This experiment investigated the benefits of feeding steers bred from parents known to be of high genetic merit for feed efficiency (HE; midparent net feed intake-estimated breeding value (NFI-EBV) ≤-0.3kg/day), medium efficiency (ME: midparent NFI-EBV >-0.3 to 0.14 kg/day), or low efficiency (LE; midparent NFI-EBV ≥0.16kg/day). The steers were evaluated over a 251-day feeding period in a large commercial feedlot. Genetic superiority in NFI had a favourable impact on the commercial performance of Angus steers by reducing feed consumed with no adverse effect on final turnoff weight. Each HE steer consumed on average 2.60t of feed compared to 2.87t by the ME and LE steers, with no compromise in weight gain. The HE steers gained less subcutaneous ribfat... |

Mechanical maceration enhances site and extent of digestion of low-moisture, low-quality forages. Four Holstein steers (172 ± 8 kg) with cannulas in rumen and proximal duodenum were used in 4x4 Latin square design to evaluate the process of mechanical maceration of sudangrass hay on the characteristics of ruminal and total tract digestion. Treatments consisted of a steam-flaked corn-based growing diet supplemented with 21 % forage (DM basis) as: i) wheat straw (Triticum aestivum, STRW), ii) sudangrass hay (Sorghum sudanense, SG), iii) macerated SG at intensity of 4,134 kPa (MAC600) and 4) macerated SG at intensity of 6,200 kPa (MAC900). All forages were ground to pass through a 3.8 cm screen before incorporation into complete mixed diets (21:79 forage to... |

Live weight gain (LWG) and meat fatty acid composition (FA) were evaluated in Hereford steers fed on pasture with or without oat grain. The study site was non-traditional pastures were used in the dryland Andes foothills, VIII Region, Chile (36° 49' S, 71° 55' W), including forages such as alfalfa (Medicago sativa), orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) and roadside brome (Bromus stamineus). Ten calves with an average LW of 173 kg were fed with red clover (Trifolium pretense L. var. Quiñequeli) during winter. In spring, 50% of steers were fed only pasture (P), and the other half were fed the same pasture in rotational grazing supplemented with oat grain (PO), 2.5 kg steer-1 day-1. The LWG was 0.78 and 0.91 kg day-¹ for the P and PO treatments, respectively.... |
