In order to determine the effect of soil management on its thermal properties, undisturbed soil samples were taken from two tillage treatments (conventional and conservation treatment) at two depths (0-30cm and 30-60cm) of a Stagnic Luvisol (silt loam) before and after directly wheeling. The experimental field, located in Harste/Goettingen, Germany, was cultivated with sugar beet (Beta vulgaris). The machinery stock, fuel consumption and work time are crucial economic factors for the profit potential in the arable farming sector.  The influence of five soil tillage systems (two conventional tillage systems and three conservation tillage systems) and two tractor sizes (92 kW-tractor and 59 kW-tractor) on work time, fuel and energy consumption was measured in the semi-arid region in Austria.  The tractors were equipped with a high-performance flow meter and a radar sensor to measure the fuel consumption (L h-1) and working speed (km h-1).  The conventional tillage with mouldboard plough has the highest working time and fuel consumption rate.  The replacement of plough with a cultivator, reduces the work time and fuel consumption for soil tillage as...

Roots may respond to restrictive soil physical conditions and send signals to shoots to control plant growth. Soil mechanical resistance and aeration can be managed to improve the soil physical conditions for plant growth by using different tillage systems. The objective of this study was to quantify the influence of no-tillage and conventional-tillage systems on plant response to soil mechanical resistance and aeration. Resumo: A disponibilidade de água no solo é uma das grandes preocupações em sistema de produção de cana-de-açúcar, onde o trânsito intenso de máquinas leva a compactação e comprometimento produtivo do solo. Neste sentido o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar de forma preliminar o potencial mátrico do solo sob preparo/plantio reduzido, direto e convencional de cana-de-açúcar. Para isto foi conduzido experimento de preparo/plantio em área comercial de cana-de-açúcar, usando a variedade IAC SP5000 em Latossolo vermelho acriférrico, no município de Guaíra-SP. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar variáveis microbiológicas e produtividade do feijoeiro em razão do manejo do solo e da calagem. Parte de uma área cultivada há 20 anos em plantio direto (PD) foi submetida ao cultivo mínimo (CM), com escarificação a 0,25 m de profundidade, para incorporação do calcário. Os tratamentos consistiram de manejo do solo (PD e CM) e 0 e 2 t ha-1 de calcário dolomítico aplicadas na superfície, com quatro repetições. Os maiores valores de C da biomassa microbiana foram verificados no CM e os de C de CO2 liberado no PD sem calagem. Merrill), there is still dearth of information on the tillage need and the implications of surface mulch for the crop in the eastern part of the forest-savanna transition zone of Nigeria. This study was therefore carried out on a sandy loam Ultisol at Nsukka with a sub-humid climate, during 2006 and 2007 cropping seasons. ABSTRACT Tillage systems can influence C sequestration by changing aggregate formation and C distribution within the aggregate. This study was undertaken to explore the impact of no-tillage without straw (NT-S) and with straw (NT+S), and moldboard plow without straw (MP-S) and with straw (MP+S), on soil aggregation and aggregate-associated C after six years of double rice planting in a Hydragric Anthrosol in Guangxi, southwest of China.
