AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTIVITY ANALYSIS OF EUROPEAN UNION AND EASTERN REGIONS AgEcon
Serrao, Amilcar.
This research work uses stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and data envelopment analysis (DEA) to examine the sources of agricultural productivity growth over time and of productivity differences among countries and regions in European Union over the period 1980-1998. A comparison of the mean productivity scores obtained by the two approaches show that DEA results are higher than in SFA results, because DEA fits a tighter (more flexible) frontier than the translog frontier. This study is a valuable warning for people to be carefully about the effects of the methodology choice upon their results and to use more than one approach if they suspect that it may have some influence.

DOES GROUP AFFILIATION INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFICIENCY IN RUSSIA’S AGRICULTURE? EVIDENCE FROM AGROHOLDINGS IN THE BELGOROD OBLAST AgEcon
Hahlbrock, Konstantin; Hockmann, Heinrich.
The impact of group affiliation to agroholdings on enterprise performance in terms of productivity and efficiency is controversially discussed in the literature. However, only few papers evaluate the effects of group membership on the productivity and the efficiency of agricultural enterprises in Russia. The underlying research question of this paper is therefore whether farms that belong to agroholdings perform better than independent farms. We calculate partial land and labor productivity, total factor productivity and technical efficiency scores for the two categories of independent farms and members of agroholdings. In this paper a production function approach is estimated in the framework of stochastic frontier analysis. The results are used to...

Exploring the Role of Managerial Ability in Determining Firm Efficiency AgEcon
Byma, Justin P.; Tauer, Loren W..
This paper explores the role of management ability in explaining efficiency on New York dairy farms. Using an unbalanced panel of farm data from 1993 through 2004, we estimate input and output-oriented technical efficiencies, cost efficiencies and revenue efficiencies using stochastic frontier functions. We include various input variables as efficiency effects and find lagged net farm income is a preferred measure of management ability over farmers' own estimates of the value of their labor and management. We also find increasing efficiency with operator education, farm size, and extended participation in a farm management program and decreasing efficiency with operator age.

Genetically Modified Crops, an Input Distance Function Approach AgEcon
Gardner, Justin G.; Nehring, Richard F.; Nelson, Carl H..
Our initial findings indicate that GM crops do not contribute to the decline of traditional family farms. We make a significant methodological impact by using the within transformation to remove unobserved individual effects and demonstrate that the within transformation results in ML estimates that are identical to OLS estimates.

INFLUENCE OF THE INTEGRATION OF AGROHOLDINGS WITH RUSSIAN FARMS ON TOTAL FACTOR PRODUCTIVITY AND ITS SUBCOMPONENTS AgEcon

Parametric farm performance and efficiency methodology: Stochastic Frontier Analysis AgEcon
Bakucs, Lajos Zoltan.
There is a continuously growing literature on the agricultural transformation in Central and Eastern European countries (see some surveys in Brooks and Nash 2002; Rozelle and Swinnen 2004). The research has focused on various aspects of transition, including land reform, farm restructuring, price and trade liberalisation, but even though Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data are now available for some years, there are only a few studies (e.g. Bakucs et al. 2010, Fogarasi and Latruffe, 2007, Baráth et al., 2009) focusing on Hungarian farm performance. The objective of this paper is to shed light on some methodological issues that are needed to study Hungarian farm performance. Here we consider one aspect of farm performance, namely technical efficiency....
