Epidermal characteristics of toxic plants for cattle from the Salado River basin (Buenos Aires, Argentina) Boletín de la Sociedad
Freire,Susana E.; Arambarri,Ana M.; Bayón,Néstor D.; Sancho,Gisela; Urtubey,Estrella; Monti,Claudia; Novoa,María C.; Colares,Marta N..
One hundred and eighty species belonging to 41 families inhabiting the Salado River Basin of the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina) were previously reported to be toxic for cattle. The purpose of this study was to provide a tool to distinguish the taxa when the plant material is desintegrated. In this way, an approach to the identification of these taxa through leaf epidermal features (anticlinal epidermal cell wall patterns, cuticular ornamentation, stomata, and hair types) is performed. A key to the 180 species as well as illustrations of diagnostic characters are given.

Experimental poisoning by Niedenzuella stannea in cattle and corresponding detection of monofluoroacetate Ciência Rural
Arruda,Felipe Peixoto de; Caldeira,Flávio Henrique Bravim; Ducatti,Kássia Renostro; Bezerra,Kalinne Stephanie; Marcolongo-Pereira,Clairton; Lee,Stephen Tomas; Cook,Daniel; Riet-Correa,Franklin; Colodel,Edson Moleta.
ABSTRACT: In Brazil sodium monofluoroacetate (MFA) containing plants are represented by 16 species that belong to three principle genera: Palicourea ( Rubiaceae ), Amorimia ( Malpighiaceae ), and Tanaecium ( Bignoniaceae ). These plants can cause acute cardiac failure often referred to as sudden death syndrome. The objective of this paper was to determine if N. stannea contains MFA and to report the clinical signs and pathology of cattle experimentally poisoned by this plant. MFA was detected in all N. stannea plant parts except mature leaves. Niedenzuella stannea was dosed to cattle at single doses of 15-30g kg-1 bw. Clinical signs and pathology observed were similar to those reported by other MFA-containing plants. Animals showed marked tachycardia,...

IMPACTO ECONÓMICO DE LAS PLANTAS TÓXICAS PARA EL GANADO SOBRE LA PRODUCCIÓN PECUARIA EN SONORA AgEcon
Denogean Ballesteros, Francisco G.; Moreno Medina, Salomon; Martin Rivera, Martha H.; Ibarra Flores, Fernando A..
Almost in all vegetation types exists species that can cause toxicity to the cattle grazing. Poisonings cause very diverse problems in the cattle being able to affect the reproduction, weight gains, and even death. These problems cause economic losses in cattle industry that is necessary to quantify but very difficult to do so. Sonora has been diagnosed with overgrazed rangelands which is pronounced in deterioration that diminishes the desirable species and increases the undesirable ones, within these are the toxic plants. There have been identified 181 species that are toxic and within these there are 59 species that cattle consumes and cause problems. Based in this, the present study was planned with the purpose of trying to estimate the economic impact...

Spontaneous and experimental poisoning of cattle by Palicourea aeneofusca in the region of Pernambuco and induction of conditioned food aversion Ciência Rural
Brito,Luiz Bezerra de; Albuquerque,Raquel Feitosa; Rocha,Brena Pessoa; Albuquerque,Samuel Salgado; Lee,Stephen Tomas; Medeiros,Rosane Maria Trindade; Riet-Correa,Franklin; Mendonça,Fábio de Souza.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical, and pathological aspects of Palicourea aeneofusca poisoning in cattle in the region of Pernambuco, Brazil and to determine if it is possible to induce food aversion by P. aeneofusca poisoning in cattle raised under extensive management conditions. To determine the occurrence of poisoning, 30 properties were visited in five municipalities of the region of Pernambuco. Three outbreaks of poisoning of cattle were monitored. To induce conditioned food aversion by the consumption of P. aeneofusca, 12 animals were randomly distributed into two groups of six animals each. Cattle were weighed and received green P. aeneofusca leaves in their trough at a dose of 35mg kg-1 body weight...
