3-D active source tomography around Simeulue Island offshore Sumatra: Thick crustal zone responsible for earthquake segment boundary ArchiMer
Tang, Genyang; Barton, Penny J.; Mcneill, Lisa C.; Henstock, Timothy J.; Tilmann, Frederik; Dean, Simon M.; Jusuf, Muhammad D.; Djajadihardja, Yusuf S.; Permana, Haryadi; Klingelhoefer, Frauke; Kopp, Heidrun.
We present a detailed 3-D P-wave velocity model obtained by first-arrival travel-time tomography with seismic refraction data in the segment boundary of the Sumatra subduction zone across Simeulue Island, and an image of the top of the subducted oceanic crust extracted from depth-migrated multi-channel seismic reflection profiles. We have picked P-wave first arrivals of the air-gun source seismic data recorded by local networks of ocean-bottom seismometers, and inverted the travel-times for a 3-D velocity model of the subduction zone. This velocity model shows an anomalous zone of intermediate velocities between those of oceanic crust and mantle that is associated with raised topography on the top of the oceanic crust. We interpret this feature as a...

A FELDOLGOZOTT FUNKCIONÁLIS ÉLELMISZEREK FOGYASZTÓI SZEGMENTÁLÁSA ÉS MAGATARTÁSI JELLEMZŐI AgEcon
Lehota, Jozsef; Komaromi, Nandor.
A primer kutatásunk 1060 fős 15 év feletti országos reprezentatív mintára épült. Az adatbázist az eredeti változók alapján K-közép módszerrel klasztereztük. A hazai funkcionális élelmiszerfogyasztókat 5 szegmensbe soroltunk be, amelyeket összehasonlítottunk és jellemeztünk....

A structuralist approach in the study of evolution and classification Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A survey is given of structuralism as a method that can be applied in the study of evolution and classification. The results of a structuralist approach are illustrated by examples from the laws underlying numerical changes, from the laws underlying changes in the chelicerate life-cycle, and from the laws underlying the evolution of the chelicerate appendages. Suggestions are given for the study of the laws underlying the transformation of form, and some notes are made on structuring forces and the early stages of organic evolution. Some concluding remarks are finally made on deep structure, phylogenetic classification and evolution.

ACEITAÇÃO E SEGMENTAÇÃO DO MERCADO DE PRODUTOS DERIVADOS DA CARNE DE PERU AgEcon
Pulici, Rodrigo; Alves, Flavio Rocha; Gameiro, Augusto Hauber.

Analysis of calibrated seafloor backscatter for habitat classification methodology and case study of 158 spots in the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea ArchiMer
Fezzani, Ridha; Berger, Laurent.
An automated signal-based method was developed in order to analyse the seafloor backscatter data logged by calibrated multibeam echosounder. The processing consists first in the clustering of each survey sub-area into a small number of homogeneous sediment types, based on the backscatter average level at one or several incidence angles. Second, it uses their local average angular response to extract discriminant descriptors, obtained by fitting the field data to the Generic Seafloor Acoustic Backscatter parametric model. Third, the descriptors are used for seafloor type classification. The method was tested on the multi-year data recorded by a calibrated 90-kHz Simrad ME70 multibeam sonar operated in the Bay of Biscay, France and Celtic Sea, Ireland. It...

CHARACTERISTICS OF DIFFERENT CONSUMER SEGMENTS IN THE AUSTRALIAN BEEF MARKET AgEcon
Morales, Luis Emilio; Griffith, Garry R.; Wright, Vic; Umberger, Wendy J.; Fleming, Euan M..
Beef consumers in Australia have shown differences in their preferences for products and sensitivity to price. This can be explained by the influence on expected quality of cues related to health, production process and eating experience. Eating experience is difficult to predict as consumers generally do not have enough information to form reliable expectations. In this context, branded beef can help to signal quality and reduce the degree of uncertainty that consumers experience when shopping. Focus group research identified different segments, premiums for preferred products and potential for large-scale differentiation and branding in the Australian market.

Consumer Preferences for Quality Foods from a South European Perspective: A Conjoint Analysis Implementation on Greek Olive Oil AgEcon
Krystallis, Athanasios; Ness, Mitchell.
The objective of the present study is to describe the preferences of younger, more educated and higher income Greek consumers for "quality" olive oil brands - quality being defined as a bundle of extrinsic quality cues such as quality assurance labels, health-related information, country-of-origin indication, bottling material and price. The aim of the research is, with the implementation of a conjoint analysis task, to describe and analyze consumer preferences using a random, stratified, sample of urban consumers. The extrinsic quality attributes of olive oil, strongly linked to a previous qualitative, Means-end Chains (MEC) analysis survey, is used as starting points for the development of conjoint profiles. Special emphasis is given to the development...

