Alien species alert: Crassostrea gigas (Pacific oyster) ArchiMer
Miossec, Laurence; Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Goulletquer, Philippe.
The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg, 1793) is one of 20 species in the genus Crassostrea. Although native to the Japan/Korea region, C. gigas is a hardy species that has been introduced to a number of countries worldwide, including the US, Canada, the UK, France, Korea, China, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and South America, mainly for aquaculture purposes (Mann et al., 1991; Orensanz et al., 2002). As a result, C. gigas has become the leading species in world shellfish culture, with an estimated production of 4.6 million t in 2006 (FAO, 2008). Because C. gigas does not require additional food to sustain its growth, this species is relatively inexpensive and easy to produce. Its capacity to adapt to various environmental conditions and...

Employment and Transfer Status of Female Labor Force in Rural China AgEcon
Wang, Dongping; Peng, Jianqiang; Yan, Zhen.
Official statistics are used to expatiate the general state of female labor force employment and transfer in rural China. According to the “structure” problem of female labor force transfer, it is pointed out that the overall cultural quality of rural women is relatively low, a large number of rural middle-aged women stay at home, social security system is lacked and the social service system is not perfect, which are the major factors restricting the transfer of rural female labor force. Therefore, according to the problems in employment and transfer of female labor force in rural China, countermeasures are put forward, which are ① improving cultural quality, skill and competitiveness of rural female labor force, ② perfecting labor market and social...

Etat des connaissances sur la pathologie chez les mollusques bivalves ArchiMer
Fouche, Dominique.
A short description of the disease causing organisms affecting bivalves is presented in this document, including the diagnosis, the oustanding research and bivalve husbandry. Mollusc populations may be safe from disease epizootics if an early prevention of disease is coupled with a strict regulatory system on transfer (according to what happens in agriculture). The species to culture may be thoroughly selected and risky populations moved. Imported stocks are strictly controlled. The researchcs's target is to improve the diagnosis tools and try to find resistant mollusc strains. Epidemiological surveys are also necessary to control diseases.

Information Asymmetry and the Problem of Transfers in Trade Negotiations and International Agencies AgEcon
Hamada, Koichi; Sunder, Shyam.
This paper studies the role of transfers among groups within a country as well as among countries in a two level game of international trade negotiations. We show that in order to realize the intended transfer in the presence of asymmetric information on the states of recipients (and donors), a transfer process uses up additional resources. The difficulty of making transfers renders it less likely that a nation would find it individually rational to participate as a member of an international institution. Costly transfers render the internal and international adjustment difficult, and serve as a barrier to trade liberalization. Costly international transfers harden the resistance against trade liberalization in the (potentially) recipient country and...

Notes on the neotropical genus Macrinus (Araneae: Sparassidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Rheims,Cristina A..
Macrinus Simon, 1887 can be diagnosed by the twisted tegulum with a distal retrolateral laminar projection and the fulcrum with a prolateral serrated projection on the male palp and by the copulatory ducts with an anterior, fused hyaline part and a median long and sclerotized part ending at a slightly rounded spermathecae in the female epigynum. The genus currently includes three species: Macrinus succineus Simon, 1887 and M. jaegeri Rheims, 2007, from Brazil, and M. pollexensis (Schenkel, 1953) from Venezuela. In this paper I describe two new species: Macrinus bambuco sp. nov. and Macrinus calypso sp. nov. The first is based on a male from Lomalinda, Colombia, and is distinguished from the remaining Macrinus by the presence of a retrolateral triangular...

Planning farm succession: how to be successful AgEcon
Stephens, Mike.
Planning farm succession is really good farm planning in its broadest aspect. Unfortunately very few farmers and their families have devoted sufficient time to working out how the farm business will be transferred. After demonstrating the importance of the farm succession issue, this article goes on to explaining a method of successfully tackling the process.

The Transfer of Benefit Measures: The Applicability Conditions and the Results AgEcon
Stellin, Giuseppe; Candido, Alice.
The benefit transfer refers to the use and adaptation of benefit measures obtained for a specific site (study site), to assess the benefits in another site (policy site), for which no original valuation is possible. Relying on relatively simplicity of application, and allowing saving time and money for the implementation, it represents a ‘second best’ solution and a valid alternative to the disregarding environmental economic values. The literature broadly agrees in considering two main approaches to benefit transfer: the transfer of a value or of a benefit function. The choice of the more suitable approach relies on the number of potential primary studies, the similarity degree between the study and the policy sites, on the purposes of the assessment and...

The use of participatory processes in wide-scale dissemination of micro dosing and conservation agriculture in Zimbabwe AgEcon
Pedzisa, Tarisayi; Minde, Isaac J.; Twomlow, Steve.
Participatory technology development has been used for quite some time. However, little is known about how farmers perceive participatory methods and processes. Understanding farmers’ concerns about the participatory process can be an important starting point and can further the ultimate aim of encouraging sustained technology adoption. An ex-post participatory technology development and transfer evaluation was carried out in Zimbabwe in 2006/07 involving 231 farmers. It was revealed that use of demonstration trials encouraged the most participation and subsequent adoption and adaptation of the technologies to suit specific needs. The participatory nature of the process encouraged greater knowledge sharing among farmers and gave them more confidence in the...

Thermodynamic study of the solubility of ibuprofen in acetone and dichloromethane BJPS
Aragón,Diana Marcela; Rosas,Jaiver Eduardo; Martínez,Fleming.
Thermodynamic functions, Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy for the solution processes of ibuprofen (IBP) in acetone and dichloromethane (DCM) were calculated from solubility values obtained at temperatures ranging from 293.15 K to 313.15 K. The respective thermodynamic functions for mixing and solvation processes as well as the activity coefficients for the solute were calculated. IBP solubility was high and proved similar in both solvents but was greater in DCM than acetone. In addition, the thermodynamic quantities for the transfer process of this drug from cyclohexane to the organic solvents were also calculated in order to estimate the contributions of hydrogen-bonds or of other dipolar interactions. The results were discussed in terms of...

Transfer of toxic substances from feed to food R. Bras. Zootec.
Kan,Cornelis Adriaan.
The title may raise questions about definitions of the terms used. The more obvious ones are: 1) What is transfer? 2) How to define toxic; and 3) How to define feed or food. A more underlying question is how to measure the substances we are interested in. The (often) chemical methods used, are not always sensitive or specific enough. Sometimes, biologically based methods are used which detect a biological response, but seldom identify the compound responsible for that. Transfer is often not quantified in absolute terms but expressed in concentrations in feed and food. Mass balance between intake and excretion are quite rare as a steady state situation of residues in the animal is sometimes not obtained. Toxicity is mostly dependent on the concentration of...
