Soil aggregation and carbon stabilization in burn and no-burn sugarcane management systems Anais da ABC (AABC)
GUIMARÃES,MARIA DE FÁTIMA; OLIVEIRA,JOSÉ F. DE; TELLES,TIAGO S.; MACHADO,WALQUÍRIA; BARBOSA,GRAZIELA M.C.; TAVARES FILHO,JOÃO.
ABSTRACT Retaining sugarcane straw over the soil after harvesting can improve soil structure and increase soil carbon stabilization, mainly in macroaggregates. We evaluated the carbon content in the aggregate classes in areas under burn and no-burn (adopted for five years) sugarcane management systems, focusing on the superficial layer (0.00-0.20 m). The experiment was carried in an Oxisol and the treatments consisted in burnt sugarcane, manual harvest; burnt sugarcane, mechanized harvest; and no-burn, mechanized harvest. The retention of sugarcane straw on the soil surface is justified by the increase in carbon content and carbon stock in the surface layer (0.00-0.20 m) by restructuring of the soil, even though it cannot match the structure of the soil...

Sugarcane straw as a feedstock for xylitol production by Candida guilliermondii FTI 20037 BJM
Hernández-Pérez,Andrés Felipe; Arruda,Priscila Vaz de; Felipe,Maria das Graças de Almeida.
Abstract Sugarcane straw has become an available lignocellulosic biomass since the progressive introduction of the non-burning harvest in Brazil. Besides keeping this biomass in the field, it can be used as a feedstock in thermochemical or biochemical conversion processes. This makes feasible its incorporation in a biorefinery, whose economic profitability could be supported by integrated production of low-value biofuels and high-value chemicals, e.g., xylitol, which has important industrial and clinical applications. Herein, biotechnological production of xylitol is presented as a possible route for the valorization of sugarcane straw and its incorporation in a biorefinery. Nutritional supplementation of the sugarcane straw hemicellulosic hydrolyzate as a...

Weed population under different amounts of sugarcane straw in São Paulo State, Brazil. Repositório Alice
RAMOS, N. P.; PACKER, A. P.; VIEIRA, H. B.; MORICONI, W.; ASSIS, M. C. de; ROSSETTO, R..
Abstract: Maintenance of the straws on the soil surface has been proved essential for environrnental quality of the sugarcane productive system in Brazil. However, this practice requires changes in the current management systems used around the country. This requires the use of tolerant varieties to the presence of straw residue on the soil surface, improvement in fertilization process, and also pest, disease and weeds control. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the incidence of weed populations in the sugarcane cultivation under different levels of straw, in order to support possible changes in the management of these plants. Treatments were based on five levels of straw left on the soil surface at harvest, as follows: 0% - 25% - 50% - 75% -...
