A decision-tree-based model for evaluating the thermal comfort of horses Scientia Agricola
Maia,Ana Paula de Assis; Oliveira,Stanley Robson de Medeiros; Moura,Daniella Jorge de; Sarubbi,Juliana; Vercellino,Rimena do Amaral; Medeiros,Brenda Batista Lemos; Griska,Paulo Roberto.
Thermal comfort is of great importance in preserving body temperature homeostasis during thermal stress conditions. Although the thermal comfort of horses has been widely studied, there is no report of its relationship with surface temperature (T S). This study aimed to assess the potential of data mining techniques as a tool to associate surface temperature with thermal comfort of horses. T S was obtained using infrared thermography image processing. Physiological and environmental variables were used to define the predicted class, which classified thermal comfort as "comfort" and "discomfort". The variables of armpit, croup, breast and groin T S of horses and the predicted classes were then subjected to a machine learning process. All variables in the...

A mid-Holocene transition in the nitrogen dynamics of the western equatorial Pacific: Evidence of a deepening thermocline? ArchiMer
Kienast, M.; Lehmann, M. F.; Timmermann, A.; Galbraith, E.; Bolliet, T.; Holboum, A.; Normandeau, C.; Laj, C..
Sedimentary delta(15)N records from the oligotrophic western equatorial Pacific (WEP) off Mindanao show that late Holocene sedimentary delta(15)N is substantially lower than that of the early Holocene, following a gradual >3 parts per thousand decrease that occurred between 7 and 3 kyrs ago. Analyses of modem day nitrate isotope profiles from the same region indicate the sensitivity of the WEP N pools towards (1) the advection of (15)N-enriched nitrate from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) by the North Equatorial Current (NEC) and the Mindanao Current in subsurface waters and, (2) at shallow depths, the input of new and (15)N-depleted nitrate through N, fixation. We suggest that the Holocene decrease in sedimentary delta(15)N reflects a diminished...

An Assessment of Urban Heat Island Effect using Remote Sensing Data. OceanDocs
Wang, Guiling; Jiang, Weimei; Wei, Ming.
Characteristics of urban heat island (UHI) effect and its cause are investigated by using MODIS data in April 2004. Surface parameters from the MODIS data have surface temperature (ts), albedo(a), and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Their heterogeneities over urban and rural area are analyzed based on land cover classification, and their relations are also presented in order to explain the UHI effect. The results show that there exists obvious the UHI effect. Ts over urban areas are by 10.83 % higher than those over rural area, and NDVI and a over urban area are by 62 % and 18.75 % less than those over rural area, respectively. Surface temperature has significantly negative correlation with NDVI and their correlation coefficient is -0.73....

An Ocean Theme for the IGOS Partnership OceanDocs
The Integrated Global Observing Strategy Partnership (IGOS-P) established, in 1999, a thematic approach to the implementation of the IGOS. Recognising that other themes will emerge, the “Ocean Theme” was chosen to be the “pathfinder” in this approach and an Ocean Theme Team was assembled to formulate guidance. One goal of the Ocean Theme Team is to consider and study the full range of current and planned observations, while identifying potential gaps in future observations that might compromise ocean observational records. This document presents a proposed set of long-term ocean observations and identifies a number of challenges for the improvement of knowledge about both the oceans and observing techniques. The overall strategy is to create an observing...

Análisis de cambios en los afloramientos en el Pacífico ecuatorial este, durante eventos El Niño Oscilación del Sur OceanDocs
Perugachi Salamea, C..
The ocean reanalysis Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) 2.2.4 is used to explore the changes in upwelling from normal conditions to either El Niño or La Niña conditions. Physical and termodynamics variables from the reanalysis are used to explore the structure and behaviour of El Niño Southern Oscillaion (ENSO) events. The results of this analysis show that sea surface temperature (SST), entrainment velocity, wind stress, mixed layer depth, wind stress curl, and heat content anomalies are in general agreement with ENSO theory. Interestingly, the distribution of upwelling based on the entrainment velocity is very patchy, which led us to explore zonal and meridional sections of vertical velocity. We used three methods to compute changes in upwelling...

Beneficio económico de la caballa (Scomber japonicus) con relación a la temperatura superficial del mar en el área de Mar del Plata. OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Hernandez, D.R..
The temperature that limits the presence of schools of Argentine chub mackerel Scomber japonicus was found to be around 19°C in the Mar del Plata area Buenos Aires prov., Argentina. At higher values, most shoals leave coastal waters in direction to the mid-shelf. An inverse relationship was observed between catches per unit of effort CPUE and sea surface temperature. The highest CPUE values corresponded to temperatures lower than 19°C. Beyond that value, the possibility of obtaining a CPUE higher than the unit is nearly null and the low standard deviation means it is unlikely to reach high CPUE values. The economic profit per minute of each daily cruise was estimated using a case study carried out with a single vessel pilot with mean structural and...

Características de la red de cerco "tipo lámpara" y algunos comentarios sobre la flota que la utiliza en la pesca de caballa. OceanDocs
Izzo, A.; Boccanfuso, J..
The composition of the fleet is analyzed. The boats range 50-200 HP of engine and have 9-16 m in length overall. Most of the boats have been improving their equipment (echosounders, new engines) since 1980. An inverse relationship was found between sea surface temperature and CPUE as measured by mackerel catch permit time spent on fishing gounds. Yields are negligible over 20°C with a optimum of 20°C.

Comparative study on growth of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus Houttuyn, 1782) from three different regions: NW Mediterranean, NE and SW Atlantic OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Carvalho, N.; Isidro, E..
The von Bertalanffy growth parameters for chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) from the NW Mediterranean, along the Catalan coast (Spain), were estimated. These results constitute the first estimated values for chub mackerel in this area and were as follows: L∞(cm) = 39.75; K (years-1) = 0.298; t0 (years) = -1.40 (for age groups 0 to 8). These results were compared with the estimated growth parameters for the chub mackerel that inhabits other two regions: NE Atlantic (Azores) and SW Atlantic (Argentina). Significant differences in growth curves between regions were found when the growth parameters, L∞, K and t0, were simultaneously compared. When comparing the growth parameters L~! and K individually, significant differences between regions were also...
