In Spring 2005 and Fall 2009 consumer surveys were collected in several Metropolitan 4 cities in Indiana and Illinois to explore differences based on psychographic and behavioral 5 characteristics of farmers’ market consumers. Consumer intercept surveys were conducted in: 6 South Bend, IN; Bloomington, IN; Springfield, IL and Peoria, IL. Likert scale questions were 7 analyzed using factor and hierarchical cluster analysis to identify clusters of consumers based on 8 several farmers’ market characteristics. Survey results show that of the 164 Metropolitan 9 surveys analyzed, 85.3% of respondents were Caucasian, 71.9% were between the ages of 35 and 10 64 and 78% were female. Data analysis showed that four clusters were formed: Recreational 11 (42%),... |

This is the first systematic survey of bees in the Pantanal wetland, Brazil. We recorded bee species and their floral resources within grassland and natural forest edge habitats in the Pantanal. Surveys were conducted during two to four-days per month, for a total of 12 months. Overall, we recorded 56 bee species visiting a total of 63 flowering plants. Asteraceae and Fabaceae presented the highest number of visited species, however Hyptis suaveolens (Lamiaceae) was the plant most visited by different bee species (18). The most generalist native bee was Trigona fuscipennis visiting a total of 17 flowering plant species. Apis mellifera, an exotic bee, visited 27 species. We also report the overlap (37.5%) in the use of floral resources between the exotic... |

Biotic surveys and a comprehensive literature review were undertaken to improve our knowledge of the biodiversity of Bioko and mainland Equatorial Guinea. Bird and mammal surveys were conducted on the mainland, and herpetological and arthropod surveys on Bioko, providing new information on species distributions and abundance. On the mainland, five areas within the proposed preserve system for Equatorial Guinea; Reserva Natural de Rio Campo, Parque Nacional de Los Altos de Nsork, Parque Nacional de Monte Alen (including Montes Mitra), and Reserva Natural del Estuario del Muni, were examined. On Bioko, the two proposed reserve areas, Parque Nacional de Pico Basilé Reserva Científica de la Caldera de Luba, as well as some lowland areas near Luba were... |

BACKGROUND: Twenty beavers Castor canadensis (Castoridae) were initially introduced in the Argentinean portion of Tierra del Fuego Island, from where they have occupied most of the Fuegian Archipelago and even reached the continent. This invasion is causing great damage to the subantarctic forest ecosystems, and it is not known how fast the species is spreading. While there is an estimation of this advance using interviews, it is not known how reliable these are and they cannot be made in remote areas. On the mainland, where beavers were present, their date of arrival was estimated using interviews and dendrochronology, and the dates obtained by both methods were compared for each site. RESULTS: Differences were found among the groups of respondents,... |

"Small trades" refers to the body of fishing boats, excepting the trawlers, which have a trawling license and the tuna/sardine boats, which have a pelagic fishing license. The ships that fish for small pelagic fish by using a lamp are only included for the other trades they ply, if applicable. Whereas certain "small trades" work offshore, the majority of them exploit the lagoons and coastal area. The importance of the coastal areas in general, where a large number of biological and ecological processes are being developed, need no longer be demonstrated: A large part of primary and secondary production takes place in these areas, which host moreover many reproduction and nursery sites for a great many species. "Small trade" fishing is one of the main... |
