The experiment was conducted under controlled conditions in the municipality of Sobral, Ceará, Brazil, to evaluate the agronomic efficiency of phosphate fertilizers with different solubilities on the cultivation of sorghum in a Luvisol. The experimental design comprised randomized blocks in a 2 × 6 factorial scheme (two genotypes and five phosphorus treatments plus the control, without phosphorus). The treatments were: monoammonium phosphate, triple superphosphate, sheep manure, organic compost based on livestock residues, and organomineral fertilizer. Three blocks were used, and each plot comprised composed of a pot containing two plants. Sixty-five days after germination, the plants were harvested for evaluation of biometric data, biomass, accumulation... |

The association between sorghum and N2-fixing bacteria has been assessed only under limited conditions. We investigated biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in situ in fifteen sorghum genotypes with dry or succulent culm types under five edaphoclimatic conditions. One randomized block experiment was established in each of five locations, from the humid to the semiarid regions of Pernambuco state, Brazil. BNF was estimated using the 15N natural abundance method by comparing the average d15N value of each sorghum genotype with those of the reference species. High levels of productivity, up to 22 Mg shoot biomass ha-1 in the 3-month cycle, were obtained where rainfall was high, and up to 5 Mg ha-1 was obtained under low rainfall. The nitrogen contents showed a... |

The objective of this study was to identify sorghum varieties that have growth and grain yield potential under saline conditions. The study was conducted in 2016 at a greenhouse of the Embrapa Semiárido, in Petrolina, state of Pernambuco, Brazil (9° 8? 8.9?? S, 40° 18? 33.6?? W, and altitude of 373 m). A randomized block experimental design, with a 6 × 5 factorial arrangement, and three replications was used. The treatments consisted of six grain sorghum varieties (1011-IPA, 2502-IPA, 2564-IPA, 2600-IPA, Ponta Negra, and Qualimax), and five salinity levels of the irrigation water (ECw = 0, 1.5, 3.0, 6.0, and 12.0 dS m-1). Plant height, stem diameter, dry matter yield, width and length of the +3 leaf, total leaf area, water use efficiency, and grain yield... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the characteristics and recovery of minerals in silages of sorghum cv. IPA 2502 irrigated with different leaching fractions of brackish water. Sorghum cultivation was carried out in the field in a randomised block design, with four replications and four irrigation leaching fractions (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%). From the harvested plant material, five silos per treatment, with five repetitions, were arranged in a completely randomised design for ensiling. Leaching fractions did not alter the levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur in sorghum. The sodium content showed a quadratic response to the leaching fractions, which was also observed for iron, manganese, and chloride. In silage,... |

The livestock systems are mostly forage-based and the off-season is the most challenging period of the year in Brazil. Mixed pastures established after cropping soybean can greatly enhance the herbage accumulation in crop-livestock systems. Besides, fertilization is not a common practice during the off-season, although, in the Amazon Biome, there is no temperature or photoperiod restrictions. Our objective was to evaluate the fertilization effect on the mixed of Sorghum bicolor (L). Moench cv. BRS 810 with Urochloa ruziziensis during the off-season in Sinop, MT, Brazil. The experiment was planted after soybean harvest, on 10 Mar. 2020, at the Embrapa Agrossilvipastoril, Sinop, MT, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three... |

The demand for sorghum cultivars of better quality and productivity stimulated the emergence of innumerable genotypes with specific characteristics of size, cycle, and aptitude, which have a marked influence on the nutritional value of the produced silage. Given this scenario, an experiment was carried out at Embrapa Agrossilvipastoril and Federal University of Mato Grosso, in Sinop/MT, to evaluate 15 different sorghum genotypes, focusing on plant characteristics that can influence the silage fermentation process. Thus, eight Embrapa experimental hybrids (foragers 15F30005 and 15F30006, saccharines CMSXS 5027, 5030, 5043 and 5045 and biomasses 2019B008 and CMSXS 7501 bmr) and seven commercial ones (BRS 658, BRS 659, Volumax, BRS 511, BRS Ponta Negra, BRS... |

Plant efficiency in developing specific mechanisms to survive under salt stress can vary significantly among genotypes, which implies different responses in growth and yield. The aim of this study was to evaluate the salt tolerance of forage sorghum genotypes by analysis of growth variables correlated with the levels of Na+ and Cl- accumulated in the leaves. The research was carried out in a greenhouse belonging to the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA) ? Semiarid, in Petrolina, Pernambuco state, Brazil. The treatments were arranged in a randomized block design with factorial arrangement 10x6 with ten genotypes (?F305?, ?BRS 655?, ?BRS 610?, ?Volumax?, ?1,015,045?, ?1,016,005?, ?1,016,009?, ?1,016,013?, ?1,016,015? and ?1,016. 031?),... |

In this work, the effect of thermoplastic extrusion on the phenolic compounds (PC)profile by UPLC-MSEand on the solubility/polymerization of kafirins by SE-HPLC was evaluated in extruded whole sorghum, with or withouttannins. Free (FPC) and bound (BPC)phenolic compoundswere extracted separately. The characteristics evaluated are antioxidant activity (by the methods DPPH and FRAP),total phenoliccontent(by the methodology involving the Reagent of Folin Ciocalteu), total proanthocyanidinscontent (TPAC) and total flavonoid content (TFC). FPC and BPC ranged from 41.1 to 434.3and 8.2to 283.7mg GAE/100g (db), respectively.DPPH and FRAP analysis showed a strong correlation with TPC (0.99and 0.95, p< 0.05, respectively). TPAC and TFC showthe degradation of... |

In order to guarantee the production of feed for ruminant animals, the dry matter (DM) content determination is very common in laboratories routine. For silage samples, part of the fermentation products can be lost by volatilization, therefore, the correction of the DM content is necessary to obtain the appropriate water content. In Europe, the formula determinated by Weissbach and Strubelt (2008) is widely used to correct this variable in corn and grass silage, since it follows a specific drying method, which is described by these authors, however, in Brazil the main methodology used to determine the content of feed DM is the described by Dettman et al. (2014). Despite this, there are few studies comparing these assessment methods to see whether in... |
