Analysis of the European Market for Organic Food Organic Eprints
Hamm, Ulrich; Gronefeld, Friederike; Halpin, Darren.
"Analysis of the European market for organic food" is the first volume to be published by the OMIaRD project. In providing the most comprehensive and up to date information and analysis of European organic food markets, it offers important information in its own right but also contributes a foundation for further study. It covers all important aspects of the organic market, including production, consumption, foreign trade, supply deficits, prices and premiums. Nineteen countries have been separately investigated, and comparison and overview allow important policy and marketing conclusions to emerge.

Analysis of the spatial distribution of organic farming in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region of France: building a methodology for observation and prospective Organic Eprints
GENIAUX, G.; LAMBERT, M.; BELLON, S..
Analysis of the distribution of organic farming and its determinants is a major challenge for the construction of scenarios related to the evolution of organic farming that take the set of factors that limit or facilitate conversions and their sustainability into account. In order to support different development scenarios for organic farming in view of environmental and marketing challenges, an econometric and geostatistic study was initiated in the PACA region. The approach consists of three stages. The first stage involves the construction, over a 20-year period, of a longitudinal spatial database concerning certified organic producers and distributors. This database is georeferenced at the plot level. It will then be necessary to statistically analyse...

Anecic, endogeic, epigeic or all three - acknowledging the compositional nature of earthworm ecological group data in biodiversity analysis Organic Eprints
Wolfrum, Sebastian; Siebrecht, Norman; Papaja-Hülsbergen, Susanne; Kainz, Maximilian; Hülsbergen, Kurt-Jürgen.
Agriculture and biodiversity are closely connected. Especially the soil ecosystem is crucial in this relation. Earthworms are seen as good indicators for the health and functioning of the soil. Beneath different biodiversity measurese earthworm ecological group data is analysed to assess soil biodiversity, fertility and capability to deliver ecosystem services. However this kind of data is compositional and needs a special statistical treatment. New available methods for this purpose were applied to data from the BIOBIO project (www.biobio-indicator.org) to gain better understanding of the complex relationship between earthworms, agricultural management and environment.

Attitudes towards organic foods among consumers from the Mediterranean Arabic countries living in Italy. Organic Eprints
Ahmed, Abdel Munem.
This study investigates food habits in general and attitudes towards organic food products of consumers from the Mediterranean Arabic Countries (MACs) living in Italy. Organic food markets are still emerging in the consumers’ countries of origin. The questionnaire-based interview was administered to 211 consumers during Spring 2005. The results show that knowledge about organics is weak. Level of education has a strong influence on knowledge of organic food products. Workshops, universities and schools are the most effective sources for the real knowledge about organic agriculture. Consumption of organic foods slightly increased after immigration in Italy. Health and environmental concern are the main reasons to buy organics. High price and low...

Aufbau eines europäischen Informationssystems für den Öko-Markt Organic Eprints
Hamm, Prof. Dr. Ulrich; Recke, Dr. Guido.
While sufficient statistical data in the conventional food market enables decision-makers to opt for investments or policies on a well-founded basis, this data is lacking in the organic food market. A European Concerted Action project in co-operation with the EU statistical office, EUROSTAT, and funded by the European Union aims there-fore at developing a framework for collection and processing reliable and comprehen-sive data on organic markets. The first phase of the project with the aim of analysing the current situation and developing proposals is accomplished. The results are a number of detailed and specific suggestions to improve the data situation on the national and international level.

Ausstiegsabsichten und tatsächliche Ausstiegsgründe von Biobauern und Biobäuerinnen in Österreich - Analyse von Befragungsergebnissen Organic Eprints
Kirner, Dr. Leopold; Vogel, Dr. Stefan; Schneeberger, Dr. Walter.
Austria established an environmental program (ÖPUL) for agriculture in 1995, including direct payments for organic farming. To participate in this measure farmers have to commit themselves to a five year period. In 1999 a survey was conducted to find out, to which extent organic farmers intended to drop out of the measure organic farming and to collect information about their reasons for this intention. In 2002 a new survey was carried out to compare the intentions with the actual developments. In 2004 additional information was collected through telephone interviews. The aim of this study was a) to compare the intended with the actual behaviour, b) to compare the ex ante and ex post expressed reasons for leaving the measure organic farming and c) to find...

