Dryland salinity emergence is an important land degradation problem in Australia. Large areas of agricultural land where conventional crops and pastures are produced are at risk. The salinisation problem can be controlled by planting trees in conjunction with crops, but a disadvantage of growing trees as a farm enterprise is the long lag between planting and harvest. When farm forestry enterprises are evaluated with conventional discounting techniques they do not generally rank as an attractive alternative to annual crops on productive land. In this paper, a dynamic model that explicitly accounts for decline or improvement in land quality over a period of 40 years is presented. The model is solved for a hypothetical farm on the Liverpool Plains of NSW. The... |

Wastewater application to soil is an alternative for fertilization and water reuse. However, particular care must be taken with this practice, since successive wastewater applications can cause soil salinization. Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) allows for the simultaneous and continuous monitoring of both soil water content and apparent electrical conductivity and thus for the indirect measurement of the electrical conductivity of the soil solution. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of TDR for the indirect determination of the electrical conductivity (ECse) of the saturated soil extract by using an empirical equation for the apparatus TDR Trase 6050X1. Disturbed soil samples saturated with swine wastewater were used, at soil proportions of 0,... |

Abstract The glycerin by-product of the production of biofuels (biodiesel) has possibility of agricultural use, but the scientific information is restricted. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of glycerin rates in the absence and presence of potassium fertilization on soil microbial activity, nutrition and production of beet (Beta vulgaris). The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at Universidade Estadual Paulista, Jaboticabal, Brazil, using beet cv. Early Wonder, grown in pots with samples of Alfisol. The experimental design was randomized block, treatments were 0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 m3 ha-1 of glycerin, in the absence and presence of potassium (150 mg dm-3), with four replicates. Electrical conductivity, respiratory activity,... |

ABSTRACT: An imaginary part model of soil dielectric constant for predicting the soil salinity status was developed based on a series of relations between dielectric imaginary part and soil bulk conductivity, soil bulk conductivity and soil solution electrical conductivity, and soil solution electrical conductivity and ion contents in soil using pot trials with different soil salinity levels in the 2008 growing season. This model was calibrated and tested with data from the 2009 growing season. The results showed that the inverted values of the total concentration of salt (Sc), Cl−, and Ca2+ at low frequencies (P-band of microwave observations) from the imaginary part model fitted well with the observed values, since root mean square errors (RMSEs) were... |
