The aim of this study was to isolate and characterize the culturable rhizobacteria associated with native cacti from Caatinga biome, testing their potential in plant growth promotion and abiotic stress tolerance. Bacterial isolates were examined for plant growth promotion traits and for in vitro abiotic stress tolerance. Promising isolates were 16S rRNA sequenced, tested under greenhouse conditions for plant growth promotion and induction of water deficit tolerance in maize plants. Analysis of variance was used to assess differences among treatments and, when significant, followed by the Scott-Knott?s test. The highest culturable population density was found in Melocactus zehntneri and the most promissing isolates belonged to the genus Bacillus. Under... |

Upland cotton crop in Brazilian semiarid zones has a favorable factor, the duration of the mean solar day. On the other hand, cotton is frequently subjected to soil water deficit. Several physiological indexes are related to the use of water by plants. Among them, photosynthesis and stomatal conductance stand out, as osmotic adjustment, such as stomatal closure, allows plants to escape dehydration and loss of turgor through the maintenance of the water content in the cells. Therefore, the efficiency of water use for irrigated production systems need to be optimized, especially in the cotton crop, as it is a species of great economic and social importance. Aiming to evaluate the gas exchange of upland cotton cultivars cultivated in the Brazilian semiarid,... |

Genes related to the response to drought stress in leaf and root tissue of drought-susceptible (DS) and tolerant (DT) genotypes were characterized by RNA-Seq. In total, 54,750 transcripts, representative of 28,590 genes, were identified; of these, 1,648 were of high-fidelity (merge of 12 libraries) and described for the first time in the Andean germplasm. From the 1,239 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 458 were identified in DT, with a predominance of genes in categories of oxidative stress, response to stimulus and kinase activity. Most genes related to oxidation-reduction terms in roots were early triggered in DT (T75) compared to DS (T150) suggestive of a mechanism of tolerance by reducing the damage from ROS. Among the KEGG enriched by DEGs... |

[[abstract]]The growth of maize during soil water deficets and after water recovery in the vegetative stage was investigated for plants grown in pots under controlled -environment conditions. Soil water deticits were imposed by withholding water from daily irrigation and released by rewatering. It was found that plant height was significantly declined when soil water potential reached down to -2.5 bars, but it can be recovered in 4 weeks when water deficits were released at soil water potential as low as -10 bars. Reduced plant height in the recovered plants measured at tasseling was therefore caused by plant height reduction during the stress period, rather than on the recovery. Leaf length, rather than leaf width was decreased by water deficiency, the... |

[[abstract]]Water is a major limiting factor on maize production in Taiwan. It is very important, therefore, to study the relations of soil moisture stress and maize (Zea mays L.) yield under local conditions. This field work was conducted on the experimental farm of Taiwan Agricultural Research Insitiute (TART) at Wufeng, Taiwan to evaluate the relative effects of water deficit timing and strength on the growth and yield of maize, cultivar Tainung No. 1. Water stress was imposed by the withholding of irrigation during reproductive growth phase (fall crop 1991) and vegtative growth phase (spring crop 1992), respectively, to cause soil water potentials to the range from − (control) to −10 bars. It was shown that leaf number per plant was not significantly... |

Background: Small RNAs (19-24 nt) are key regulators of gene expression that guide both transcriptional and posttranscriptional silencing mechanisms in eukaryotes. Current studies have demonstrated that microRNAs (miRNAs) act in several plant pathways associated with tissue proliferation, differentiation, and development and in response to abiotic and biotic stresses. In order to identify new miRNAs in soybean and to verify those that are possibly water deficit and rust-stress regulated, eight libraries of small RNAs were constructed and submitted to Solexa sequencing. Results: The libraries were developed from drought-sensitive and tolerant seedlings and rust-susceptible and resistant soybeans with or without stressors. Sequencing the library and... |

Climate, soil and management are the main drives for growth and production of tropical pastures. Thus, a better understanding of the effects of these factors and their interactions under climate conditions is required to obtain effective management options. Here, we used data from two field trials to research on climate and management interactions on the production seasonality of Panicum maximum Jacq. Treatments included four sampling times (250, 500, 750, and 1000 °C accumulated) during eight regrowth period, under irrigated and rainfed conditions and, cuts were made to simulate grazing intensity. All treatments were arranged in a completely randomized block design with four replications. At each sampling time, basal tillers were sampled to observe... |

The use of drought-tolerant cultivars is a promising strategy to minimize the effects of water deficits on upland rice productivity. Therefore, it is important to establish an adequate methodology to evaluate the performance of upland rice cultivars under water deficit. In this study, one evaluated the effects of water deficit on morphological and physiological traits of two upland rice cultivars, in a greenhouse, in soil columns, using a phenotyping platform named SITIS. The experiment occurred in a complete randomized block design, in a split plot scheme with four replications. The main plots consisted of a well-irrigated treatment with daily replacement of 100% evapotranspired water and four water restriction regimes (daily replacement of 20%, 40%, 60%... |
