The use of mouthwashes in critical patients has been a source of concern for health professionals due to the diverse range of products, causing uncertainty about which is the most indicated. This study aimed to assess the susceptibility of Staphylococcus spp. isolated in the saliva of individuals from the community and patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) as to antiseptic mouthwashes. The following oral antiseptics were assessed: cetylpyridinium chloride solution, Listerine® and Neen®. Calcium alginate swab was used for saliva collection to isolate Staphylococcus spp. Microbiological processing involved growth, isolation, strain identification and determination of MID (maximum inhibitory dilution). MID was considered the greatest dilution that completely... |

ABSTRACT: This study focused on counting Staphylococcus spp. in curd cheeses “requeijão” and “especialidade láctea type requeijão” sold in Brazil, assessing the presence of mecA gene in obtained isolates and establishing antimicrobial resistance profile of the mecA gene positive isolates. To this, a set of 200 samples of these dairy products were evaluated. Low counts of Staphylococcus spp. were observed in these dairy products. All the isolates were determined as coagulase-negative strains using coagulase test and PCR. However, two isolates (3.70%) were carriers of mecA gene and they can be considered as risk for public health. These isolates presented resistance to penicillin, oxacillin and erythromycin. In conclusion, low counts of Staphylococcus were... |

Antibiotic susceptibility of the Staphylococcus spp. isolated from chicken carcass from the city of Recife, Pernambuco, was determined. Out of 90 strains of Staphylococcus spp., 51 were classified as Staphylococcus aureus and 39 as Staphylococcus negative coagulase. Samples were submitted to the disc diffusion technique for the antibiotic susceptibility test. Among the 17 antibiotics tested, the most efficient was vancomycin. Twenty (22.2%), 11 (12.2%) and 10 (11.1%) of the Staphylococcus spp. samples were resistant to five, six and 14 antibiotics, respectively. |
