Consumers' attitudes to trust and risk are key issues in food safety research and attention needs to be focused on clearly defining a framework for analysing consumer behaviour in these terms. By creating a platform, or benchmark, it is hoped that more succinct policy programmes may be initiated to better communicate relevant issues to consumers. In order to achieve this, a detailed review of the recent literature surrounding risk, trust and, the relationship between the two must be conducted. This paper aims to collate the literature in the fields of consumer attitudes to trust and risk. It provides an insight into the economic and other modelling procedures available to measure consumers' attitudes to risk and trust in food safety and specifically notes... |

Several researchers, who have observed that traditional cooperatives have difficulties in modern markets, mention a number of behavioral concepts characterizing the members. This study attempts to empirically test these concepts. It is based on a survey among members of a large traditional Swedish cooperative. The members perceive the cooperative to be so large and complex that they have difficulties understanding the operations. Hence, they become dissatisfied and uninvolved, and they mistrust the leadership. Moreover, they do not believe that the cooperative can be remodeled to strengthen member control. The findings support the behavioral explanations presented in prior studies. |

Using recent survey data (n = 1,430) on trust levels in agri-food supplier-buyer relationships in six different European countries, two commodity chains (meat and cereals) and two chain stages (farmer-processor and processor-retailer), main determinants of trust are identified and discussed. The structural equation modelling estimation results indicate that trust can be significantly improved by effective communication and by a positive collaboration experience. The existence of personal bonds does not seem to play a direct role in the retailer-processor relationship but is important when dealing with farmers. In both chain stages a positive collaboration experience as well the existence of personal bonds also indirectly enhance trust by promoting... |

In a continuously expanding, globalizing, and industrializing organic market, organic consumers confront increasing complexity in organic product representation, labeling, and information that challenges how they build trust in organic products. We present a conceptual framework to analyze how consumers might build and practice trust in the organic agrifood chain. We asked specifically about the role of multicriteria assessment tools (MCATs) for trust building. We identified three consumer trust types: uninformed trust in labels (type 1); informed trust in extensive information, control, and certification (type 2); and informed and engaged trust in forms of close farmer–consumer relationships (type 3). Three concepts of... |

Collective action aims at the joint management of common pool resources. Agrobiodiversity at the community level is conceptualized as a collective resource requiring the management of varieties, species and their interrelations within a farming-system. In the rice dominated agriculture in the uplands of Kerala, India, few community groups continue maintaining and thus conserving their high diversity in landraces. Faced with the challenges of devastating prices for rice, their traditional system of collective action to exchange seed material and knowledge is endangered. A new institutional mechanism to manage biodiversity is the People’s Biodiversity Register, a mandatory documentation procedure to enable cost and benefit sharing under the Convention on... |

Food markets in affluent countries tend to be characterized by increasing complexity under several regards such as the organization of the productive chains, the process that leads to the formation of consumer’s preferences, the information/communication task and the building of trust among stakeholders. In particular, consumers are increasingly concerned about many credence attributes such as food safety, environmental concerns, the fairness of trade conditions, product origin and so forth. The paper focus on short chains and consumers’ buying groups (CBGs) seen as strategies to overcome the emerging difficulties that consumers face in collecting and processing information on credence attributes. The results of a field survey, based on e-mail interviews... |

Transactions among agribusiness agents are not exclusively carried out on the market, being also governed by alternative types of institutional arrangements, some of which determined upon contractual agreement. In the fertilizers sector, the companies intensified the offer of input packages to farmers, more specifically to soybean producers, object of this article. In order to acquire the fertilizers, these producers may choose to use their own financial resources, to obtain resources through financing with third parties, or they may recur to the said packages, which include soybean and financial resources in addition to the fertilizers, referred by the soybean producers to as “exchange”, since they acquire fertilizer paying with soybean for future... |

Indonesia’s potato industry is undergoing a rapid transformation, presenting producers with new and profitable opportunities to participate in sales to the modern channels. However, few farmers are involved in the new channels. This study offers an analysis of three groups of potato farmers’ perceptions of trust in their buyers. The aim is to understand the many different ways producers can enter modern chains and how different channels suit the individual characteristics of different producers. We surveyed 50 farmer field schools (FFS) producers, 60 Indofood suppliers, and 192 general potato farmers (GPF) in the largest potato producing area in Indonesia, West Java. Using MANOVA and linear regression methods, the study reveals that flexibility and... |

The role of trust in eight selected agri-food chains in four EU countries is explored. The empirical analysis is based on a qualitative assessment of 28 expert interviews conducted in summer/autumn 2005. The findings suggest that trust is more pronounced among SMEs which are characterised by the existence of personal relationships between business partners. However, as is clear for pork breeders, if a source of distrust exists, trust may not fully develop. Also, if the general economic situation is difficult, the development of trust may be hampered, because all chain participants are struggling to command a share of a diminishing margin within the chain. Finally, if economic power is distributed unevenly, as is the case in Germany, Ireland, Spain and... |

Concern about humanitarian crises in southern Africa, especially in light of the surge in world food prices since 2007, has been accompanied by calls for direct government action in food markets. This paper reviews how Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique handled private food markets during the food crises of 2001/02, 2002/03, and 2005/06, which may provide important lessons for the management of future crises. Lack of trust between government and traders can lead to behavior that undermines the interests of each and harms consumers and farmers; Malawi and Zambia have persistently fallen into this trap while Mozambique has partially avoided it. Empirical policy analysis can make an important contribution to resolution only within a consultative process involving... |

In this paper a small and medium size firm’s network governance structure and social mechanisms of coordination were studied in the light of the model proposed by Jones et al. (1997). The governance is considered a capable tool to regulate any instability originating from divergences, trying to keep the harmony and to strengthen the trust ties within the inter-organizational networks. A case study data analysis was carried out. In so doing, the associated members and the network’s manager were interviewed. The dynamics of the network reveals some practices and elements linked with social control mechanisms such as actor’s reputation, entrant members restrict access, macro-culture and the collective sanctions over individual members. By the interpretive... |
