ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Martin, A; Maggi, Pierre; Berthome, Jean-paul; Langlade, Aime; Bachere, Evelyne.
Discolored waters and human diseases by shellfishes were dominant features of summer 1983 in south coast of Brittany. Vilaine Bay, the most damaged area, was successively affected by brown waters in early June, and diarrhetic intoxications by harvested mussels (July and August), just as DPS producing dinoflagellate (D. acuminata ) reached higher water or mussel guts concentrations than years before. Outspreading in the whole south coast of Brittany and possible relation with hydrological or biological parameters are analyzed.

Gonzalez, Marcelo.
Research on the immune response of oysters is motivated by the problems of infectious diseases potentially found in the farms. Over the course of the last few years, the development of genomic approaches has allowed us to make headway on characterising genes involved in the cup oyster's (Crassostrea gigas) innate immunity, particularly thanks to various programmes for analysing transcriptome, of type EST (Express Sequence Tag) and subtractive banks. Within the context of this work, over the course of which we have used the data from genomic research and we have also developed biochemical approaches, we were particularly interested in studying the proteins involved in reconnaissance reactions to LPS as well as to antimicrobial effectors. In an earlier part,...

Gangnery, Aline.
The total standing stock of bivalves cultured in Thau Lagoon (France) that is mainly constituted of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, and the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, vary between 14,000 and 20,000 tons within a year. These variations were attributed to the rearing cycle of molluscs in the lagoon but also to their growth performances. Oysters cultured in the Thau Lagoon presented the best growth rate ever reported whereas trophic conditions are low : mean concentrations in organic particulate matter and total chlorophyll a averaged 1 mg.l-1 and 1.2 µg.l-1, respectively. The development of a growth model shows that temporal pattern (i.e. seasonality) of bivalve growth is explained by water temperature and spatial pattern is...

Farmed bivalve loss due to seabream predation in the French Mediterranean Prevost Lagoon ArchiMer
Richard, Marion; Forget, Fabien; Mignucci, Alexandre; Mortreux, Serge; Le Gall, Patrik; Callier, Myriam; Weise, Am; Mckindsey, Cw; Bourjea, Jerome.
Bivalve predation by seabream has been observed worldwide and is a major concern for bivalve farmers. Farmed bivalve-seabream interactions must be better understood to ensure the sustainability of bivalve aquaculture. The objectives of this study were to characterize gilthead seabream Sparus aurata presence in a bivalve farm in Prevost Lagoon (Mediterranean Sea) using acoustic telemetry and to evaluate monthly losses of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis and oysters Crassostrea gigas due to seabream predation over an 18 mo period inside the farm and at an unprotected experimental platform. Large (281 to 499 mm TL) seabream were more commonly detected in the bivalve farm than were small (200 to 280 mm TL) seabream. In contrast to small seabream, 90% of large...

Improving detoxification Efficiency of PSP-contaminated oysters (Crassostrea gigas Thunberg) ArchiMer
Lassus, Patrick; Bardouil, Michele; Baron, Regis; Berard, Jean-baptiste; Masselin, Pierre; Truquet, Philippe; Pitrat, Jp.
Shellfish production, and production of marine bivalve molluscs in particular, is the main form of marine aquaculture in the European Union, with a production estimated at 1,200,000 tons in 1999 (Food and Agricultural Organization). Moreover, aquaculture production is rapidly expanding throughout Europe and is becoming a major economic resource in developing areas such as Northern Greece, Ireland, and northwestern Spain. These shellfish, mainly mussels, oysters, and clams, are produced in a natural environment. Due to variations in their environment, these otherwise edible species may however become unsafe for human consumption. Potential problems are amplified due to the nature of shellfish themselves: as they are filter feeders, they consume large...

Laffargue, Pascal.
This thesis aimed to identify and analyse processes involved in the functioning of sole Solea solea (L.) nurseries in the Pertuis Charentais, the most important oyster cultivation basin in Europe and a major nursery for the Bay of Biscay sole. Juveniles concentrate in coastal and estuarine habitats, which are essential in the biological cycle of this species but implies (i) adaptation to environmental variability and (ii), accessibility to habitat resources. Assuming that effective nurseries account for what fish must perform in response to habitat constraints, especially in selecting feeding, resting or refuge areas, we used both field works and mesocosm experiments to obtain integrative indicators of the nursery quality (growth rate, Fulton's condition...

Barille-boyer, Anne-laure; Haure, Joel; Baud, Jean-pierre.
The oyster growth has been studied for a 10 year period, from 1986 to 1995, in four locations of the bay of Bourgneuf (French Atlantic Coast). The relations between oysters growth and the main molluscs stocks (cultivated oysters and wild mussels) or environmental factors (hydrobiology, currents, climatology) are analysed to understand the functioning of this shellfish ecosystem. As the water renewal time is about two months, primary production is essentially autochtonal. Phytoplankton development is controlled by the nutrients brought by the river Loire. An important part of the microalgac is composed by the microphytobenthos resuspended by west wind. High seston concentrations, measured on the North of the bay (150 mg/1 as an average), have a negative...

Cailleres, J.
The germicide properties of ultra-violet radiation in a wave length ranging from 100 to 400 mm were already discovered back in the late 19th century. These properties specific to UV-C radiation (200-280 mm) result from its action on the nucleic acids of the micro-organisms. Each micro-organism, depending on its composition, therefore presents a specific sensitivity to this radiation.

Ultrafiltration for environmental safety in shellfish production: A case of bloom emergence ArchiMer
Cordier, Clémence; Voulgaris, Alexandra; Stavrakakis, Christophe; Sauvade, Patrick; Coelho, Franz; Moulin, Philippe.
The process of ultrafiltration (UF) of natural seawater often encounters the problems of variation in water quality and coastal blooms. To validate the feasibility of UF in shellfish farms, this study compared the hydraulic performance and pollutant removal efficiency of the UF process with those of the commonly used treatments that combine several filtration steps with UV disinfection. The comparison was conducted in the cases of natural seawater and a coastal bloom. Given that the UF process encountered this specific pollution, this study evaluated the filtration performance of the UF process and the retention of total suspended solids (TSS), bacteria, phytoplankton, and zooplankton. A real coastal bloom was considered in the case study of an...
