24-h variation in soil respiration after a long dry season in a Sudano-Sahelian region Scientia Agricola
Yemadje,Pierrot Lionel; Guibert,Hervé; Blavet,Didier; Olina,Jean-Paul; Chevallier,Tiphaine; Deleporte,Philippe; Bernoux,Martial.
Soil respiration is a major component of the global carbon cycle which links ecosystems and the atmosphere. To evaluate the reaction of soil respiration after wetting, during a dry period, soil respiration and associated environmental factors were measured over a 24-h period, during the dry season in North Cameroon after wetting the soil. Over 24-h, soil respiration rates followed a quadratic curve during the day coming close to linear at night, while soil temperature and moisture together explained at least 73 % of the variations during the 24-h observed. These soil respiration rates increased during the morning, peaked between 11h00 and 13h00 and then decreased gradually to the minimum around 06h00. These observations were used to propose a method for...

Beans cultivation and water regime on soil physical attributes CIGR Journal
Domingues, Rafael; Pereira, André Belmont; Pires, Luiz Fernando; Schiebelbein, Luis Miguel; Barbosa, Eduardo Augusto Agnellos; Auler, André Carlos.
Beans crop is an agricultural staple largely consumed in Brazil because it is part of the basic food of the population. Such a crop is usually grown by small growers and turns out to be of a great social and economical importance. The aim of the current manuscript was to scrutinize the effect of soil water status on its physical attributes, such as bulk density, total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, hydraulic conductivity under protected environment conditions on beans crop (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The effect of the soil physical attributes on the biological response of the plants was also investigated. The experiment was installed in March of 2016 in a greenhouse. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial scheme with four...

Calibration and study of soil physical-hydric relations using a frequency domain reflectometry probe CIGR Journal
Duarte, Thiago; Silva, Tonny José Araújo da; Bonfim-Silva, Edna Maria; Souza, Hanna Pricilla Barbosa.
The FDR Diviner 2000® probe is widely used to monitor soil moisture and to study physical-hidric relationships. The calibration equation provided by the manufacturer may not correctly reproduce the actual moisture value for the same type of soil with different bulk densities. In addition, it was postulated in this experiment that the capacitance probe can be used to determine the soil water tension and the initial soil water retention curve. Thus, the objectives were: to assess whether the calibration equation parameters of the FDR probe changes with the bulk density variation; estimate the soil water tension using the FDR probe; and verify the effect of the probe calibration in determining the initial soil water retention curve for the Red Oxisol at three...

Chavez,Luis Fernando; Amado,Telmo Jorge Carneiro; Bayer,Cimélio; La Scala,Newton Junior; Escobar,Luisa Fernanda; Fiorin,Jackson Ernani; Campos,Ben-Hur Costa de.
Agricultural soils can act as a source or sink of atmospheric C, according to the soil management. This long-term experiment (22 years) was evaluated during 30 days in autumn, to quantify the effect of tillage systems (conventional tillage-CT and no-till-NT) on the soil CO2-C flux in a Rhodic Hapludox in Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil. A closed-dynamic system (Flux Chamber 6400-09, Licor) and a static system (alkali absorption) were used to measure soil CO2-C flux immediately after soybean harvest. Soil temperature and soil moisture were measured simultaneously with CO2-C flux, by Licor-6400 soil temperature probe and manual TDR, respectively. During the entire month, a CO2-C emission of less than 30 % of the C input through soybean crop residues...

Correcting field determination of elemental contents in soils via portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Dijair,Thaís Santos Branco; Silva,Fernanda Magno; Teixeira,Anita Fernanda dos Santos; Silva,Sérgio Henrique Godinho; Guilherme,Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACT Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry has been useful worldwide for determining soil elemental content under both field and laboratory conditions. However, the field results are influenced by several factors, including soil moisture (M), soil texture (T) and soil organic matter (SOM). Thus, the objective of this work was to create linear mathematical models for conversion of Al2O3, CaO, Fe, K2O, SiO2, V, Ti and Zr contents obtained by pXRF directly in field to those obtained under laboratory conditions, i.e., in air-dried fine earth (ADFE), using M, T and SOM as auxiliary variables, since they influence pXRF results. pXRF analyses in field were performed on 12 soil profiles with different parent materials. From them, 59 samples were...

