A carbohydrate-based mechanism of species recognition in sea urchin fertilization BJMBR
Mourão,P.A.S..
In the present review, we describe a systematic study of the sulfated polysaccharides from marine invertebrates, which led to the discovery of a carbohydrate-based mechanism of sperm-egg recognition during sea urchin fertilization. We have described unique polymers present in these organisms, especially sulfated fucose-rich compounds found in the egg jelly coat of sea urchins. The polysaccharides have simple, linear structures consisting of repeating units of oligosaccharides. They differ among the various species of sea urchins in specific patterns of sulfation and/or position of the glycosidic linkage within their repeating units. These polysaccharides show species specificity in inducing the acrosome reaction in sea urchin sperm, providing a clear-cut...

An attribute-diversity approach to functional diversity, functional beta diversity, and related (dis)similarity measures ArchiMer
Chao, Anne; Chiu, Chun-huo; Villéger, Sébastien; Sun, I-fang; Thorn, Simon; Lin, Yi-ching; Chiang, Jyh-min; Sherwin, William B..
Based on the framework of attribute diversity (a generalization of Hill numbers of order q), we develop a class of functional diversity measures sensitive not only to species abundances but also to trait‐based species‐pairwise functional distances. The new method refines and improves on the conventional species‐equivalent approach in three areas: (1) the conventional method often gives similar values (close to unity) to assemblages with contrasting levels of functional diversity; (2) when a distance metric is unbounded, the conventional functional diversity depends on the presence/absence of other assemblages in the study; (3) in partitioning functional gamma diversity into alpha and beta components, the conventional gamma is sometimes less than alpha. To...

Aquatic vascular plants of South Brazil: checklist and a comparative floristic approach Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Lukiel dos Santos; Andrade,Bianca Ott; Boldrini,Ilsi Iob; Moço,Maria Cecilia de Chiara.
ABSTRACT Aquatic ecosystems support species diversity, and knowledge of plant communities is essential for wetland conservation programs. This study provides a checklist of aquatic vascular plants of South Brazil and establishes their floristic affinities with bordering South America phytogeographical domains. The checklist was based on 52 sources, including 35 floristic lists, 17 regional taxonomic studies, and information from an electronic database on wetlands of South Brazil. Floristic similarities with published checklists for neighbouring regions were assessed. A total of 780 species distributed in 277 genera and 85 families of vascular plants were reported for South Brazil. Families with higher species richness were Cyperaceae (128), Poaceae (102),...

Asociación bentónicas en bancos de vieira patagónica (Zygochlamys patagonica) en el Mar Argentino OceanDocs
Schejter, L..
The different aspects of the benthic assemblages at the Patagonian scallop beds in the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) were studied. The Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) is a commercial species distributed in the Magellanic Biogeographic Province, and has been commercially exploited since 1996. Temporal and spatial studies were performed in the community composition between 39°50'S and 36°15'S, and between 1998 and 2003, concluding that the species association was persistent after more than 7 years of trawling activities. Species composition in an exclusion area (closed to scallop fishing) did not differ from surrounding fished areas during the studied period, showing only a higher scallop biomass. ABC curves showed a pattern coincident with a non...

We demonstrate for the first time the potential use of satellite imagery to characterize areas of high and low species richness of trees in tropical forests. Our studies, conducted in the Biligiri Rangaswamy hills in the Western Ghats, India, show a high positive correlation between species richness and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which is an index of green biomass. We discuss the application of NDVI values for biodiversity assessment and monitoring, as well as for conservation planning. The NDVI is a rough measure of green biomass.

Biogeography and Potential Exchanges Among the Atlantic Equatorial Belt Cold-Seep Faunas ArchiMer
Olu, Karine; Cordes, Erik E.; Fisher, Charles R.; Brooks, James M.; Sibuet, Myriam; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
Like hydrothermal vents along oceanic ridges, cold seeps are patchy and isolated ecosystems along continental margins, extending from bathyal to abyssal depths. The Atlantic Equatorial Belt (AEB), from the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Guinea, was one focus of the Census of Marine Life ChEss (Chemosynthetic Ecosystems) program to study biogeography of seep and vent fauna. We present a review and analysis of collections from five seep regions along the AEB: the Gulf of Mexico where extensive faunal sampling has been conducted from 400 to 3300m, the Barbados accretionary prism, the Blake ridge diapir, and in the Eastern Atlantic from the Congo and Gabon margins and the recently explored Nigeria margin. Of the 72 taxa identified at the species level, a total...

Community structure of metazoan parasites in Hemibrycon surinamensis (Characidae) from the Matapi River in the State of Amapá, Brazil. Repositório Alice
SOUSA, B. O.; OLIVEIRA, M. S. B.; TAVARES-DIAS, M..
The aim of this study was to investigate the community of metazoan parasites in Hemibrycon surinamensis from the Matapi River, State of Amapá, Brazil. Among the 31 examined fish, 77.4 % were parasitized by Jainus hexops, Tereancistrum ornatus (Monogenea), Contracaecum sp. (Nematoda), Clinostomus marginatum and Posthodiplostomum sp. (Digenea). However, the dominance was of monogeneans J. hexops and T. ornatus, and among the endoparasites, the predominance was of species at the larval stage. The parasites showed random dispersion. Brillouin diversity index varied from 0 to 0.9, evenness from 0 to 0.7 and species richness from 0 to 3 parasites per host. Low levels of parasitic infection were observed and discussed. The results indicate that this intermediate...
