Application of microbial α-amylase in industry - A review BJM
Souza,Paula Monteiro de; Magalhães,Pérola de Oliveira e.
Amylases are one of the main enzymes used in industry. Such enzymes hydrolyze the starch molecules into polymers composed of glucose units. Amylases have potential application in a wide number of industrial processes such as food, fermentation and pharmaceutical industries. α-Amylases can be obtained from plants, animals and microorganisms. However, enzymes from fungal and bacterial sources have dominated applications in industrial sectors. The production of α-amylase is essential for conversion of starches into oligosaccharides. Starch is an important constituent of the human diet and is a major storage product of many economically important crops such as wheat, rice, maize, tapioca, and potato. Starch-converting enzymes are used in the production of...

Archaeological material for the study of crop evolution Scientia Agricola
Freitas,Fábio de Oliveira; Martins,Paulo Sodero.
This research studies archaeological samples of maize (Zea mays mays) and cassava (Manihot esculenta), from Januaria, MG, Brazil, for samples between 1010 (for the oldest sample) and 570 years (for the most recent) as estimated through radiocarbon dating. Maize cobs were morphologically analysed by using length, basal and apical diameters, largest diameter, number of rows, number of grains per row, and number of grains per row per length parameters. The maize cob length presented increases through time, allowing an increase on the number of seed per cob, but the size of seeds did not vary significantly. Starch present in the reserve organs of the maize and cassava were analysed morphologically through Scanning Electron Microscopy, and compared to...

Assimilate partitioning in leaves of the raffinose-storing herb Lamium album L.: photosynthesis and carbon partitioning throughout the photoperiod Rev. Bras. Bot.
Kochhar,A.; Rees,T. Ap; Pollock,C.J..
Lamium album accumulates starch, sucrose and raffinose-family oligosaccharides (RFO) as the major products of photosynthesis. These products were measured in leaves throughout a sixteen-hour photoperiod and under various irradiance conditions. There was continuous accumulation of sucrose and starch. The rate of gas exchange was higher at 500 µEm² s-1 and 900 µEm²s-1 than at 300 µEm² s-1. The rate of photosynthesis did not decline over the sixteen-hour photoperiod, which suggested that there was no short-term feed back inhibition due to sucrose accumulation in this plant. When the products of photosynthesis were compared at the end of the photoperiod, only sucrose increased in abundance at high irradiance. The RFO pool in leaves was shown to contain...

Assimilate partitioning in leaves of the raffinose-storing herb Lamium album L.: the effects of altering source-sink balance Rev. Bras. Bot.
Kochhar,A.; Rees,T. Ap; Pollock,C.J..
In Lamium album, sucrose and raffinose-family oligosaccharides are the major products of photosynthesis that are stored in leaves. Using gas analysis and 14CO2 feeding, we compared photosynthesis and the partitioning of recently-fixed carbon in plants where sink activity was lowered by excision of flowers and chilling of roots with those where sink activity was not modified. Reduction in sink activity led to a reduction in the maximum rate of photosynthesis, to retention of fixed carbon in source leaves and to the progressive accumulation of raffinose-family oligosaccharides. This ultimately affected the extractable activities of invertase and sucrose phosphate synthase. At the end of the light period, invertase activity was significantly higher in treated...

Biodegradation of a blended starch/natural rubber foam biopolymer and rubber gloves by Streptomyces coelicolor CH13 Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Watcharakul,Sirimaporn; Umsakul,Kamontam; Hodgson,Brian; Chumeka,Wannapa; Tanrattanakul,Varaporn.
Background: The growing problem of environmental pollution caused by synthetic plastics has led to the search for alternative materials such as biodegradable plastics. Of the biopolymers presently under development, starch/natural rubber is one promising alternative. Several species of bacteria and fungi are capable of degrading natural rubber and many can degrade starch. Results: Streptomyces coelicolor CH13 was isolated from soil according to its ability to produce translucent halos on a mineral salts medium, MSM, supplemented with natural rubber and to degrade starch. Scanning electron microscope studies showed that it colonized the surfaces of strips of a new starch/natural rubber biopolymer and rubber gloves and caused degradation by forming holes,...

Boron affects the growth and ultrastructure of castor bean plants Scientia Agricola
Silva,Denis Herisson da; Rossi,Monica Lanzoni; Boaretto,Antonio Enedi; Nogueira,Neusa de Lima; Muraoka,Takashi.
The cultivation of oleaginous plants like the castor bean guarantees employment for agricultural families and can contribute in energy and chemical sectors, especially in the northeastern semi-arid regions of Brazil. Boron (B) deficiency is a widespread nutritional disorder despite the fact that various anthropogenic sources with high B content may increase soil B to toxic levels for plants. The present study was designed to investigate the ultrastructural effects of boron deficiency and toxicity on castor bean plants which were grown under greenhouse condition using plastic containers with 10 L of nutrient solution. Boron treatments comprised: control (no B); 0.27 mg L-1, 5.40 mg L-1 B pots (one plant per pot), tested in a completely randomized design...

Calcium oxalate content from two Amazonian amilaceous roots and the functional properties of their isolated starches Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
RAMOS,Amanda da Silva; VERÇOSA,Rachel de Melo; TEIXEIRA,Sheylla Maria Luz; TEIXEIRA-COSTA,Bárbara Elisabeth.
Abstract The calcium oxalate content from two Amazonian amilaceous roots, Xanthosoma sagittifolium and Pachyrhizus tuberosus, before and after cooking were studied in the present work. Calcium oxalate raphides were observed by light microscopy in longitudinal sections from fresh tubers. The functional properties and physicochemical characteristics of isolated starches from both species were also investigated. Starches granules were observed with scanning electronic microscopy and presented a typical oval-circular shape, smooth surfaces and size ranging from 3.6 μm to 14 μm. Lower gel clarity, slightly high water-binding capacity, A-type starch structure and low values of crystallinity degree were determined in the isolated starches. High intensity bands...
