Owing to creation of Thai rice snack with health benefits for higher potential in commercial scale, mulberry leaf was applied in the production of extruded snack product. Mulberry leaf in dried powder was mixed with rice, corn, soy, sugar, oil, vitamins and minerals to investigate the operating conditions with twin-screw extruder at varying mulberry content (5, 7.5 and 10%), screw speed (300 and 350 rpm) and feed moisture (13, 15 and 17%) in the 3 × 2 × 3 factorial experiment. The extrudates were examined of functional properties (antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds) and some physical characteristics (expansion ratio, bulk density, texture measurement and organoleptic test). The results had shown that at higher mulberry content (10%), the product... |

The color is an important factor to distinguish the commercialized Amazon river prawns. The accumulation of pigments in the body can vary according to the prawn?s diet. In this work, ethanolic extracts of ?buriti? and annatto rich in pigments were obtained and tested comparatively with synthetic astaxanthin in the feeding of adults of Macrobrachium amazonicum, together with a control group without pigments and a newly captured wild group. Levels of body pigments were measured using UV reflective spectroscopy and external staining by colorimetry. Differences were observed in the accumulation of astaxan thin in body tissues, differences in saturation between genders and that annatto extract has greater stability in the feed after water immersion... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of concentrate supplementation on the performance of goat kids grazing in the native vegetation of semiarid region of Brazil(Caatinga). The variables evaluated were digestibility of extrusa (food collected by thefistulated animals), weight gain, feed intake, digestibility and N balance. Four castratedindigenous male goats (2.5 years old and 22.5 ± 4 kg of body weight (BW)) and fistulatedwere randomly assigned in Latin square design for evaluation of the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of the extrusa. For determination of weight gain, feed intake and digestibility, thirty-six castrated male goats (five months old, 15.7 ± 0.78 kg of BW) were arranged randomly in four supplementation... |

The objective of this study was to assess the growth performance and the histomorphometric characterization of the middle intestine of GIFT strain Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus juveniles fed probiotics, added either before or after the feed processing. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five treatments and five replications: pelleted feed without any probiotic; pelleted feed with inclusion of probiotic before the processing; pelleted feed with inclusion of probiotic after the processing; extruded feed without any probiotic and extruded feed with inclusion of probiotic after the processing. Two hundred and fifty juveniles were distributed in 25 aquaria (20L) and fed for 63 days. Differences in the mean values of total weight were... |

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of homeopathic additives and the non-ionophore antibiotic virginiamicin® on intake, digestibility, metabolic characteristics and carcase characteristics in Nellore bulls under supplemented grazing. Twelve uncastrated Nellore bulls were used, with an initial mean weight of 346.04 ± 13.33 kg and initial age of 20.00 ± 2.00 months. The animals were kept in individual paddocks of Urochloa decumbens Stapf. (syn. Brachiaria) and divided into two treatments: Lipomax® - supplement concentrate with homeopathic additives (Convert H®, Sodo 100®, Figotonus®) and a non-ionophore antibiotic (Virginiamycin®); Control - supplement concentrate containing the same protein content, but with no additives. The... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the in vitro degradation dynamics of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) of high-quality tropical forage according to supplementation with different nitrogenous compounds sources. A signal grass sample harvested during rainy season was used as basal forage. Casein was used as true protein source and urea:ammonium sulfate (U:AS, 9:1) mixture (urea) as non-protein nitrogen source. The first three supplements were the addition of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg of casein per mL of final incubation solution. The urea was added to the same amount of protein supplied by equivalent levels 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/mL of casein. In total, seven treatments were evaluated, including a control (only grass). The supplements were evaluated in a... |

ABSTRACT The food, training, and health are crucial for a good performance in sports. Intense physical activity takes the athlete to maintain a very unstable balance between energy demand and consumption of nutrients. Spirulina microalga has a nutritional profile that renders it an ideal food supplement, because has high protein content, also contains vitamins, minerals, and pigments. In this context, the study aimed to develop, characterize and evaluate the stability of foods enhanced with Spirulina, which are intended for athletes. In this study, six different supplements were developed (electrolyte replenisher, muscle enhancer, and recovery supplement), without and with Spirulina. The electrolyte replenisher with Spirulina compared to the product... |

The objective of this study was to verify the effect of low-intake supplementation on performance of Nellore young bulls kept on Marandu grass pasture. The experiment was divided in two periods: the dry and rainy seasons. Treatments during the dry period were composed of mineral salt with urea and mineral supplement enriched with true protein and additive. In the rainy period treatments were mineral salt and enriched mineral supplement only. Pastures were evaluated and animals were weighed in both evaluation phases. The variables studied were evaluated in a completely randomized design in a split-plot arrangement, where plots were treatments and subplots were the periods within each phase, considering the types of supplementation as treatments. During the... |

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the characteristics of the sward canopy of Marandu grass during the rainy season, the wet-to-dry transition and the dry seasons, between March and September 2004, under intermittent grazing, and to correlate those characteristics with the performance of crossbred heifers receiving mineral supplements ad libitum or protein supplements. The experiment consisted of a randomized block design with three blocks (set of 13 paddocks), each containing five crossbred heifers per experimental unit, totaling 15 replicates. The heifers were given protein supplements daily in individual stalls and received an average 4 g/kg/day of the supplement during the rainy season and 5 g/kg/day during the dry season. Their weight... |
