Bean grain hysteresis with induced mechanical damage 91
Campos,Renata C.; Corrêa,Paulo C.; Fernandes,Lara S.; Baptestini,Fernanda M.; Costa,Cristian F.; Bustos-Vanegas,Jaime D..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of mechanical damage on the hysteresis of beans with induced mechanical damage under different conditions of temperature and relative humidity. Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) harvested manually with 35% water content (w.b.) were used. Part of this product was subjected to induced mechanical damage by Stein Breakage Tester and controlled drying (damaged and control sample), for sorption processes. The sorption isotherms of water were analyzed for different temperature conditions: 20, 30, 40 and 50 oC; and relative humidity: 0.3; 0.4; 0.5; 0.7 and 0.9 (decimal). Equilibrium moisture content data were correlated with six mathematical models, and the Modified Oswin model was the one that best fitted to the...

Diuron Sorption, Desorption and Degradation in Anthropogenic Soils Compared to Sandy Soil 87
ALMEIDA,C.S.; MENDES,K.F.; JUNQUEIRA,L.V.; ALONSO,F.G.; CHITOLINA,G.M.; TORNISIELO,V.L..
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate diuron sorption, desorption and degradation in two anthropogenic soils (Terra Preta de Índio - TPI) in contrast to a sandy soil (Quartzarenic Neosol - NQo). Sorption-desorption studies were performed by the batch equilibrium method and biodegradation in biometric bottles using radiolabeled diuron in 14C. Freundlich coefficient (Kf) values ranged from 13.50 to 50.41 µmol(1-1/n) L1/n kg-1 in TPI-2 and TPI-1, respectively, indicating very high diuron sorption in anthropogenic soils, following the order: TPI-1 ≥ TPI-2 > NQo (99.10, 98.95 and 60.8%, respectively). Diuron desorption was very low in anthropogenic soils, ranging from 1.36 (TPI-1) to 1.70% (TPI-2), and 24% to NQo. Accumulated diuron mineralization...

FITTINGS OF ADSORPTION ISOTHERM MODELS AND THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF URUNDAY SEEDS 70
Isquierdo,Eder P.; Caldeira,Daniela S. A.; Siqueira,Valdiney C.; Martins,Elton A. S.; Quequeto,Wellytton D..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to obtain and evaluate thermodynamic properties and hygroscopic equilibrium isotherms of urunday seeds as a function of air relative humidity and temperature, as well as identify the best-fitted mathematical models for adsorption phenomenon. A static-gravimetric method was used to obtain hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content. Seeds were placed in airtight containers with different saturated saline solutions for relative humidity control. These were then kept in BOD incubator chambers at 10, 20, 30, and 40 °C. Hygroscopic equilibrium moisture content decreased as temperature increased, for the same water activity. The Sigma-Copace model best-fitted seed adsorption data for equilibrium water activity intervals between 0.1129 and...

Hygroscopic behaviour of cassava flour from dry and water groups 65
Chisté,Renan Campos; Cardoso,Jonnahta Monteiro; Silva,Diego Aires da; Pena,Rosinelson da Silva.
Cassava flour from dry and water groups are important starch products widely consumed in the Amazonian region of Brazil. In this study, the moisture sorption isotherms of cassava flour from dry and water groups were obtained in the water activity (aw) range from 0.09 to 0.94 (dry group) and 0.07 to 0.93 (water group) at 25°C and the applicability of eight mathematical models in data prediction was evaluated. Both cassava flour from dry and water groups exhibited type II isotherms (sigmoid) and the hysteresis effect between adsorption and desorption isotherms was shown almost over the entire range of aw. The moisture of cassava flour from dry and water groups should not exceed 11.3g H2O 100g-1(aw=0.6) to ensure the theoretical microbiological stability and...

Moisture sorption isotherms of dehydrated (African oil bean) Pentaclethra macrophylla benth. cotyledons 111
Olurin, Taiwo Olufemi.
Sorption isotherms of (African oil bean) Pentaclethra macrophylla benth. cotyledons were determined by static gravimetric method at different temperatures, in the range from 28 and 48 oC. Equilibrium moisture content (EMC) data were analysed using various sorption models usually applied to dried food materials. Experimental data were analysed by a thermodynamic approach to obtain such properties as net isosteric heat, net equilibrium heat, differential and  integral entropy that provide a deeper understanding of the properties of water and energy requirements associated with sorption process. Sorption isotherms of dried African oil bean cotyledons showed type II isotherm. Adsorption and desorption isotherms were best described by Guggenheim–Anderson-DeBoer...

Study of adsorption isotherms of green coconut pulp 116
Lavoyer,Fábia Carolina Gonçalves; Gabas,Ana Lúcia; Oliveira,Wanderley Pereira; Telis-Romero,Javier.
Brazil is considered one of the largest producers and consumers of tropical fruits. Green coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) stands out not only for its production and consumption, but also for the high amount of waste produced by coconut water industry and in natura consumption. Therefore, there is a need for utilization of this by-product. This study aims to study the adsorption isotherms of green coconut pulp and determine its isosteric heat of sorption. The adsorption isotherms at temperatures of 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 °C were analyzed, and they exhibit type III behavior, typical of sugar rich foods. The experimental results of equilibrium moisture content were correlated by models present in the literature. The Guggenheim, Anderson and De Boer (GAB) model...

Study of the enthalpy-entropy mechanism from water sorption of orange seeds (C. sinensis cv. Brazilian) for the use of agro-industrial residues as a possible source of vegetable oil production 116
Rosa,Daniele Penteado; Villa-Vélez,Harvey Alexander; Telis-Romero,Javier.
Orange seeds are a promising agroindustry-waste which can be implemented in the extraction and production of vegetable oil. The relationship between moisture content and water activity provides useful information for the processing and storage of this waste item. The aim of this study was to determine the mechanism of water sorption enthalpy-entropy of orange seeds (C. sinensis cv. Brazilians) according to the moisture content. Therefore, desorption isotherms were determined at five different temperature (30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 ºC) under a wide range of moisture content (0.005-0.057 kg kg-1 d.b.) and water activity (0.02-0.756). Theoretical and empirical models were used for modeling the desorption isotherms. An analytical solution of the...