Consumption patterns in the market of pork and pork products AgEcon
Szakaly, Zoltan; Horvath-Kovacs, Bernadett; Polereczki, Zsolt; Nabradi, Andras.
Pork is a source of nutrients essential for the human body but still it is regarded by consumers as a non-healthy product. The main objective of the study was to analyse consumption patterns concerning pork products and to define alternative target markets in bigger Hungarian towns. In the course of the research, 494 people, representative of the base population, were questioned. According to the results obtained, the consumers’ opinion and the already formed image are less favourable regarding pork than poultry in almost all respects. Respondents regarded pork as an out-of-date, slightly boring and aging product. The applied cluster analysis identified five different consumer segments. Among them, rational young consumers represent the primary target...

Contribution of automatic classification of sonar images for long term registration ArchiMer
Leblond, Isabelle; Legris, M; Solaiman, B.
This issue handles the ability of using segmentation results of sidescan sonar images for long term registration. This study take a part of AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) navigation problems, particularly to correct the drift of navigation sensors. Principle of images formation with this type of engines and the main properties are first reminded. Some images are shown, which allows us to understand difficulties of this type of data to realise AUV positioning. Then, we decide that segmentation results of sidescan images provide us landscapes on which registration will be able. Segmentation is then explained. It is supervised type on five classes, rocks, ripples, sand, mud and shadow. Using Gabor filters provides classifying parameters and...

Crustal geometry of the northeastern Gulf of Aden passive margin: localization of the deformation inferred from receiver function analysis ArchiMer
Tiberi, C.; Leroy, S.; D'Acremont, E.; Bellahsen, N.; Ebinger, C.; Al-lazki, A.; Pointu, A..
Here we use receiver function analysis to retrieve crustal thickness and crustal composition along the 35-My-old passive margin of the eastern Gulf of Aden. Our aims are to use results from the 3-D seismic array to map crustal stretching across and along the Aden margin in southern Oman. The array recorded local and teleseismic events between 2003 March and 2004 March. Seventy-eight events were used in our joint inversions for Vp/Vs ratio and depth. The major results are: (1) Crustal thickness decreases from the uplifted rift flank of the margin towards the Sheba mid-ocean ridge. We found a crustal thickness of about 35 km beneath the northern rift flank. This value decreases sharply to 26 km beneath the post-rift subsidence zone on the Salalah coastal...

Explaining Variation in Farm and Farm Business Performance in Respect to Farmer Segmentation Analysis AgEcon
Wilson, Paul; Harper, Nicholas; Darling, Richard.
Results from a pilot application of Defra’s segmentation model applied to the Farm Business Survey for England are presented. Interviews with 750 FBS co-operators during 2010, using a discursive approach, classified co-operators into one of five segmentation groups: Custodians (14.0%); Lifestyle Choice (7.2%); Pragmatists (53.3%); Modern Family Business (21.1%); Challenged Enterprises (4.4%). On average, Modern Family Businesses operated the largest land area, achieved the greatest farm financial (and agricultural) output, and Farm Business Income (FBI), whilst the Lifestyle Choice segment returned the lowest average FBI. Variation in regional tendencies across the segmentation groups was observed, with variation also noted for forms of business, LFA and...

Food retailing and prices in Slovenia AgEcon
Bojnec, Stefan.
This paper focuses on agro- food chains and agro- food consumer prices in Slovenia considering its European Union (EU) membership. As the Slovenian agro- food markets were distorted prior to the EU accession with some agro- food prices that were greater than comparable EU prices, the empirical results confirm that with the EU membership Slovenian real agro- food consumer prices have largely downward adjusted. Besides policy changes, internalization of retailing and distribution chains by entries of supermarket s and hypermarket s have had impacts on market structures and rationalization of marketing activities. Supermarket s and hypermarket s are taking over a substantial proportion of retail trade in agro- food products with implications on increasing...

Image Analysis of Oxidative and Glycolytic Muscle Fibers During Reperfusion Injury by Segmentation Based on Regions International Journal of Morphology
Rosero-Salazar,Doris Haydee.
Different situations cause ischemia and reperfusion injury, affecting tissues under the level of compression. In this research, abnormal characteristics in distribution of muscle fibers types in soleus and extensor carpi radialis longus, during short periods of ischemia and short and long periods of reperfusion, were determined. Fibers were classified by enzyme histochemistry techniques NADH-TR and myosin-ATPase. Measurements of areas were carried out through semiautomatic image processing by using segmentation based on regions, which evidenced significant changes in distribution during reperfusion followed to one and three hours of ischemia, as well as in comparisons of areas for all periods of reperfusion. This study strengthens the evidence about using...

