Effectiveness of selection, parent-offspring correlation and regression in bacterial blight resistance genes introgressed rice segregating population Ciência Rural
Govintharaj,Ponnaiah; Tannidi,Shalini; Swaminathan,Manonmani; Sabariappan,Robin.
ABSTRACT: The effectiveness of early generation selection was practiced in bacterial blight resistance genes introgressed F2 and F2:3 population of the cross CB 174 R × IRBB 60 in rice. F2 Selection have been proved to be robust and effective tool in crop improvement program. Selection differential was positive for all studied traits. Selection response was high for number of grains, thus indicating the effectiveness of selection for these character. Realized heritability was found high for number of grains and thousand grain weight, suggested that direct selection was effective. Expected selection response and predicted genetic gain was high for number of grains. Parent-offspring correlation showed low but significance association for number of productive...

Genetic trend estimates for milk yield production and fertility traits of the Girolando cattle in Brazil. Repositório Alice
CANAZA-CAYO, A. W.; COBUCI, J. A.; LOPES, P. S.; TORRES, R. de A.; MARTINS, M. F.; DALTRO, D. dos S.; SILVA, M. V. G. B..
Annual genetic trends and selection differentials for 305-day milk yield (305MY), age at first calving (AFC), and first calving interval (FCI) were estimated by four selection paths [sires of bulls (SB), dams of bulls (DB), sires of cows (SC), and dams of cows (DC)] for Girolando dairy cattle in Brazil. A total of 12,739 lactation records were obtained from the Brazilian Girolando Breeders Association with cows calving in the period from 2000 to 2011. Two periods were involved: the first, from 1979 to 1996, corresponding to the formation and expansion of the herd, and second, from 1997 to 2007, characterized by the implementation of the breeding program of the Girolando breed. The whole period from 1979 to 2007 was also considered. The Wombat program was...

Nutrients from salmon parents alter selection pressures on their offspring ArchiMer
Auer, Sonya K.; Anderson, Graeme J.; Mckelvey, Simon; Bassar, Ronald D.; Mclennan, Darryl; Armstrong, John D.; Nislow, Keith H.; Downie, Helen K.; Mckelvey, Lynn; Morgan, Thomas A. J.; Salin, Karine; Orrell, Danielle L.; Gauthey, Alice; Reid, Thomas C.; Metcalfe, Neil B..
Organisms can modify their surrounding environment, but whether these changes are large enough to feed back and alter their evolutionary trajectories is not well understood, particularly in wild populations. Here we show that nutrient pulses from decomposing Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parents alter selection pressures on their offspring with important consequences for their phenotypic and genetic diversity. We found a strong survival advantage to larger eggs and faster juvenile metabolic rates in streams lacking carcasses but not in streams containing this parental nutrient input. Differences in selection intensities led to significant phenotypic divergence in these two traits among stream types. Stronger selection in streams with low parental nutrient...

Selection index based on phenotypic and genotypic values predicted by REML/BLUP in Papaya Rev. Bras. Frutic.

Abstract Selection of superior genotypes based on the simultaneous responses to different characteristics is a fundamental strategy in plant breeding. This study aimed to compare the efficiency of four selection index constructed using phenotypic and genotypic values in a segregating population of the cultivar Rubi Incaper 511. Eight morpho-agronomic variates and the severity of black-spot and phoma-spot were evaluated under field conditions. The classical selection index were calculated based on non-standardized phenotypic means (NSM), standardized means (SM), and genotypic values predicted by REML/BLUP (GVP), using predetermined economic weights. Additionally, the rank sum (RS) was obtained on the basis of the classification of individuals in these...

Simultaneous age-dependent and age-independent sexual selection in the lekking black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) ArchiMer
Kervinen, Matti; Lebigre, Christophe; Soulsbury, Carl D..
Individuals' reproductive success is often strongly associated with their age, with typical patterns of early-life reproductive improvement and late-life senescence. These age-related patterns are due to the inherent trade-offs between life-history traits competing for a limited amount of resources available to the organisms. In males, such trade-offs are exacerbated by the resource requirements associated with the expression of costly sexual traits, leading to dynamic changes in trait expression throughout their life span. Due to the age dependency of male phenotypes, the relationship between the expression of male traits and mating success can also vary with male age. Hence, using longitudinal data in a lekking species with strong sexual selection - the...
