In Brazil, an estimated 11.5 million hectares are used for integrated systems, as crop-livestock (ICL), crop-forestry (ICF), livestock-forestry (ILF), or crop-livestockforestry (ICLF). Even though the inclusion of trees in crop-livestock systems has been done for many years, a systematic evaluation of the effects of this association is still to be made. Therefore, we evaluated the effect of tree density on the productive performance of Nellore heifers in ICLF in the Brazilian Cerrado compared with conditions where no trees are included. |

Integrated crop-livestock-forestry (ICLF) systems are increasingly considered for a diversified agricultural production in Brazil. In this study we analysed the forage yield [kg DM ha?1], of Brachiaria brizantha BRS cv. Piat?a for ICLF demonstration plots at the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation - EMBRAPA, located in Campo Grande-MS, Brazil. The analysed plots with four replicates corresponded to three production systems: Two integrated crop-livestock-forestry systems (ICLF1 and ICLF2) and an integrated crop-livestock system (ICL). The trees (Eucalyptus urograndis) in the ICLF systems were planted in single rows with 2m between tress and 14 or 22m between rows, resulting in 357 trees ha?1 (ICLF1) and 277 trees ha?1 (ICLF2), respectively. The crop... |

This paper aims to discuss the scientific progress obtained in the past ten years in genetics and plant breeding, soil fertility and plant nutrition and the importance of target sward conditions for planning, controlling and recommending management grazing of tropical grasses. In addition, progress in crop-livestock integration systems and management alternatives for mitigation of greenhouse gas emission by beef cattle production systems, two very important areas related to sustainable production systems, will also be discussed. |

This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition and fatty acid (FA) profile of chopped forage and silage of BRS Capiaçu elephant grass at four regrowth ages: 50, 70, 90 and 110 days. A randomized block design with five replications was used. The ensiling was carried out manually in experimental silos without wilting using no additives or bacterial inoculants. The results were analyzed using mixed models (P < 0.05). The model included treatment (regrowth age) as a fixed effect and block as a random effect. Linear and quadratic effects of the treatments were analyzed using orthogonal contrasts. There were linear increases in the dry matter (DM, g kg-1) and lignin (g kg-1 DM) contents and linear reductions in the in vitro DM digestibility (g kg-1) of... |

Abstract: Nitrogen (N) is the main nutrient element that maintains productivity in forages; it is inextricably linked to dry matter increase and plant support capacity. In recent years, high spectral and spatial resolution remote sensors, e.g., the European Space Agency (ESA)?s Sentinel satellite missions, have become freely available for agricultural science, and have proven to be powerful monitoring tools. The use of vegetation indices has been essential for crop monitoring and biomass estimation models. The objective of this work is to test and demonstrate the applicability of different vegetation indices to estimate the biomass productivity, the foliar nitrogen content (FNC), the plant height and the leaf area index (LAI) of several tropical grasslands... |

The Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça is the most productive tropical grass. For this reason, it is used on intensive production systems submitted to high stocking rate and inputs uses, like nitrogen, irrigation, etc. The nitrogen use implies increases on biomass production due to its effects on morphogenetic plants characteristics. The objective of this work was evaluating morphogenetic and structural responses of mombaça grass receiving 100, 200 or 300 kg ha-1 of nitrogen in form of urea. It was used the randomized block design, with three treatments and four replicates (six paddocks of 0.25 ha each treatment), totaling 4.5 ha. |

Aboveground biomass (AGB) data are important for profitable and sustainable pasture management. In this study, we hypothesized that vegetation indexes (VIs) obtained through analysis of moderate spatial resolution satellite data (Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2) and meteorological data can accurately predict the AGB of Brachiaria (syn. Urochloa) pastures in Brazil. We used AGB field data obtained from pastures between 2015 and 2019 in four distinct regions of Brazil to evaluate (i) the relationship between three different VIs?normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), enhanced vegetation index 2 (EVI2) and optimized soil adjusted vegetation index (OSAVI)?and meteorological data with pasture aboveground fresh biomass (AFB), aboveground dry biomass (ADB) and... |

Abstract: This study aimed to assess productivity and nutritional value of the tropical grasses Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piatã, Xaraés, and Marandu, Panicum maximum cv. Mombaça, and B. ruziziensis cv. Kennedy in the interseason of an integrated crop-livestock (ICL) system since alternatives are needed for forage production for animal grazing in Autumn and Winter. The experimental design was a randomized block design in a split-split plot scheme with four replications. The treatments of plots consisted of five grasses, subplots consisted of three cropping systems (monoculture, intercropping with corn and unsuppressed grass, and intercropped with corn and suppressed grass), and sub-subplots consisted of four cutting intervals of grasses (50, 90, 125, and 195... |
