Trawling for penaeid shrimps in Sofala Bank (central Mozambique) has been suggested to have major effects on the size of sea turtle populations. A total of 39 commercial fishers, fishery observers and enforcers were interviewed to assess the level of sea turtle catches in fishing operations and reported that at least 1,735±1,235 sea turtles are caught each fishing season of about seven months. Green turtle (Chelonia mydas, 48.4%), the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta, 25.8%) were the most common species, but catches also comprised the olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea),the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea). Over 54.8% of the incidents occur within a few miles of the small islands forming the Primeiras... |

The Brazilian prawn fishery, as other bottom trawling fisheries, is considered quite efficient in catching the target species but with low selectivity and high rates of bycatch. The family Sciaenidae prevails among fish species caught. The study was conducted in the Pernambuco State (Barra de Sirihaém), northeastern Brazil. From August 2011 to July 2012, 3,278 sciaenid specimens were caught, distributed into 16 species, 34.2% males and 41.5% females. Larimus breviceps, Isopisthus parvipinnis, Paralonchurus brasiliensis and Stellifer microps were the most abundant species. The area was considered a recruitment and reproduction area with the highest reproductive activity between December 2011 and July 2012. The constant frequency of mature I. parvipinnis and... |

The regression of seagrass meadows has been extensively studied over the past few years. Although the causes of this regression may be locally natural, it is more generally related to human impact. In the framework of the HalGolo (2010) and CoralCorse (2013) oceanographic campaigns, acoustic data (mosaic of sonograms and bathymetry), validated by field data (Scuba diving, ROV), were acquired at depths of -10 m and -50 m at the NATURA 2000 site “Grand Herbier de la Plaine Orientale” (Western Mediterranean, Corsica). Processing of this data provided evidence of the scale of this mechanical degradation (trawling scars, mooring, etc.), and enabled its quantification with regard to surface area and scar density. The main degradation was observed between -20 and... |

lfremer carries out a yearly bottom trawl survey named Channel Ground Fish Survey (CGFS) in order to collect essential biological data on major exploited fish species in the Eastern Channel. These data are also provided to feed the indispensable historie series to the yearly assessment of resources. This report presents results of the CGFS surveys for 1997 and 1998, under two aspects: a multispecific approach of the biological assemblages and integrating an interannual analysis, then a monospecific analysis of 7 species of commercial interest, as whiting, pout, cod, red gurnard, plaice, black bream, red mullet.

As part of the development of the project “Reducing the impact of tropical shrimp trawling fisheries on living marine resources through the adoption of environmentally friendly techniques and practices”, mainly funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), four regional workshops were conducted during the period between December 1999 and March 2000 in Nigeria, Costa Rica, Iran and Indonesia. The main objectives of the workshops were to review the situation with regard to impact on the environment of shrimp trawling in each of the four regions and in the 13 participating countries in particular, and to discuss and agree on regional priorities and content of a possible main phase project..... |