Bedeutung von Verbrauchereinstellungen für Kauf und Ausgabenhöhe bei Öko-Lebensmitteln Organic Eprints
Niessen, Jan.
In the past, predominantly interviews have been used to valuate the German demand for organic food and associated consumers’ attitudes. These interviews’ explanatory power is limited due to consumers’ overestimation of household expenditures, buying frequencies or quantity of organic food. When using consumer panels, it is possible to simultaneously examine realised behaviour together with attitudes of consumers obtained by panel insertions. Such methodology enables to identify which attitudes affect spending for organic food. Therefore these attitudes should be taken into account within applied marketing policy for organic food.

Befragung zum Status-Quo der Tierhaltung bei 287 süddeutschen Bio-Betrieben (Demeter- und Bioland)[Inquiry to the status quo of livestock husbandry in organic farms in southern germany] Organic Eprints
Hörning, B.; Aigner, S.; Aubel, E.; Schubbert, A.; Simantke, C.; Bussemas, R.; Trei, G..

Classification List for Land Use and Livestock Data Organic Eprints
Rippin, Markus.
This classification list for land use and livestock data was processed by the EISfOM project in order to provide a structured classification systematic to obtain comparable data and enable the exchange of data between national and Eurostat databases. A correspondence table - similiar to this - for every nation database should be defined, to link national codecs to those of Eurostat. The Cropitem/Livestock classification is used for land use/livestock data according to EU regulation 2092/91. The FFS codecs is used for Farm Structure Survey (conventional data) in the different countries.

Classification list for price data Organic Eprints
Rippin, Markus.
This classification list for price data was processed by EISfOM in order to provide a structured classification systematic to obtain comparable data and enable the exchange of data between national and Eurostat databases. A correspondence table for every national database should be defined, to link national codecs to those of Eurostat. As Eurostat uses a highly aggregated level of crop details (due to the lack of availability of data), member states should be free to use as many disaggregations as needed for their individual purposes, as case in the present list of ZMP in Germany. As long as a correspondence table is defined and data are recorded in a consistent structure, there should not be no problem to exchange data with Eurostat.

Feldmann , Corinna; Hamm, Ulrich.
In this report, a number of evaluation and quality criteria for data collection and compilation methods were defined. The results of an online survey on all existing organic market data collection methods in Europe were compiled and assessed. Subsequently the quality of existing data collection and processing approaches was evaluated using the following data quality dimensions: relevance, accuracy, comparability, coherence, accessibility and clarity, and timeliness and punctuality. The quality assessment was carried out exemplary to determine some good examples of data collection and processing. These cases were chosen because they delivered a very holistic and comprehensive presentation of their approaches regarding data collection methods, analyses,...

Comparing risk perceptions and risk management in organic and conventional dairy farming: empirical results from Norway Organic Eprints
Lien, Gudbrand; Flaten, Ola; Koesling, Matthias; Valle, Paul Steinar; Ebbesvik, Martha.
This study was conducted to explore organic and conventional dairy farmers’ perceptions of risk and risk management, and to examine relationships between farm and farmer characteristics, risk perceptions, and strategies. The data originate from a survey of conventional (n=363) and organic (n=162) dairy farmers in Norway. Organic farmers had the least risk averse perceptions. Institutional and production risks were perceived as primary sources of risk, with farm support payments at the top. Compared to their conventional colleagues, organic farmers gave more weight to institutional factors related to their production systems. Conventional farmers were more concerned about costs of purchased inputs and animal welfare policy. Organic and conventional farmers’...
