Characteristics of Individuals Afflicted by AIDS-related Mortality in Zambia AgEcon
Chapoto, Antony; Jayne, Thomas S..
Studies conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa during the 1980s generally found a positive correlation between socioeconomic characteristics such as education, income, and wealth and subsequent contraction of HIV. However, as the disease has progressed, the relationship between socioeconomic status and HIV contraction may have changed in many areas of Sub Saharan Africa, although there is little hard evidence to support this. This paper seeks to determine the ex ante socioeconomic characteristics of individuals who die between the ages of 15 to 59 years of age, using nationally representative panel data on 18,821 individuals surveyed in 2001 and 2004 in rural Zambia. The findings from this study will help policy-makers and development agencies better...

Clustering of psychiatric and somatic illnesses in the general population: multimorbidity and socioeconomic correlates BJMBR
Andrade,L.H.; Benseñor,I.M.; Viana,M.C.; Andreoni,S.; Wang,Y.-P..
The distribution of psychiatric disorders and of chronic medical illnesses was studied in a population-based sample to determine whether these conditions co-occur in the same individual. A representative sample (N = 1464) of adults living in households was assessed by the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, version 1.1, as part of the São Paulo Epidemiological Catchment Area Study. The association of sociodemographic variables and psychological symptoms regarding medical illness multimorbidity (8 lifetime somatic conditions) and psychiatric multimorbidity (15 lifetime psychiatric disorders) was determined by negative binomial regression. A total of 1785 chronic medical conditions and 1163 psychiatric conditions were detected in the population...

Farmers in Low Socioeconomic Status Counties Enroll Less Land, Receive Less CRP Funding Per Acre AgEcon
Ueda, Kohei; Hand, Michael S.; Farrigan, Tracey L..
Participation in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is associated with a number of farm and operator characteristics. But casual observation suggests that socioeconomic status is also correlated with program enrollment outcomes. This study examines the relationship between county-level socioeconomic status and participation patterns in CRP, while controlling for other factors that typically impact program enrollment. Result suggest that farms in low socioeconomic status counties are less likely to participate, enroll a smaller share of their land, and receive less per acre enrolled.

Gender, race and socioeconomic influence on diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders in the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) BJMBR
Olmos,R.D.; Figueiredo,R.C. de; Aquino,E.M.; Lotufo,P.A.; Bensenor,I.M..
Thyroid diseases are common, and use of levothyroxine is increasing worldwide. We investigated the influence of gender, race and socioeconomic status on the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders using data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil), a multicenter cohort study of civil servants (35-74 years of age) from six Brazilian cities. Diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction was by thyrotropin (TSH), and free thyroxine (FT4) if TSH was altered, and the use of specific medications. Multivariate logistic regression models were constructed using overt hyperthyroidism/hypothyroidism and levothyroxine use as dependent variables and sociodemographic characteristics as independent variables. The frequencies of overt hyper- and...

Moving Beyond Income: Neighborhood Structure, Household Behavior, and Children's Health in the United States AgEcon
Rahman, Tauhidur; Aradhyula, Satheesh V..
Using insights from economics, pediatrics, psychology, and sociology, this paper examines the effects of income, income inequality, participation in religious services, maternal health, breastfeeding, household smoking, neighborhood characteristics, and racial/ethnic composition of population on child health. Using aggregate data on children's health and well-being for 50 U.S. states derived from the National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH, 2005), we document the following results: (1) neighborhood characteristics are a more powerful predictor of children's health than income; (2) there is a large effect of mother's health on children's health; (3) the independent effect of income inequality on children's health vary across domains of child health...

Alves,Marina C; Matoso,Ester S; Peil,Roberta MN.
ABSTRACT Strawberry production in the south part of Rio Grande do Sul has already been consolidated and, recently, this production has undergone several changes in its cultivation system. The profile of the strawberry producers in this region, and the cultivation systems they use, considering socioeconomic and technological characterization, had not been formally studied since then. This study aimed to characterize the socioeconomic profile of producers, as well as the strawberry production system. Data were obtained through a questionnaire, with questions related to the socioeconomic aspects of the producers and the technical aspects of their cultivation systems. Most of the interviewed producers are male, 26-50 years old, owing up to 20 hectares land,...
