Aging is a biologic process characterized by progressive damage of structures and functions of organic systems. In gastrointestinal tract, it can involve enteric nervous system, which plays an important role in digestion and absorption of nutrients, causing hastening of intestinal transit thus reducing its absorptive function. The mesenteric artery is a high caliber vessel dependent on the abdominal artery, right below the emergence of the vessels destined for the liver and stomach. The present study aimed to describe the behavior of the arterial vessel in the small intestine of the crab-eating raccoon (Procyon cancrivorus). The animals were collected on highways (roadkill). Cannulation of the abdominal aorta, perfusion with warmed water (40°C) and stained latex injection (Neoprene 450, Dupont do Brasil and Sulvinil stain, Glassuret S.A) were performed, followed by formaldehyde fixation (10%). ABSTRACT This study investigated the effect of broiler breeder age on the morphological development of the small intestine broiler embryos (villus height, crypt depth, microvillus height, and villus density) at 20 day of incubation. Eggs obtained from 30- and 60-wk-old broiler breeders were used. The results showed that embryos from older broiler breeders presented longer villi in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum compared with younger broiler breeders. In addition, embryos from older broiler breeders presented deeper crypts in the jejunum and ileum, longer microvilli in jejunal enterocytes, and lower villus density (microvillus number/mm2) in the duodenum and ileum than younger breeders. ABSTRACT Many kinds of feed additives can be used in chicken diets to stimulate intestinal morphological maturation and, consequently, intestinal function. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of zeolite on broiler performance, gut morphology and gut digestive enzyme activity. The one-day old broiler chickens Ross 308 were assigned randomly into 3 groups with 30 birds per treatment. ABSTRACT The present study was conducted to evaluate whether dietary hot pepper waste powder (HPWP) would affect the performance and small intestine histology parameters in Japanese quail chicks. Microfold (M) cells act as antigen-sampling sites for initiating antigen specific mucosal immune responses, but they may also provide a gateway for enteropathogen entry. In this study we demonstrated villous M cells by morphological and immunohistochemical methods to be present in the three regions of the small intestine from newborn piglets. Immunohistochemical analysis, using anti- cytokeratin 18 (CK18) primary antibodies, showed a gradually decreased density of M cells from the lower crypt epithelium to the upper villous epithelium.
