Rosas-López,Ulises; Collazo-Ortega,Margarita.
The effect of different combinations of chemical scarification, soaking and substrates (ex vitro and in vitro) on seed germination ofPolaskia chichipe (Goss.) Backeberg and Echinocactus platyacanthus Link & Otto fa. grandis (Rose) Bravo-Hollis, collected in the Tehuacan Valley, Mexico, were studied. The P chichipe seeds did not require either chemical scarification or soaking, whereas E platyacanthus required chemical scarification with strong acids. Growth and maintenance of the seedlings was evaluated in two different concentrations of Murashige-Skoog medium (50% and 100% of their components). It was found that MS 50% stimulated germination in both species and promoted seedling growth.

Effect of atmospheric CO2 enrichment on the establishment of seedlings of Jatobá, Hymenaea Courbaril L. (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae) Biota Neotropica
Aidar,M.P.M.; Martinez,C.A.; Costa,A.C.; Costa,P.M.F.; Dietrich,S.M.C.; Buckeridge,M.S..
Plants grown in elevated CO2 environments may exhibit photosynthetic acclimation or down regulation, which is characterised by reduced rates of photosynthesis. In most cases of CO2-induced photosynthetic acclimation, the reduced rates of photosynthesis were still higher than those detected in plants growing at ambient CO2 concentrations. In this work we present a study on the behaviour of seedlings of Hymenaea courbaril, a late secondary/climax species that is one of the most important trees in mature tropical forests of the Americas. After germination, the seedling of H. courbaril increases its rate of growth due to the mobilisation of massive amounts of a storage cell wall polysaccharide (xyloglucan) from its cotyledons. In our experiments, germinated...

Effect of light and temperature on germination and early growth of Vochysia tucanorum Mart., Vochysiaceae, in cerrado and forest soil under different radiation levels Rev. Bras. Bot.
BARBOSA,ANDRÉA RODRIGUES; YAMAMOTO,KIKYO; VALIO,IVANY F. M..
Vochysia tucanorum Mart. (Vochysiaceae) is a very widely distributed species in the cerrado and forests in Brazil, from the State of Bahia to Paraná. Its seed germination was analysed under eight treatments using different conditions of light and temperature. Up to 73 days, at least ca. 93% of the seeds germinated in all treatments, except under alternating temperatures of 35°/10°C (62%). Light enhanced germination, except under constant temperature of 25°C when seeds are not photoblastic. At this temperature, the highest percentage of germination was found. Initial vegetative growth was analysed by comparing the effects of shading, by means of different percentages of full daylight (100%, 45%, 10.6%, 4.8%), and soils from cerrado and forest. During 123...

Effects of salinity on seed germination, seedling growth and survival of Spartina ciliata Brong Acta Botanica
Cordazzo,César Vieira.
The effects of different salinities on the germination of Spartina ciliata seeds were tested during 40 days in the laboratory, using six concentrations of NaCl (0,45, 80, 130, 170 and 215 mM) besides three concentrations of seawater (25,30 and 35‰). In addition, the survival and growth of seedlings were tested in five constant salinity regimes (0,45, 80 and 170 mM NaCl) as well as in five regimes of simulating seawater overwash. The results showed that seeds possed a high germination capacity over a wide range of salinities (0 to 215 mM NaCl). Although concentrations close to full-strength seawater completely inhibited seed germination, the transfer of the ungerminated seeds to freshwater immediately stimulated this. The effects of salinity on seedling...

Exploring Herbicidal Potential of Aqueous Extracts of Some Herbaceous Plants Against Parthenium Weed Planta Daninha
SAFDAR,M.E.; TANVEER,A.; KHALIQ,A.; ALI,H.H.; BURGOS,N.R..
To assess the phytotoxic potential of Achyranthes aspera, Alternanthera philoxeroides, Datura metel and Rumex dentatus against Parthenium hysterophorus, 5% (w/v on dry weight basis) aqueous extracts from root, stem, leaf, flower and whole plant were tested through a Petri plate-based germination and pot-cultured seedling bioassays. Achyranthes aspera and A. philoxeroides inhibited parthenium weed germination more than extracts from other species. Whole plant, leaf and fruit extracts of A. aspera reduced the germination percentage (5%); leaf extract from A. philoxeroides caused lower germination index (0.4), higher mean germination time (14 d) and longer time to 50% germination (13.5 d) of parthenium weed. In the foliar spray bioassay, A. aspera reduced...

Modeling the Emergence and Growth of Alligatorweed at Different Field Capacity Levels Planta Daninha
AHMAD,T.; TANVEER,A.; NADEEM,M.A.; YASEEN,M..
ABSTRACT: A study focusing on different field capacity levels was planned in the Weed Science Lab, Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture Faisalabad. Fresh alligatorweed was harvested from the Agronomy fields and cuttings (2 cm length) were made from it. These cuttings were placed at 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% field capacity levels in pots for 25 days. The results of the experiments revealed that at all field capacity levels, fragments of alligatorweed were able to sprout and grow. Increased moisture levels significantly increased the emergence ability and survival of the alligatorweed plants upto a certain level. Compared with the control (25% FC), emergence time of the sprouts in the maximum moisture regime (100% of FC) decreased by 40% (12.94...

PHENOLICS IN TWO Alternanthera SPECIES RESIDUES AFFECT THE GERMINATION AND EARLY SEEDLING GROWTH OF RICE (Oryza sativa) Planta Daninha
MEHMOOD,A.; TANVEER,A.; NADEEM,M.A.; MAQBOOL,R.; ALI,H.H..
ABSTRACT Alternanthera species are invasive aquatic/semi-aquatic weeds posing a serious threat to agro-biodiversity in several countries in the world. The present study was conducted to assess the phytotoxic effects of Alternanthera philoxeroides and A. sessilis residues on emergence and early seedling growth traits of rice (Oryza sativa). Soil was prepared with 4% (w/w) Alternanthera species residues separately and allowed to decay for 0, 15 and 30 days. Rice emergence was significantly decreased but increase in mean emergence time and time to 50% emergence was observed in soils modified with Alternanthera species residues compared with seed sown in unmodified soils. Rice emergence was reduced to 50-67% and 52-75% by A. sessilis and A. philoxeroides,...

Responses of two températe evergreen Nothofagus species to sudden and gradual waterlogging: relationships with distribution patterns RChHN
PIPER,FRIDA; ZÚÑIGA-FEEST,ALEJANDRA; ROJAS,PAULINA; ALBERDI,MIREN; CORCUERA,LUIS J; LUSK,CHRISTOPHER H.
The effects of gradual waterlogging on trees have been little studied. The températe evergreens Nothofagus nítida and N. dombeyi are differentially distributed on soil moisture gradients, only the former being common on poorly-drained sites. We compared the relative height growth rate (RGR H) and foliage loss of seedlings subjected experimentally to normal drainage (soil at field capacity), sudden waterlogging and gradual waterlogging for two months to determine which waterlogging regime more accurately predicts interspecific differences in tolerance, as evident from natural distributions. RGR H was similar between species but differed between treatments (normal watering > gradual waterlogging = sudden waterlogging). Sudden waterlogging caused massive...
