Crevelari,Jocarla Ambrosim; Durães,Nayara Norrene Lacerda; Santos,Paulo Ricardo dos; Azevedo,Flávio Henrique Vidal; Bendia,Laila Cecília Ramos; Preisigke,Sandra da Costa; Gonçalves,Gabriel Moreno Bernardo; Ferreira Junior,José Arantes; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to assess whether there is linear dependence between groups of morphoagronomic and bromatological traits in hybrid silage corn. Nineteen topcross hybrids and five checks were assessed in two different environments in Campos dos Goytacazes and Itaocara counties, Rio de Janeiro State, during the growing seasons 2013/2014. The study followed a randomized blocks design with four replicates. The phenotypic and canonical correlations between the groups of seven morphoagronomic and five bromatological traits were assessed. There is linear dependence between the group pairs of morphoagronomic, and bromatological variables. The morphoagronomic trait green mass yield can be adopted in indirect selection processes to indicate the...

ABSTRACT: The growing demand for quality of papaya by the domestic and international markets requires the development of genotypes that are capable of incorporating traits, such as high yield and fruit quality. This study estimated the genetic parameters and the specific combining ability of F4 papaya lines crossed to the SS-72/12 tester to identify genotypes with higher genetic value for hybrid production. We evaluated 169 treatments consisting of 62 topcross hybrid combinations, 97 F5 lines, and 10 controls in a 13 × 13 lattice design with five replicates and two plants per plot. The following traits were evaluated: plant height (PH), stem diameter (SD), first-fruit insertion height (FFIH), number of marketable fruits (NMF), number of deformed fruits...

Pena,Guilherme Ferreira; Amaral Júnior,Antonio Teixeira do; Gonçalves,Leandro Simões Azeredo; Vivas,Marcelo; Ribeiro,Rodrigo Moreira; Mafra,Gabrielle Sousa; Santos,Adriano dos; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
ABSTRACT The use of topcross has proven to be an interesting option for the maize crop; however, for the popcorn, there is little information about the choice of the appropriate tester. In this context, this study aimed to analyze four testers including two open pollinated varieties(BRS Angela and UENF-14), one topcross hybrid (IAC125) and a line (P2), to evaluate the combining ability of 50 S3 families of popcorn, obtained from the UENF-14 variety. Popcorn families were evaluated for grain yield (GY) and popping expansion (PE). The estimates of general and specific combining abilities were obtained and the discrimination of each tester through differentiation index was carried out. The testers BRS Angela (for GY) and IAC 125 (for PE) were the most...

ABSTRACT Thirty-eight S3 families obtained by selfing from IAC-125 popcorn hybrid were evaluated by three different topcross tester parents: an inbred line P3.3- S7 generation taken from popcorn population CMS-42, an open-pollinated variety BRS Angela and the commercial three-way hybrid Jade. Manual crossings were performed according to a partial diallel mating design. Topcross hybrids were evaluated in individual experiments for each tester carried out in randomized block designs with three replications in two locations (Maringá-Paraná and Sabáudia-Paraná). The results for grain yield and popping expansion were gathered in a combined analysis. Estimates of general and specific combining ability were obtained according to Griffing's methodology (1956),...

Correlations between agronomic traits and path analysis for silage production in maize hybrids 53
Crevelari,Jocarla Ambrosim; Durães,Nayara Norrene Lacerda; Bendia,Laila Cecília Ramos; Vettorazzi,Julio Cesar Fiorio; Entringer,Geovana Cremonini; Ferreira Júnior,José Arantes; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga.
ABSTRACT The aim of the current study is to estimate the correlation coefficients and the consequence of genotypic correlations on direct and indirect effects through path analysis between agronomic traits of maize hybrids used for silage production. Eight (8) topcross hybrids and seven (7) checks were analyzed in completely randomized blocks, with six replications, in two environments: Campos do Goytacazes and Itaocara counties – Rio de Janeiro State, in the crop year 2015/2016. The following agronomic traits were assessed: plant height, first ear height, culm diameter, number of ears, ear yield with straw at silage maturity, ear yield without straw at silage maturity, grain yield at silage maturity, grains ratio in the fresh matter and fresh matter...

Evaluation of the average performance of topcrosses among food and grain type soybean 52
Yokomizo,Gilberto K.; Vello,Natal A..
The food type soybean (exotic) are, in general, non-adapted to the Brazilian growing conditions. A breeding strategy to develop adapted food type soybean should involve crossing exotic with the available grain type genotypes. We evaluated the performance of topcrosses among food type and grain type soybeans. Best progenies showed different performance rates in each environment and they were not always the same in the different environments and joint analysis of lodging (L), plant height at maturity (PHM) and agronomic value (AV) was essential to avoid selection of plants with good performance for one trait and bad for another.) Piracicaba autumn environment (PA) caused low individual plant yield performance (IPY), and consequently, cultivation was not...

Baretta,Diego; Nardino,Maicon; Carvalho,Ivan Ricardo; Pelegrin,Alan Junior de; Ferrari,Mauricio; Oliveira,Victoria Freitas de; Szareski,Vinícius Jardel; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de; Barros,Willian Silva; Souza,Velci Queiróz de; Maia,Luciano Carlos da.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of intervarietal corn (Zea mays) hybrids with topcross crosses between landrace populations, and to confirm whether genetic dissimilarity between populations is correlated with the heterosis of the intervarietal hybrids in the field. Nine topcross hybrids were evaluated with their tester 'BRS Planalto', and the following landrace populations were used as parents: Argentino Branco, Dente de Ouro, Amarelão, Criolão, Caiano Rajado, Branco Oito Carreiras, Branco Roxo Índio, Cateto Branco, and Argentino Amarelo. The tester 'BRS Planalto' and the topcross hybrids Branco Oito Carreiras x 'BRS Planalto' and Criolão x 'BRS Planalto' showed higher per se potential for grain yield. The topcross...

Physiological quality in seeds obtained by topcrosses between vegetable soybean and grain type 52
Yokomizo,Gilberto K.; Vello,Natal A..
Attempts were made to study the gene introgression for high physiological quality from adapted cultivars in the vegetable soybean (exotic). Promising results were obtained for all topocrosses, with increased in germination percentage in majority. General mean of the germination percentage in topcrosses with large seeds exotic parental showed an increase from 28 to 46%, and topcrosses with small seeds exotic parental, from 54 up to 60%, both cases compared to self pollinated exotic parental. Related to variance, the topcrosses showed higher values than the self pollinated exotic parental, showing to be possible the selecion of promising materials.

Potential of the ESA23B maize population for protein and oil content improvement 63
Mittelmann,Andréa; Miranda Filho,José Branco de; Lima,Gustavo Júlio Mello Monteiro de; Hara-Klein,Claudete; Tanaka,Ricardo Takao.
Among the traits that may add commercial value to maize (Zea mays L.), those related to nutritional quality, specially protein and oil content, are of great interest to the feed industry. The objective of this work was studying the variability of protein and oil content, as well as yield, in a group of maize testcrosses. One hundred and twenty S1 families of the ESA23B maize population were crossed with two testers, an open-pollinated population (BR108) and an exotic line (CML269). Testcrosses were evaluated at two locations under a completely randomized block design with three replications. Ear and grain yield, protein and oil content were evaluated. The three-way interaction location x tester x progeny was significant for all traits, except for oil...
