence of interactions involving QTL's with planting dates and locations; 3 - to compare detection procedures of markers linked to QTL's utilizing the methods of mapping and multiple regression. One hundred and minety-six recombinant inbred lines derived from the cross of cultivars Carioca x Flor de Mayo were evaluated under two tradtional sowing dates for common beans in 1996, 1997 and 1998, in Lavras and Patos de Minas, Brazil. For the phenotypic evaluation of the families, seven field experiments were conduced. The experimental design used was a 14 x 14 partially balanced Square Simple...
