Artificial neural networks employment in the prediction of evapotranspiration of greenhouse-grown sweet pepper AGRIAMBI
Pandorfi,Héliton; Bezerra,Alan C.; Atarassi,Roberto T.; Vieira,Frederico M. C.; Barbosa Filho,José A. D.; Guiselini,Cristiane.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to investigate the applicability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in the prediction of evapotranspiration of sweet pepper cultivated in a greenhouse. The used data encompass the second crop cycle, from September 2013 to February 2014, constituting 135 days of daily meteorological data, referring to the following variables: temperature and relative air humidity, wind speed and solar radiation (input variables), as well as evapotranspiration (output variable), determined using data obtained by load-cell weighing lysimeter. The recorded data were divided into three sets for training, testing and validation. The ANN learning model recognized the evapotranspiration patterns with acceptable accuracy, with mean square error of 0.005,...

Continuity, focus and impact: a commented historical perspective on Embrapa Vegetables' extended Capsicum breeding program Horticultura Brasileira
Reifschneider,Francisco JB; Lopes,Carlos A; Ribeiro,Cláudia SC.
ABSTRACT The article describes the origin, development and main results of Embrapa Vegetables' Capsicum breeding program, a continuous activity for more than three decades. The article points out and highlights how partnerships, both in Brazil and abroad, both with the public and the private sectors, were vital to the success of the program. The article also glosses over the development of the Capsicum germplasm bank and its importance to the breeding program, concluding with a set of faced challenges and lessons learned which might be of interest to other similar programs.

First record of Chrysoperla asoralis and C. argentina (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) in horticultural felds of La Plata associated with the sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Haramboure,Marina; Reguilón,Carmen; Alzogaray,Raúl A.; Schneider,Marcela Inés.
Chrisopids are economically significant predators of several agricultural pests. In Argentina, the species recorded of Chrysoperla Steinmann, 1964 are C. externa (Hagen, 1861), C. asoralis (Banks, 1915), C. argentina (González Olazo & Reguilón, 2002) and C. defreitasi (Brooks, 1994). Chrysoperla asoralis and C. argentina have been associated with citric, olive, maize and cotton crops. In the present note, we record for the first time these two species in La Plata and neighboring areas within the Buenos Aires province, in association with the sweet pepper, Capsicum annuum L.

Harvest-Expedition on Protected Cultivation: characterization and prospective study of the challenges and solutions associated with the protected cultivation of vegetable crops Horticultura Brasileira
Vieira,Débora de FA; Clemente,Flávia Maria VT.
ABSTRACT Farmers and the rural extension service in Planaltina, in the Federal District, an important pole of tomato and sweet pepper production in the Brazilian Midwest region, have been observing decreases in yield in protected cultivation lately. Yields are getting back to those registered in initial years of the system’s implementation in the region. Besides, prices paid to farmers dropped due to the retreat in fruit and vegetable consumption by Brazilians registered since 2015, triggering a crisis in the region. The so-called “Harvest-Expedition on Protected Cultivation” brought together Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), Emater-DF (Federal District Agency for Technical Assistance and Rural Extension) and SEAGRI-DF (State...

Inheritance of reaction to Leveillula taurica (Lev.) Arn. in Capsicum annuum L. Scientia Agricola
Blat,Sally Ferreira; Costa,Cyro Paulino da; Vencovsky,Roland; Sala,Fernando Cesar.
The use of fungicides to control powdery mildew in sweet pepper has been ineffective and genetic resistance is the best alternative. Resistance sources identified in Capsicum annuum L. are rare and unsatisfactory. The purpose of this work was to study the inheritance of C. annuum reaction to powdery mildew. Three homozygous powdery mildew resistant parents, HV-12, Chilli and #124 and three susceptible lines, 609, 442 and 428 were used to obtain seven F1's and respectively their generations F2: HV-12 x 609, 442 × HV-12, 428 × HV-12, Chilli × 609, #124 × 609, Chilli × HV-12 and #124 × HV-12. The powdery epidemic was natural using inoculum from highly sporulating susceptible pepper host. Powdery mildew host reaction evaluations were carried out during the...

Modern Supply Chains and Product Innovation: How Can Smallholder Farmers Benefit? AgEcon
Schipmann, Christin; Qaim, Matin.
There is an emerging body of literature analysing how smallholder farmers in developing countries can benefit from modern supply chains. However, most of the available studies concentrate on export markets and fail to capture spillover effects that modern supply chains may have on local markets. Here, we analyse the case of sweet pepper in Thailand, which was initially introduced as a product innovation in modern supply chains, but which is now widely traded also in more traditional markets. Using survey data from smallholder farmers and econometric techniques, we show that sweet pepper cultivation contributes significantly to higher household incomes. Strikingly, at this stage, participation in modern supply chains does not lead to higher incomes than...
