DISTRIBUTION AND FEEDING ECOLOGY OF THE AFRICAN TILAPIA Oreochromis mossambicus (TELEOSTEI, PERCIFORMES, CICHLIDAE) IN SURINAME (SOUTH AMERICA) WITH COMMENTS ON THE TILAPIA-KWIKWI (Hoplosternum littorale) (TELEOSTEI, SILURIFORMEs, CALLICHTHYIDAE) INTERACTION Acta Amazonica
Η. ΜΟL,Jan; VAN DER LUGT,Frank L..
The geographical distribution of the African Tilapia Oreochromis mossambicusin Suriname is restricted to a narrow strip of land along the Atlantic coast. Within the coastal plain, O. mossambicusoccurs in brackish lagoons, oligohaline canals, and shell-sand pit lakes. Physico-chemical characteristics and phytoplankton composition of representative Tilapia water bodies are described. Blue-green algae and fine flocculent detritus are dominant food items in the diet of the Tilapia, while Rotifera and microcrustacea are also important in the diet of larvae and juveniles. Intraspecific diet overlap among ontogenetic stages of the Tilapia did not differ significantly from 1, which means that these diets showed complete overlap. Interspecific diet overlap between...

Further records of Auchenipteridae and Pimelodidae from Suriname (Pisces: Nematognathi) Naturalis
Mees, G.F..
Collections of freshwater-fishes, made in recent years in Suriname, have yielded four species of Auchenipteridae and ten species of Pimelodidae. Of the latter, two species, viz., Phractocephalus hemioliopterus and Pimelodus heteropleurus, are additions to the list given by Mees (1974: 237238), but the occurrence of Phractocephalus hemioliopterus in Suriname had already been mentioned by Geijskes (1973) and was thoroughly discussed by Boeseman (1983).

Genotype selection and addition of fertilizer increases grain yield in upland rice in Suriname. Repositório Alice
NASCENTE, A. S.; KROMOCARDI, R..
The upland rice farmers in Suriname use local varieties and low level technologies in the field. As a result, the upland rice grain yield is low, at about 1 000 kg ha-1. Our objective was to evaluate the use of upland rice cultivars from Suriname and Brazil, and the effect of nitrogen, N, phosphorus, P, and potassium, K, fertilizers on cultivation variables. We undertook four field trials in the Victoria Area, in the Brokopondo District, using a randomized block design each with four replications. The most productive rice varieties were BRS Esmeralda (grain yield 2 903 kg ha-1) and BRS Sertaneja (2 802 kg ha-1). The highest grain yield of 2 620 kg ha-1 was achieved with a top dressing application of 76.41 kg N ha-1 20 days after sowing. For P, the highest...

Guatteria richardii (Annonaceae) rediscovered along with two new species from French Guiana Naturalis
Scharf, U.; Maas, P.J.M.; Morawetz, W..
For the first time, 140 years after the collection of the first specimen and 70 years after the description of Guatteria richardii R.E. Fr. from French Guiana, more specimens that are referable to this species were discovered during a taxonomic treatment for the Flora of the Guianas project, concerning Guatteria Ruiz & Pav. (Annonaceae). In addition, G. intermedia and G. montis-trinitatis, two similar species – the first widely distributed and the second endemic to the Montagne de la Trinité in French Guiana, are described as new to science.

Rediscovery of a forgotten snake in an unexpected place and remarks on a small herpetological collection from southeastern Brazil Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S..
A collection of snakes and frogs collected in the area of Porto Real, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, was bought in December 1890 and remained unidentified until now. The collection comprises 100 snakes belonging to 18 species and 152 frogs belonging to 19 species. A comparison with the herpetofauna from nearby Serra do Japi in São Paulo is made. General remarks on variation and identification are made for a number of species. Among the snakes were two specimens of Cercophis aurata (Schlegel, 1837), a species described on the basis of one specimen from Suriname, and no new specimens having been recorded until now. The new individuals cause the known area of distribution to be greatly enlarged, but such a large distribution area occurs in several other snakes...