Dielectric constant obtained from TDR and volumetric moisture of soils in southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Kaiser,Douglas Rodrigo; Reinert,Dalvan José; Reichert,José Miguel; Minella,Jean Paollo Gomes.
Soil moisture is the property which most greatly influences the soil dielectric constant, which is also influenced by soil mineralogy. The aim of this study was to determine mathematical models for soil moisture and the dielectric constant (Ka) for a Hapludalf, two clayey Hapludox and a very clayey Hapludox and test the reliability of universal models, such as those proposed by Topp and Ledieu and their co-workers in the 80's, and specific models to estimate soil moisture with a TDR. Soil samples were collected from the 0 to 0.30 m layer, sieved through a mesh of 0.002 m diameter and packed in PVC cylinders with a 0.1 m diameter and 0.3 m height. Seven samples of each soil class were saturated by capillarity and a probe composed of two rods was inserted in...

Evaluation of DSSAT soil-water balance module under cropped and bare soil conditions BABT
Faria,Rogério Teixeira de; Bowen,Walter Truman.
The performance of the soil water balance module (SWBM) in the models of DSSAT v3.5 was evaluated against soil moisture data measured in bare soil and dry bean plots, in Paraná, southern Brazil. Under bare soil, the SWBM showed a low performance to simulate soil moisture profiles due to inadequacies of the method used to calculate unsaturated soil water flux. Improved estimates were achieved by modifying the SWBM with the use of Darcy's equation to simulate soil water flux as a function of soil water potential gradient between consecutive soil layers. When used to simulate water balance for the bean crop, the modified SWBM improved soil moisture estimation but underpredicted crop yield. Root water uptake data indicated that assumptions on the original...

Hydro-physical processes and soil properties correlated with origin of soil hydrophobicity Ciência Rural
Vogelmann,Eduardo Saldanha; Reichert,José Miguel; Prevedello,Juliana; Awe,Gabriel Oladele.
Hydrophobicity is the phenomenon where the soil has reduced wettability, usually associated with coating of soil particles by hydrophobic organic substances. This study aimed to provide a description of the hydrophobicity occurrence, highlight recent discoveries about the origin of phenomenon and discuss the main hydro-physical properties and chemical processes linked to the development of hydrophobic behavior in soils. Hydrophobicity is associated with other factors such as soil moisture, presence of some fungi species, particle size, soil pH and occurrence of burnings. The causative substances may be provided by local vegetation, through deposition or decomposition. The dependence and combination of different factors that influence hydrophobicity in...

Inventory of water storage types in the Blue Nile and Volta River Basins AgEcon
Johnston, Robyn M.; McCartney, Matthew P..
For agriculture there is a continuum of water storage options, ranging from groundwater aquifers, soil water, natural wetlands and small ponds and tanks to large reservoirs. In any situation each of these has its own niche in terms of technical feasibility, socioeconomic sustainability and impact on public health and the environment. Planning storage requires insight into impending needs and also a good understanding of what already exists and what was, and was not, successful, in the past. This report provides an inventory of existing and prospective water storage in the Ghanaian Volta and the Ethiopian Blue Nile basins. It provides as much quantitative data as possible, but highlights both the dearth of readily available information and the lack of...

Kinetic parameters of soil β-glucosidase response to environmental temperature and moisture regimes Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Zhang,Yulan; Chen,Lijun; Wu,Zhijie; Sun,Caixia.
Soil β-glucosidase participates in the final step of cellulose biodegradation. It is significant in the soil C cycle and is used as an indicator of the biological fertility of soil. However, the response of its kinetic parameters to environmental temperature and moisture regimes is not well understood. This study tested the β-glucosidase response in the main agricultural soils (black soil, albic soil, brown soil, and cinnamon soil) of Northeast China. Incubation tests were conducted to measure the kinetic parameters Km, Vmax or Vmax/Km of soil β-glucosidase at environmental temperatures of 10, 20 and 30 ºC and at 10, 20 and 30 % soil moisture content. The insensitive response of the kinetic parameters to temperature changes indicates that soil...

Microclimate of Atlantic forest fragments: regional and local scale heterogeneity BABT
Ramos,Flavio Nunes; Santos,Flavio Antonio Maës.
The aim of this work was to investigate whether (i) the organisms within different fragments, on regional scale (separated by up to 100 km), could be submitted to similar climatic conditions (rainfall and temperature), and whether (ii) the edge formation in forest fragments could stimulate microclimatic changes (canopy cover, air temperature and soil humidity), on local scale. The organisms within different fragments, on regional scale, were submitted to different climatic conditions, and the edge formation in the forest fragment stimulated microclimatic changes, on local scale, although in a heterogenic way. Not just the distance from the edge influenced the microclimatic differences. Probably, the edge age, location, the matrix structure, as well as, gap...
