Brazilian natural fiber (jute) as raw material for activated carbon production Anais da ABC (AABC)
ROMBALDO,CARLA F.S.; LISBOA,ANTONIO C.L.; MENDEZ,MANOEL O.A.; COUTINHO,APARECIDO R..
Jute fiber is the second most common natural cellulose fiber worldwide, especially in recent years, due to its excellent physical, chemical and structural properties. The objective of this paper was to investigate: the thermal degradation of in natura jute fiber, and the production and characterization of the generated activated carbon. The production consisted of carbonization of the jute fiber and activation with steam. During the activation step the amorphous carbon produced in the initial carbonization step reacted with oxidizing gas, forming new pores and opening closed pores, which enhanced the adsorptive capacity of the activated carbon. N2 gas adsorption at 77K was used in order to evaluate the effect of the carbonization and activation steps. The...

Chemical composition and fatty acids profile of chocolates produced with different cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) cultivars Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
MELO,Calionara Waleska Barbosa de; Bandeira,Matheus de Jesus; MACIEL,Leonardo Fonseca; BISPO,Eliete da Silva; SOUZA,Carolina Oliveira de; SOARES,Sérgio Eduardo.
Abstract The objective of the present study was to characterize the physicochemical composition and to quantify the fatty acids of chocolates produced from different cocoa varieties (Theobroma cacao L.) cultivated in the Southern Region of Bahia. Nine samples of monovarietal chocolates were evaluated, according to their physical, thermal and fatty acid profile. The results were subjected to tests of variance and multivariate statistics. The chocolates PH16 and TSH1188 presented higher melting point. It was possible to identify a linear correlation between the fat content of the chocolates and the break force parameter. The chocolates showed higher concentration of saturated fatty acids, mainly palmitic acid (16:0) and stearic acid (18:0), followed by the...

Crystal-chemistry of interstratified Mg/Fe-clay minerals from seafloor hydrothermal sites ArchiMer
Cuadros, Javier; Michalski, Joseph R.; Dekov, Vesselin; Bishop, Janice; Fiore, Saverio; Dyar, M. Darby.
Seafloor hydrothermal sites generate abundant Mg- and Fe-rich clays. These clays are structurally and compositionally interesting because these environments are characterized by large, dynamic temperature and chemical gradients in their deposition environment, which promote the formation of chemically and structurally complex clays, including interstratified phases. The system is also interesting as a proxy for the study of the large Mg- and Fe-rich phyllosilicate deposits on Mars, which are broadly characterized as smectitic clay of hydrothermal, volcanic or sedimentary origin. Thirty submarine samples and four terrestrial ones, for comparison, were studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), mid-IR and Mössbauer spectroscopies and...

SANTOS,Orquídea Vasconcelos dos; GONÇALVES,Bruno Santos; MACÊDO,Christine da Silva; CONCEIÇÃO,Leyvison Rafael Vieira da; COSTA,Carlos Emmerson Ferreira; MONTEIRO JÚNIOR,Ozéias Vieira; SOUZA,Amanda Larissa Garça de; LANNES,Suzana Caetano da Silva.
Abstract The objective of this research was to evaluate the quality parameters and the chromatographic, thermogravimetric, and spectroscopic profile of Patauá oil (Oenocarpus bataua). All analyses were performed according to the Recommended Practices of the American Oil Chemists’ Society (AOCS). The parameters obtained indicate conservation quality standards in accordance with Brazilian legislation. The fatty acid profile shows a predominance of ω-9, ω-6, and ω-3 fatty acids. The thermogravimetric behavior and differential analysis indicated good stability upon gradual temperature increase and the presence of endothermic and exothermic peaks characteristic of thermal and oxidative decomposition at high temperatures only. The spectroscopic profile evidenced...

Gravimetric determination of soil organic matter BABT
Miyazawa,M.; Pavan,M.A.; Oliveira,E.L. de; Ionashiro,M.; Silva,A.K..
Studies were carried out to evaluate a gravimetric method for the determination of soil organic matter by the mass loss at 300ºC. The gravimetric method was compared with Walkley-Black, using several brazilian soils with variable chemical and physical properties. Gravimetric method was positively correlated with Walkley-Black method with the following linear regression equation: y = 3.72x + 0.29, r = 0.94. The angular coefficient 3.72 for tropical soils was greater than those reported in the literature for temperate soils (from 1.68 to 2.13). The difference was due to greater oxidation degree of the organic matter. When compared with Walkley-Black method, gravimetric technique showed certain distinct advantages such as no environmental contamination with...

Thermal and spectroscopic analyses on the molecular interaction between eucalyptus kraft pulp components and offset printing inks BABT
Alves,Ericka Figueiredo; Oliveira,Rubens Chaves de; Silva,Luis Henrique Mendes da; Colodette,Jorge Luiz.
Thermal and infrared spectroscopic analyzes were carried out in order to study the kind of interaction between the anatomical components of the bleached eucalyptus kraft pulp with offset inks. A Bauer-McNett fiber classifier was used in order to obtain the anatomical components of the pulp, separately. The determinations of the enthalpy of the processes occurring in the samples of inks and pulp, as well as the enthalpy of these components interactions were obtained by Differential Scanning Calorimetry. In the interaction between pulp and offset ink, the reduced enthalpy values of the endothermic peak were interpreted as due to the released energy for adhesion of the ink pigment to the substratum. The low enthalpy value, 58 to 121 cal.g -, ¹indicated that...
