Catálogo de peces cubanos OceanDocs
Duarte-Bello, Pedro Pablo.
Las otras obras que han servido de base son: "Fishes of North and Middle America", Jordan & Evermann, 1896-1900, abreviado en el texto JEC "Check List of Fishes and Fish like Vertebrates of North and Middle America", Jordan, Evermann & Clark, 1928, abreviado JEC; y los dos vo lumenes publicados de "Fishes of the Western North Atlantic", Partes I y 11, Bigelow & Schroeder, 1948 y 1953, abreviado BS. En conjunto encierran todos log nombres empleados para desig- nar a los peces de nuestras aguas, así como...

Descripción de diferentes piezas de historia natural las mas del ramo marítimo, representadas en setenta y cinco láminas. OceanDocs
Parra, A..

Aquatic macrophytes are important components of aquatic ecosystems, but these plants have become a problem due to their occurrence in different regions. Some studies aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of herbicides to control these macrophytes; however, few studies report the possible ecotoxicological effects. The objective of this study was to estimate the acute toxicity (LC (I)50;96h) and assess water quality variables for glyphosate in the Rodeo® formulation, Aterbane® BR surfactant and mixtures of glyphosate + 0.5% and 1.0% of surfactant, for the guaru fish (Phallocerus caudimaculatus). The guaru was exposed to increasing concentrations of glyphosate and a mixture of glyphosate + 0.5 and 1.0% of surfactant. The mixture of glyphosate...

Efficacy of clove oil as anesthetic in handling and transportation of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Actinopterygii: Cichlidae) juveniles Rev. Bras. Zool.
Simões,Larissa N.; Lombardi,Danielle C.; Gomide,Andrea T. M.; Gomes,Levy C..
This work evaluated the efficiency of clove oil as anaesthetic in handling and transportation of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). In the first experiment, safety concentrations of clove oil were assessed by measuring induction times to anaesthesia. The second experiment evaluated exposure times to anaesthetic. Clove oil efficiency during transportation was evaluated in a 24 h experiment using three concentrations of the anaesthetic (0, 9, and 18 mg.L-1). The most appropriate clove oil concentration to induce surgical anaesthesia was 90 mg.L-1. To biometry or other brief handling, the recommended concentration is 50-60 mg.L-1 as it provides fast recovery. Maximum anaesthesia time should be 10 min. The mortality rate of fish transported...

Abstract: The use and validation of fish health monitoring tools have become increasingly evident due to aquaculture expansion. This study investigated the hematology and blood morphometrics of Piaractus mesopotamicus, Brycon orbignyanus, Oreochromis niloticus and Rhamdia quelen. The fish were kept for 30 days in 300-liter aquariums, after which they were anesthetized with benzocaine and blood was collected from caudal vessels. In comparison to other species, B. orbignyanus presented the highest hematocrit (Ht), RBC averages and Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) with a particular range of data. B. orbignyanus presented lower Ht, Hb, RBC averages and values, and Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration (MCHC). Oreochromis niloticus presented lower Ht, Hb, RBC...

Hormone-induced spawning of cultured tropical finfishes. ArchiMer
Marte, C.
Commercially important tropical freshwater and marine finfishes are commonly spawned with pituitary homogenate, human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) and semi-purified fish gonadotropins. These preparations are often administered in two doses, a lower priming dose followed a few hours later by a higher resolving dose. Interval between the first and second injections may vary from 3-24 hours depending on the species. Variable doses are used even for the same species and may be due to variable potencies of the gonadotropin preparations.

Souza,Valéria Nogueira de; Martins,Maurício Laterça; Moraes,Flávio Ruas de; Kronka,Sérgio do Nascimento.
Tropical fishes like Leporinus macrocephalus Garavello & Britski, 1988 ("piauçu") and the hybrid "tambacu" (Piaractus mesopotamicus Holmberg, 1887 "pacu" male x Colossoma macropomum Cuvier, 1818 "tambaqui" female) were experimentally infected with four inocula of trophonts of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis Fouquet, 1876 (Protozoa, Ciliophora) and the infection level was evaluated. Each one of twelve experimental units consisted of a tank with 200 liters of water and two specimens of each kind of fish. The following treatments were designed to each tank, in triplicate: 8, 16,32 and 64 trophonts. After 8 days of exposure the fishes were killed and the number of trophonts was counted at a stereoscopic microscope. This assay showed to be feasible at...

Optimum dietary crude protein requirement for juvenile cachama Piaractus brachypomus Ciência Rural
Vásquez-Torres,Wálter; Pereira-Filho,Manoel; Arias-Castellanos,Jose Alfredo.
A growth experiment was conducted to determine the optimal dietary protein requirement for juvenile cachama, Piaractus brachypomus. Six semi-purified isoenergetic experimental diets using casein and gelatin as protein sources were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (16, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36%). Fish initially averaging 15.52±0.33g (mean±SD) were randomly distributed into the tanks (500L) as groups of 20 fish and fed to apparent satiation twice daily for 60 days. The results showed that feed consumption, feed conversion ratio, fish weight gain, specific growth rate, protein efficiency ratio and protein productive value were affected by dietary protein level (P<0.05) . No significant differences were observed in proximal composition of carcass...

Population structure and reproduction of Deuterodon langei travassos, 1957 (Teleostei, Characidae) in a neotropical stream basin from the Atlantic Forest, Southern Brazil BABT
Vitule,Jean Ricardo Simões; Braga,Marcelo Rennó; Aranha,José Marcelo Rocha.
Aspects of the biology of D. langei were studied at different sites along a longitudinal gradient formed by the Ribeirão stream basin, a Neotropical stream of the Atlantic Forest, southern Brazil. Differences were observed in population structure and reproduction along the longitudinal gradient and during the study period. Juvenile fishes occurred in high abundance, mainly in the downstream site after the rainy months. Adults occurred mainly in the intermediate and upstream sites. During their life cycle, adults optimise their reproductive strategy by concentrating the reproductive period with total spawn in a short time interval before summer rains dragged the juvenile, larval forms and/or eggs downstream. The downstream site was characterized by a wide...

Production of live prey for marine fish larvae ArchiMer
Kraul, S.
Tropical marine fish larvae vary in their requirements for live planktonic food. Selection of live prey species for culture depends on larval size and larval tolerance of water quality. This report describes some of the cultured prey species, and their uses and limits as effective food for fish larvae. Methods are presented for the culture of phytoplankton, rotifers, copepods, and other live feeds.

Productive performance of tambaqui colossoma macropomum in cages in northeast of Brazil. Repositório Alice
SILVA, C. A. da..
The brazilian native, tropical fish tambaqui Colossoma macropomum is the second largest scaled fish in the Amazon River basin. In Brazil, the tambaqui is rearing on different systems and environments and some of them have shown substantial growth performance. Pond production has a higher technological level, while production in cages is promising, it lacks more studies testing stocking densities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth of tambaqui in cages at different stocking densities in a lake supplied by with rainwater.