Oblique rifting and segmentation of the NE Gulf of Aden passive margin ArchiMer
Fournier, M; Bellahsen, N; Fabbri, O; Gunnell, Y.
The Gulf of Aden is a young, obliquely opening, oceanic basin where tectonic structures can easily be followed and correlated from the passive margins to the active mid-oceanic ridge. It is an ideal laboratory for studies of continental lithosphere breakup from rifting to spreading. The northeastern margin of the Gulf of Aden offers the opportunity to study on land the deformation associated with oblique rifting over a wide area encompassing two segments of the passive margin, on either side of the Socotra fracture zone, exhibiting distinct morphologic, stratigraphic, and structural features. The western segment is characterized by an elevated rift shoulder and large grabens filled with thick synrift series, whereas the eastern segment exhibits low...

Preference study using a latent class approach. Analysis of European preferences for smoked salmon ArchiMer
Semenou, Michel; Courcoux, Philippe; Cardinal, Mireille; Nicod, Huguette; Ouisse, Alexandra.
We present in this paper the advantages of the latent class vector model approach in the analysis of preference ratings. We illustrate the practical application of this methodology on the basis of a preference study of smoked salmons in European countries. A set of 30 samples was selected spanning the characteristic variability of cold-smoked salmon available in six European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom). Consumers from the main countries of consumption (Belgium, France, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom) were asked to rate the acceptability of each product. A quantitative descriptive analysis with a trained panel and physical and chemical measurements of smoked salmons were also conducted. Using a latent...

Preferences, trust and willingness to pay for food information: An analysis of the Italian Market AgEcon
Nocella, Giuseppe; Stefani, Gianluca; Romano, Donato.
Lack of consumer trust and communication strategies are probably the main determinants of information failure in modern food markets. This study attempts to tackle these aspects affecting the quality of food information by investigating questions related to what topics are more relevant to consumers, who should disseminate trustful food information, and how communication should be conveyed. Primary data were collected both through qualitative (in depth interviews and focus groups) and quantitative research. Quantitative research was conducted by means of a questionnaire administered in 2006-2007 to a sample of Italian respondents using both a web and a traditional mail survey. Reading preferences, willingness to pay and trust towards public and private...

Public Policies and the Demand for Vegetables AgEcon
Gustavsen, Geir Waehler; Rickertsen, Kyrre.
Increased consumption of vegetables may reduce obesity and the prevalence of cardiac diseases and cancer. Norwegians consume less vegetables than nutrition experts recommend and the per capita consumption is lower than in most European countries. To investigate the causes of low consumption, a two-step approach is used to estimate the demand segmented by nine different household types. In the first step, a probit model is estimated to investigate the decision whether to purchase traditional vegetables, salad vegetables, and industrially processed vegetables. Conditional on purchase, an almost ideal demand model is used to model how much to purchase. The own-price elasticities and total expenditure elasticities are high for traditional and industrially...

Quality Assurance and other Marketing Management Elements as Key Success Factors for Entering a New Market: a Case Presentation of Functional Food Market in Indonesia AgEcon
Puspa, Jofi; Kuhl, Rainer.
Based on its distinctive profiles functional-food (FF) can be considered as a mixture of food and pharmaceutical items. Apparently, these different characteristics that exist beyond conventional food products contribute success of the commercialization of new innovative FFs. Therefore, assumption can be made by arguing that for the marketing a FF a distinctive marketing-strategic beyond the one usually used for the conventional food products must be employed. This study was pursued with the main aims to understand the consumer’s psychological factors and to find out elements important to setting up the marketing strategy. These two findings will be then used as basis for designing a distinctive marketing strategy for a FF. We found that consumer’s...

Region based variational approach for the segmentation textured sonar images ArchiMer
Karoui, Imen; Fablet, Ronan; Boucher, Jean-marc; Augustin, Jean-marie.
We propose a new region-based segmentation of textured sonar images with respect to seafloor types. We characterize sea-floor types by a set of empirical distributions estimated on texture responses to a set of different filters and we introduce a novel similarity measure between sonar textures in this attribute space. Our similarity measure is defined as a weighted sum of Kullback-Leibler divergences between texture features. The texture similarity measure weight setting is twofold: first we weight each filter, according to its discrimination power, the computation of these weights are issued from the margin maximization criterion, Second, we add an additional weighting, evaluated as an angular distance between the incidence angles of the compared texture...
