This present paper aims to present a historical evolution of the tourism industry, focusing on the reflexes of the industrial management paradigms as well as those of some technological innovations on it, show its features emphasizing its differences in relation to other industry forms and reflect on its trends in Brazil, considering the participation of the rural segment. Through the historical evolution, one verifies that the movements of other forms of industry, as far as growth is concerned, technological innovations and changes in management patterns have reflected directly on tourism industry. There is a trend in formation of networks, as a managerial alternative to small and medium size companies, and it happens to adapt to the tourism industry’s... |

We present a new method for ecologically sustainable land use planning within multiple land use schemes. Our aims were (1) to develop a method that can be used to locate important areas based on their ecological values; (2) to evaluate the quality, quantity, availability, and usability of existing ecological data sets; and (3) to demonstrate the use of the method in Eastern Finland, where there are requirements for the simultaneous development of nature conservation, tourism, and recreation. We compiled all available ecological data sets from the study area, complemented the missing data using habitat suitability modeling, calculated the total ecological score (TES) for each 1 ha grid cell in the study area, and finally, demonstrated the use of TES in... |

The 1997-1998 El Nino southern oscillation (ENSO) caused elevated sea temperatures that resulted in global coral bleaching. Coral reefs constitute an important biological resource in terms of their complex biodiversity and are the basis for tropical reef fisheries and marine ecotourism. They represent one of Mozambique's main coastal assets and its coastal communities and growing tourism industry rely mainly on reef-based resources. Mozambican artisanal fisheries are largely centred on reefs and are responsible for about 70% of the total catch, highlighting their importance. Most tourism similarly occurs along the coast where the best infrastructure is established, especially near the coral reefs of Pemba, Mozambique Island, the Bazaruto Archipelago,... |

The Cretan tourism sector has been characterised by a large and rapid growth from 1970 to 2000 and has gone on the primary industry of the island. Despite the fact that this growth has seemed stagnant over the last few years, tourism is still of vital importance for the local economy. Agricultural industries are strongly linked with tourism activities and usually derive numerous benefits from them. Understanding tourists’ opinions and demands plays a crucial role in implementing appropriate and sustainable future agricultural offer strategies on the island in the future. As several studies have previously indicated, the current global economic and financial crisis has deeply cut household expenditure and 2009 has been predicted to be a difficult year for... |

This paper shows that it is difficult, if not impossible, to formulate policies that guarantee that tourism can be maintained for a long time without severely impacting on the environment. The analysis is purely theoretical and is based on very simple and general assumptions about the interactions between the three main components of the system: the tourists, the environment, and the capital. These assumptions are encapsulated in a so-called minimal model, used to predict the economic and environmental impact of any given policy. This paper is of value for three reasons. First, it introduces the approach of minimal descriptive models in the context of tourism, which has traditionally been dominated by the use of black-box econometric models. Second, the... |

Swinburne University (Langworthy, Howard, Fiona & Mawson, 2006), agri-tourism is a growing phenomenon in Australia, often most strongly associated with wine regions. Recommendations to improve include creation of tourism regions & cooperatives, cooperation between sectors (CVBs, restaurants), infrastructure development and model development to measurable factors. South African wineries Bruwer, 2003 identified factors that were helpful in developing a wine tourism market of South African wineries. Regarding South Africa wine tourism, areas of winery business that promote tourism include both service provision and destination marketing, development of wine routes forms an integral part of the wine tourism industry, estates sell more wine through... |

Provides background on the development and nature of Antarctic tourism and associated environmental issues, as well as agreements and regulations affecting environmental management in Antarctica. Following an outline of the survey methodology and provision of information on the socioeconomic profiles of the respondents, results of a survey of Antarctic tourists on the Russian registered ship the ‘Akademik Ioffe’ are reported. The importance of Antarctic wildlife as an attraction for these Antarctic tourists is then given particular attention. The study considers amongst other things how important Antarctic wildlife was in convincing these tourists to undertake their trip to Antarctica, the importance to the tourists of seeing different species of... |
