Estuaries are areas which, from their structure, their fonctioning, and their localisation, are subject to significant contribution of nutrients. One of the objectif of the RNO, the French network for coastal water quality monitoring, is to assess the levels and trends of nutrient concentrations in estuaries. A linear model was used in order to describe and to explain the total dissolved nitrogen concentration evolution in the three most important estuaries on the Chanel-Atlantic front (Seine, Loire and Gironde). As a first step, the selection of a reliable data set was performed. Then total dissolved nitrogen evolution schemes in estuary environment were graphically studied, and allowed a resonable choice of covariables. The salinity played a major role... |

Eutrophication of the Seine estuary and the Bay of the Seine is a crucial environmental issue for the management of ecosystems and economic activities related to fisheries and tourism. A large quantity of nutrients, especially nitrogen, is brought to the coastal zone by the Seine River, the main input of that area, but also by smaller rivers along the Normandy coast. This large delivery of nitrogen leads to an imbalance between nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and silica (Si), which affects the growth of planktonic organisms and can exacerbate the occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs). These events can be damaging for shellfish fisheries, an important economic resource for the region. The study describes a new modelling chain coupling a riverine and a... |

In order to reproduce and investigate the marine circulation in the coastal tidal zone, and especially its three dimensional nature, it appeared interesting to develop a numerical mode! which could take account of the real bottom topography and the variations of the free surface. Navier-Stokes equations are solved in a straight forward manner, generalizing a finite difference technique already used in two-dimensional vertical models. To test the computational program, the mode! was applied to a number of flat bottom schematic basins, where we reproduced wind driven currents and tide propagation. Then we considered the particular case of a real channel and, finally, density currents associated with a salty wall. Mode) results are compared to theoretical... |

Within the framework of the multi-disciplinary program Seine Aval, phenolic compounds obtained by CuO oxidation have been studied since 1995. Quantitative analyses have shown a terrestrial contribution in flood, characterized by compounds of the group P (polyols + phenol), S (syringic) and H (hydroxybenzoic). During the low water period, phenolic compounds allow a clear distinction between fluvial and estuarine suspended material. Fluvial run-off contained Syringic, Hydroxybenzoic and Vanillic phenols. In contrast, upstream penetrating marine and estuarine waters are characterized by cinnamic phenols originating from estuarine herbus. In the turbidity maximum zone, aerobic degradation of lignin material increases the (vanillic acid/vanillin) ratio. |
