Ninety-seven sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) germplasm lines from the USDA-ARS Ft. Collins sugar beet program, a resistant control germplasm (1996A008), and three commercial control cultivars [SV2012RR (susceptible), Monohikari (susceptible) and HM PM90 (resistant)] were screened for response to Beet curly top virus (BCTV). Twenty-two sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) lines from the USDA-ARS Ft. Curly top caused by Beet curly top virus is a widespread disease problem vectored by the beet leafhopper in semiarid sugar beet production areas. Host resistance is the primary defense against this problem, but resistance in commercial cultivars is only low to intermediate. In order to identify novel sources of curly top resistance, 14 sugar beet lines were screened in a disease nursery in 2015. The lines were arranged in a randomized complete block design with six replications. Eighteen isolates sampled from sugar beet roots associated with an unknown etiology were characterized based on observations of morphological characters, hyphal growth at temperatures ranging from 4 to 28 C, production of phenol oxidases, and sequence analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) regions of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA). Eighteen commercial sugar beet cultivars were grown in a commercial sprinkler-irrigated sugar beet field near American Falls, ID where potatoes were grown in 2007.
