Bacciger pellonaen. sp. (Trematoda, Fellodistornidae) from a freshwater fish, Pellona castelnaeanaValenciennes of Rondônia State, Brazil Acta Amazonica
Thatcher,Vernon E..
Bacciger pellonae n. ep. (Trematoda, Fellodistomidae) is described from the intestinal tract of a freshwater fish, Pellona castelnaeana Valenciennes, from the Brazilian state of Rondônia. The new species is similar to the type species of the genus, B. bacciger (Rudolphi, 1819) Nicoli, 1914, but differs from it in having a post-testicular, lobate ovary, intertesticular ceca and an acetabulum that is smaller than the genus to be reported from South America and the first from freshwater.

Belostoma dilatatum (Dufour) (Hemiptera, Belostomatidae) hosting metacercariae of Stomylotrema vicarium Braun (Digenea, Stomylotrematidae) in southern Brazil Zoologia
Amato,Suzana B.; Amato,José F. R..
Giant water bugs (aquatic Heteroptera), Belostoma dilatatum (Dufour, 1863), were collected in rice plantation water canals, in the Municipality of Eldorado do Sul, outskirts of Porto Alegre, State of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Five specimens were dissected with the objective of finding metacercariae of digenetic trematodes. Four of them (80%) were positive for metacercarial cysts of Stomylotrema vicarium Braun, 1901. The intensities of infection varied from 1 to 16 metacercariae per host (average 7.6). The cysts were whitish, translucent, and found loose among the viscera, in the abdominal and thoracic cavities. Belostoma dilatatum is a new host record for metacercarial cysts of stomylotrematid digenetic trematodes and this is the first time that...

Canaania obesa (Platyhelminthes: Dicrocoeliidae): redescription and new hosts records Rev. Bras. Zool.
Maldonado Junior,Arnaldo; Pinheiro,Jairo; Simões,Raquel de O.; Lanfredi,Reinalda M..
The digenetic trematode Canaania obesa Travassos, 1944 (Dicrocoeliidae) was described as a parasite of the bile ducts of the rodent Akodon cursor Winge, 1887 (Cricetidae) collected in Santa Teresa, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. In the present study, we report the occurrence of C. obesa infecting three additional sigmodontinae rodent species: Akodon montensis Thomas, 1913; Oligoryzomys nigripes Olfers, 1818 and Nectomys squamipes Brants, 1827, from three municipalities situated at Serra dos Órgãos, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Scanning electron microscopy showed that this helminth has a leaf-like shape with conical extremities and the ventral mid body protrudes at the acetabulum level. The microtopography of the tegument shows a heterogeneous surface with...

Paes, Jaciara Vanessa Krüger; Unesp - Campus de Botucatu; Carvalho, Edmir Daniel; Unesp - Campus de Botucatu; Silva, Reinaldo José; Unesp - Campus de Botucatu.
This study aimed to evaluate the infection by the Austrodiplostomum compactum metacercariae in fishes from the Nova Avanhandava Reservoir, low Tietê river, São Paulo State, Brazil. The parasites were collected from eye (aqueous and vitreous humor), fixed in AFA solution and stained with carmine. The morphometric analysis was performed using a computerized system for analysis of images QWin Lite 2.5 (Leica). Prevalence, mean intensity of infection and abundance of infected fish were calculated. Of the 22 species of fish registered, five were infected by metacercariae: Hoplias malabaricus, Metynnis maculatus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, Satanoperca pappaterra and Schizodon nasutus. Of the 627 fish evaluated, 34% were infected. A higher prevalence was...

Infection characteristics of Himasthla elongata cercariae in cockles as a function of water current ArchiMer
De Montaudouin, X; Wegeberg, Am; Jensen, Kt; Sauriau, Pg.
Digenean trematodes are widespread parasites of marine fauna. The first intermediate host of Himasthla elongata (Echinostomatidae) is the periwinkle Littorina littorea. The second host is less specific, as it includes Various bivalve species. The definitive host is a waterbird. The free-living cercaria acts to ensure transmission from the first and second intermediate hosts. We examined the impact of water flow (still and running water) and host size (6-8, 8-10, 10-12 mm shell length classes) on the settling success of H. elongata cercariae in the second intermediate host by utilizing the common cockle Cerastoderma edule. Under 2 scenarios (free-stream velocity of 0 and 6 cm s(-1)) more than 90% of the experimental population of cockles (90 individuals per...

Parasitism by Paratanaisia bragai (Digenea, Eucotylidae) in commom waxbill (Estrilda astrild) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Tavela,A.O.; Carretta Junior,M.; Oliveira,A.R.; Carneiro,F.T.; Silva,V.H.D.; Braga,F.R.; Peixoto,J.V.; Carvalho,G.D.; Araújo,J.V.; Paula,T.A.R..
