A- and B-modes ultrasonographic changes in the thickness of various structures of the eyeball in male and female English Cocker Spaniel dogs with and without nondiabetic cataracts were evaluated. Sixteen dogs with cataracts (32 eyes) and seven normal dogs (14 eyes) older than eight years were selected. A- and B-modes ultrasonography was performed with a 10MHz transducer. Data was statistically evaluated by one way ANOVA. Mean and standard deviations of various ocular structures for dogs with and without cataracts were, respectively, anterior chamber: 3.041±0.828mm, 3.373±1.040mm; lens: 6.817±1.117mm, 7.062±0.477mm; vitreous: 10.056±0.754mm, 9.523±0.705mm; and axial length: 19.909±1.103mm, 19.958±1.050mm. Ocular measurements between right and left eyes,... |

Abstract: In goats, it has been demonstrated that cervical mucus evaluation is able to predict the time of ovulation after estrous hormonal synchronization, which is efficient in determining the ideal time of Artificial Insemination (Fonseca et al., 2017. Reprod Biol; 17:363-369). However, in sheep, this parameter is not established in the literature. The study was conducted in Coronel Pacheco (latitude 21?33 'S and longitude 43?16' W), MG, Brazil. These data are different from that reported in goats, i.e., the standardization of mucus score 3 or 4 at the time of ovulation. It may be concluded that the use of cervical mucus is alone not an efficient parameter to detect the time of ovulation in sheep. [O muco cervical não é eficiente em predizer o momento... |

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the Color Doppler ultrasound as a substitute for laparoscopy for couting of corpora lutea (CL) in superovulated sheep. Twenty-five nulliparous Santa Ines ewes (11.9 ± 1.1 months old, BCS: 2.8 ± 0.3) were superovulated using the Day 0 protocol concept. For previous wave synchonization, intravaginal progestagen sponges (Progespon®, Zoetis, Campinas-SP, Brazil) were kept for 6 days and on Day 5, 300 IU eCG (Novormon®, Schering Plough, São Paulo, Brazil) and 0.24mg cloprostenol (Estron®, Tecnopec, Sao Paulo, Brazil) were given intramuscularly (IM). Thirty-six hours after sponge removal, 25 µg licerelin was administered IM. The superovulation started 80 hours after sponge removal by the use of 200 mg of FSH/ per ewe... |

A ultrassonografia convencional e... |

ABSTRACT: The carpus is a complex articulation, which is often involved in injuries in equine athletes. The objective of this study was to suggest a didactic approach for ultrasonography training for the examination of the carpal joint in horses. Ultrasonograhy examination was performed in a healthy 14-year-old horse. The images were compared with those of a dissected anatomic specimen of the carpal region of a senior horse and with those reported in the literature. Identifiable structures were as follows: (dorsal) tendon of the muscle extensor carpi radialis, tendon of the muscle extensor carpi obliquus, tendon of the muscle commom digital extensor, dorsal synovial outpouchings, joint capsule and fat cushion, (lateral) tendon of the muscle lateral digital... |

Abstracts: The diagnosis of early pregnancy increases reproductive efficiency because non-pregnant females can be subjected for a promptly mating, concentrating births and improving the farm management. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness in the diagnosis of early pregnancy on the 12nd and 17th day after sheep mating. The study was carried out in a meat sheep flock located at Cachoeiras de Macacu city, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 58 crossbred (Dorper x Santa Inês) ewes had their estrus synchronized by two doses of 0.12 mg cloprostenol (Estron®, Agener Union Animal Health, São Paulo, Brazil) seven days apart. Estrus behavior was detected after 36 hours of the second dose and ewes were mated by healthy rams. At the 12th... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the production performance and carcass traits of feedlot steers fed a high-energy diet supplemented with doses of an enzyme complex (0, 2.5, 5.0, and, 7.5 g animal−1 day−1). Thirty-two ½ Angus ½ Nellore crossbred steers at an average age of 12 months and an average initial weight of 422 kg, were kept in a feedlot for 77 days. The roughage-free diet was composed of a mixture of whole corn grain and a protein-mineral-vitamin mix at a constant ratio of 85:15, on a dry matter basis. A completely randomized block design was adopted, consisting of four treatments and four replicates, in which each replicate was represented by a stall with two animals. Each gram of product added to the diet led to a decrease of... |

This study aimed to determine the elastic properties of human triceps brachii (TB) tendon. The elongation of the TB tendon was directly measured in 9 healthy males using ultrasonography during ramp isometric elbow-extension up to the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). The slope of the regression line for the relationship between the estimated muscle force and the angular rotation-corrected tendon elongation above 50%MVC was defined as stiffness. The stiffness of the TB tendon, 83±22 N/mm, was comparable with that of the gastrocnemius tendon reported previously. The relationship between the stiffness and the tendon length (TL) showed a negatively significant correlation, suggesting that the stiffness of TB tendon is influenced by its dimensions. |

This study assessed in dairy goats the effect of hormonal induction treatments varying only 12 h in progestogen device permanence on estrus synchrony and fertility. In both Experiments, goats received 60 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) intravaginal devices for 6 (G6) or 6.5 d (G6.5), and 200 IU of eCG i.m. and 30 ?g of d?cloprostenol were i.m. applied at 24 h or 36 h before device removal, respectively. In Experiment 1 (n = 24), data related to sexual behavior and ovarian ultrasonography were recorded and, in Experiment 2, (n = 83) fertility was assessed after Flexible Time Artificial Insemination (FxTAI). In conclusion, increasing the time of intravaginal device permanence from 6 to 6.5 d resulted in greater estrus synchrony, but lower fertility... |

The aim of this study was to establish the morphologic and endocrine characteristics of luteal dynamics in goats. It was used Toggenburg female goats that showed natural estrus in a 48-hour interval. After estrus, ultrasonographic evaluations of the ovaries were daily performed during 21 days using a portable device (5MHz probe). Blood sample was collected for plasma progresterone (P4) determination. Corpora lutea were detected for the first time on day 5 and progressively increased in size until D9 (1.26 ± 0.08 cm2), with no variation on subsequent days. In females with one ovulation, the first visualization of the corpora lutea was earlier than in those with multiple ovulation (4.54 ± 0.18 vs 5.74 ± 0.25 days). At the moment of the first visualization,... |
