High-resolution sedimentological and micropaleontological studies of several deep-sea cores retrieved from the levees of the Celtic and Armorican turbidite systems (Bay of Biscay - North Atlantic Ocean) allow the detection of the major oscillations of the British-Irish Ice Sheet (BIIS) and 'Fleuve Manche' palaeoriver discharges over the last 30,000 years, which were mainly triggered by climate changes. Between 30 and 20 cal ka, the turbiditic activity on the Celtic-Annorican margin was weak, contrasting with previous stratigraphic models which predicted a substantial increase of sediment supply during low sea-level stands. This low turbidite deposit frequency was most likely the result of a weak activity of the 'Fleuve Manche' palaeoriver and/or of a... |

The systematics, paleoenvironmental implications, and diversity of Cenozoic trace fossils from the Fuegian Andes are studied. The relatively complete Paleocene-Miocene stratigraphic column includes ichnoassemblages of the Cruziana (Leticia Formation, late Middle Eocene), Zoophycos and Nereites (Early Eocene-Early Miocene turbidite systems) ichnofacies. The last two ichnoasemblages contain the only known deep marine Cenozoic trace fossils in Argentina. The late Middle Eocene Leticia Formation represents a transgressive-regressive cycle and bears the ichnogenera Curvolithus, Diplocraterion, Gyrochorte, Rosselia, Patagonichnus, Asterosoma, Palaeophycus, Paradictyodora, Planolites, Rhizocorallium, Schaubcylindrichnus, Taenidium, and Teichichnus. Ichnogenera of... |

Sandy lobe deposits on submarine fans are sensitive recorders of the types of sediment gravity flows supplied to a basin and are economically important as hydrocarbon reservoirs. This study investigates the causes of variability in 20 lobes in small late Pleistocene submarine fans off East Corsica. These lobes were imaged using ultra-high resolution boomer seismic profiles (< 1 m vertical resolution) and sediment type was ground truthed using piston cores published in previous studies. Repeated crossings of the same depositional bodies were used to measure spatial changes in their dimensions and architecture. Most lobes increase abruptly down-slope to a peak thickness of 8 to 42 m, beyond which they show a progressive, typically more gradual, decrease... |

The Danube Deep-Sea Fan (NW Black Sea) is one of the most developed deep-sea sediment depositional systems in Europe. Although the morphology and the architecture have been widely described in the past years, little is known about the stratigraphy of this depositional system. For the late Quaternary, this results from the lack of significant stratigraphic markers, the scarcity of radiocarbon ages and the difficulty in constraining reservoir ages. Recent robust quantification of reservoir ages has allowed the construction of a new stratigraphic framework for the Black Sea from the end of the last glacial period to the Holocene, thus giving the opportunity to correlate sedimentological and geochemical features previously described on the NW Black Sea margin... |

In the Ionian Sea, the subduction of the Nubia plate underneath the Eurasia plate leads to an important sediment remobilization on the Calabrian Arc and the Mediterranean Ridge. These events are often associated with earthquakes and tsunamis. In this study, we analyze gravity-driven deposits in order to establish their recurrence time on the Calabrian Arc and the western Mediterranean Ridge. Four gravity cores collected on ridges and slope basins of accretionary prisms record turbidites, megaturbidites, slumping and micro-faults over the last 330,000 years. These turbidites were dated by correlation with a hemipelagic core with a multi-proxy approach: radiometric dating, 18O, b* colour curve, sapropels and tephrochronology. The origin of the gravity-driven... |

The Fairway Basin is an intracratonic deep-water basin inherited from cretaceous rifting, perched between the Lord Howe Rise and the New Caledonia Basin in the Southwest Pacific. Its originality lies in its atypical present-day physiography and its carbonate-dominated sedimentary setting since the Miocene. Although very limited well controls are available, its overall structure, seismic stratigraphy and architecture are relatively well known. However, little is known on the detailed sedimentary processes controlling its recent infill. Its remote location from any major clastic sediment sources provides a great setting to study deep-water carbonate sedimentary processes. In this paper, we propose a detailed analysis of surface morphologies based on existing... |

Geochemical data (total organic carbon-TOC content, δ13Corg, C:N, Rock-Eval analyses) were obtained on 150 core tops from the Angola basin, with a special focus on the Congo deep sea fan. Combined with the previously published data, the resulting dataset (322 stations) shows a good spatial and bathymetric representativeness. TOC content and δ13Corg maps of the Angola basin were generated using this enhanced dataset. The main difference in our map with previously published ones is the high terrestrial organic matter content observed downslope along the active turbidite channel of the Congo deep sea fan till the distal lobe complex near 5,000 m of water-depth. Interpretation of downslope trends in TOC content and organic matter composition indicates that... |

Palynological interpretations of both spores and acritarchs from the Devonian Tiffrit Formation located in Saida (North-Western Algeria) support identical conclusions. Species of spores and acritarches that appear in the upper layers of the younger reference unit, named Boukourdene (BK1), are compatible with a Pragian-Emsian age, based especially on the presence of the miospores Dibolisporites wetteldorfensis, Dictyotriletes emsiensis, D. subgranifer, Verrucosisporites polygonalis, and the acritarchs Evittia crucistellata, E. spicifera, Fimbriaglomerella aulerca, Florisphaeridium toyetae, and Veryhachium aff. V. vandenbergheni. On the basis of occurrences of microconglomeratic levels with elements of Silurian phtanites found along the sedimentary units of... |

Emplacement of post-glacial turbidites is commonly controlled by rapid changes in sea level or by seismicity. On the continental rise of the Gulf of Lions (Western Mediterranean), an aseismic area, we identified turbiditic beds deposited during the rising stage and highstand of sea level. Swath bathymetry, sediment cores, in situ Cone Penetrating Tests (CPTU), heavy mineral associations and radiocarbon dating determined the source, composition, distribution and age of the turbiditic beds. Turbidites are composed of homogeneous to positively graded silts to medium sand with quartz (up to 90%), shell debris and shelfal benthic faunas. Their distribution on the sea floor is very patchy and controlled by abundant inherited erosional bedforms. Their source is... |

The present study focused on turbidite sedimentation in the Cilaos turbidite system, a volcaniclastic deep-sea fan recently recognized offshore La Réunion Island. A set of piston cores was collected in order to establish the stratigraphy of this fan and to examine the processes controlling the turbidite sedimentation off the Cilaos cirque (Piton des Neiges volcanic massif) over the last climatic cycle. Two main phases of turbidite activity were identified, during the ca 140–127 ka and 30–0 ka periods, coinciding with the two last glacial–interglacial transitions (i.e., Terminations II and I). In addition to changes in climate and eustatic sea-level, these periods coincide with a low effusive volcanic activity of the Piton des Neiges volcano. The high... |

The timing, routing and processes of sediment transfer from the continents to the oceans at millennial time-scale are still largely unknown. The potential of turbidite systems (dominantly deposited during sea-level lowstands) to record global or regional environmental fluctuations is usually under-exploited because of the difficulty to obtain robust chronostratigraphic constraints in turbiditic deposits, and therefore to tie changes in sedimentary processes to environmental fluctuations. We were able to obtain a millennial-scale chronostratigraphy based on oxygen isotopes of the scarce foraminifera preserved in turbiditic deposits of the Rhone Turbidite System within the Western Mediterranean. Our results show that 1) objective criteria can be defined for... |
