A new cryptic species of lizard (Sauria: Teiidae: Gymnophthalmus) from Venezuela Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Cole, C.J.; Ayarzaguena, J..
Gymnophthalmus cryptus spec. nov. is described and illustrated on the basis of males and females collected in the Territorio Federal Amazonas, southern Venezuela. Some details on ecology and distribution are also presented. The females of G. cryptus are very similar to the unisexual Gymnophthalmus underwoodi, which also occurs in the Guianan Region. In fact, G. cryptus is one of the best candidates for future genetic research to determine whether it is the missing ancestor of G. underwoodi, a parthenogenetic species of hybrid origin (G. speciosus x G. spec.?). Two other series of previously unreported species of Gymnophthalmus from Venezuela are also discussed.

Activation of a P2Y4-like purinoceptor triggers an increase in cytosolic [Ca2+] in the red blood cells of the lizard Ameiva ameiva (Squamata, Teiidae) BJMBR
Sartorello,R.; Garcia,C.R.S..
An increasing number of pathophysiological roles for purinoceptors are emerging, some of which have therapeutic potential. Erythrocytes are an important source of purines, which can be released under physiological and physiopathological conditions, acting on purinergic receptors associated with the same cell or with neighboring cells. Few studies have been conducted on lizards, and have been limited to ATP agonist itself. We have previously shown that the red blood cells (RBCs) of the lizard Ameiva ameiva store Ca2+ in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and that the purinergic agonist ATP triggers a rapid and transient increase of [Ca2+]c by mobilization of the cation from internal stores. We also reported the ability of the second messenger IP3 to discharge...

Descripción del sincraneo de Ameiva Ameiva (Linnaeus) (Squamata, Teiidae) Zoologia
Tedesco,María Esther; Krause,Ligia; Alvarez,Blanca Beatríz.
An osteological description of the syncranium and hyoid apparatus of Ameiva ameiva (Linnaeus, 1758) is presented. By comparison between males and females signiflcant intersexual differences were found in relation to: skull size, frontal, parietal and basisphenoid bones, interpterygoid opening and teeth number and mor-phology. Absence of pterygoid teeth in A. ameiva is verified out. The specimens used for this study carne from Chaco and Formosa provinces (Argentina).

Esqueleto pré-sacral e sacral dos lagartos teiêdeos (Squamata, Teiidae) Zoologia
Veronese,Lauren Betina; Krause,Lígia.
The morphology of the axial skeleton -pressacral and sacral regions - of the nine genera of Teiidae Boulenger, 1885 comprising Ameiva Meyer, 1795, Callopistes Gravenhorst, 1838, Cnemidophorus Wagler, 1830, Crocodilurus Spix, 1825, Dicrodon Duméril & Bibron, 1839, Dracaena Daudin, 1802, Kenlropyx Spix, 1825, Teius Merrem, 1820 and Tupinambis Daudin, 1803 is here analysed under a comparative approach. The study is in a generic levei, and the principal conclusions reter to differences on the total number of vertebrae and some aspects of the ribs, especially their insertion and presence.

Presencia del lagarto teiido Tupinambis en la Formación Monte Hermoso de Farola Monte Hermoso, sur de la provincia de Buenos Aires (Argentina) Ameghiniana
Albino,Adriana M; Tomassini,Rodrigo; Brizuela,Santiago.

Reproductive biology and sexual dimorphism in Cnemidophorus vacariensis (Sauria, Teiidae) in the grasslands of the Araucaria Plateau, southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Rezende-Pinto,Fabíola M.; Verrastro,Laura; Zanotelli,Juliana C.; Barata,Paulo C. R..
The reproductive cycle and sexual dimorphism of the lizard Cnemidophorus vacariensis Feltrim & Lema, 2000 were studied on the basis of data gathered between August 2004 and August 2006 in Vacaria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Snout-vent length (SVL) of sexually mature males varied between 48.8 and 72.9 mm (x = 63.3 ± 6.0 mm; n = 76) and, for females, between 57.4 and 81.8 mm (x = 70.0 ± 5.9 mm; n = 73). Other morphological characteristics were also compared between sexes. Reproduction was seasonal, and observations indicate two clutches in the same reproductive season. Clutch size and other reproductive characteristics were analyzed as well as the relation between reproduction and environmental factors. Cnemidophorus vacariensis is apparently endemic...
