An ultrasound and histomorphological analysis of experimental liver cirrhosis in rats BJMBR
Dias,J.V.; Paredes,B.D.; Mesquita,L.F.Q.; Carvalho,A.B.; Kozlowski,E.O.; Lessa,A.S.; Takiya,C.M.; Resende,C.M.C.; Coelho,H.S.M.; Campos-de-Carvalho,A.C.; Rezende,G.F.M.; Goldenberg,R.C.S..
We investigated whether liver injury by dual exposure to ethanol and carbon tetrachloride (EtOH + CCl4) for 15 weeks would persist after hepatotoxic agents were removed (EtOH + CCl4/8wR). After 15 weeks of hepatic injury with ethanol (5.5%, m/v) and carbon tetrachloride (0.05, mL/kg, ip), 5 of 11 female Wistar rats were sacrificed. The other 6 rats were maintained for an additional 8 weeks without hepatotoxic agents. Ultrasonography showed increased liver echogenicity and dilation of portal vein caliber in both groups (EtOH + CCl4: 0.22 ± 0.01 cm, P < 0.001; EtOH + CCl4/8wR: 0.21 ± 0.02 cm, P < 0.01) vs control (0.16 ± 0.02 cm). Histopathology showed regenerative nodules in both experimental groups. Histomorphometry revealed increased fibrosis...

Assessment of ultrasonographic and endoscopic changes in dogs with gastrointestinale disorders Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Malancus,R.N.; Malancus,C.M. Tofan.
ABSTRACT The study has been conducted over a period of 4 years, on a total number of 133 dogs, all of those expressing gastrointestinal disorders. Ultrasound and endoscopic examinations were performed in all dogs in order to assess any significant correlations between ultrasonographic and endoscopic findings. The results confirm a significant correlation between the presence of diarrhoea and increased thickness of the large bowel wall, with P<0.5. Another extremely significant correlation we observed is the one between increased thickness of large bowel wall and loss of layering at this level, with P<0.5. Upper GI endoscopy revealed that dilated lacteals in the duodenum are significantly associated with the presence of diarrhoea, P<0.5 and, more...

Raikos,Athanasios; Paraskevas,George K; Triaridis,Stefanos; Kordali,Panagiota; Psillas,George; Brand-Saberi,Beate.
Anatomical variations of the sternocleidomastoid muscle are rare and concern its origin, insertion, and the number of heads. We report on a rare bilateral variant of the sternocleidomastoid muscle with aberrant and supernumerary muscular heads, observed in a cadaveric subject. On the right side of the neck, a typical sternomastoid head of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, and three aberrant clavicular heads of variable thickness, origin, and termination were noticed. On the left side, two sternomastoid heads were present; the medial one was of typical pattern, while the lateral was supernumerary. The cleidomastoid portion of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle was fused with the double sternomastoid segment. A strap-like muscle originating from the middle...

Myocardial contrast echocardiography has been used for assessing myocardial perfusion. Some concerns regarding its safety still remain, mainly regarding the induction of microvascular alterations. We sought to determine the bioeffects of microbubbles and real-time myocardial contrast echocardiography (RTMCE) in a closed-chest canine model. Eighteen mongrel dogs were randomly assigned to two groups. Nine were submitted to continuous intravenous infusion of perfluorocarbon-exposed sonicated dextrose albumin (PESDA) plus continuous imaging using power pulse inversion RTMCE for 180 min, associated with manually deflagrated high-mechanical index impulses. The control group consisted of 3 dogs submitted to continuous imaging using RTMCE without PESDA, 3 dogs...

Wee,Lai K.; Chai,Hum Y.; Samsury,Sharul R. Bin; Mujamil,Naizaithull F. Binti; Supriyanto,Eko.
Current two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonic marker measurements are inherent with intra- and inter-observer variability limitations. The objective of this paper is to investigate the performance of conventional 2D ultrasonic marker measurements and proposed programmable interactive three-dimensional (3D) marker evaluation. This is essentially important to analyze that the measurement on 3D volumetric measurement possesses higher impact and reproducibility vis-à-vis 2D measurement. Twenty three cases of prenatal ultrasound examination were obtained from collaborating hospital after Ethical Committee's approval. The measured 2D ultrasonic marker is Nuchal Translucency or commonly abbreviated as NT. Descriptive analysis of both 2D and 3D ultrasound measurement...

Delay in gallbladder emptying during the perimenopausal period BJMBR
Petroianu,A.; Oliveira,L.C.; Vieira,M.I..
A pilot study has ascribed an important role in gallbladder motility and emptying to the perimenopausal period. To assess the effect of this period on gallbladder emptying and cholelithogenesis, 25 women in the perimenopausal period without gallbladder disease were submitted to cholangiography and two ultrasound exams. The time for gallbladder emptying and the presence of cholelithiasis were assessed. All patients presented a delay in gallbladder emptying with no relationship to the pre- or postmenopausal period. This finding was not related to lithogenesis. Gallbladder emptying time is longer during the perimenopausal period.

Effect of ultrasound on the functional and structural properties of hydrolysates of different bovine collagens Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
VIDAL,Alessandra Roseline; CANSIAN,Rogério Luis; MELLO,Renius de Oliveira; KUBOTA,Ernesto Hashime; DEMIATE,Ivo Mottin; ZIELINSKI,Acácio Antonio Ferreira; DORNELLES,Rosa Cristina Prestes.
Abstract The ultrasound effect on functional and structural properties of hydrolysates of different bovine collagens (fibers, gelatines and hydrolysates) was evaluated. The enzymatically hydrolyzed samples (enzyme Alcalase®) with previous or simultaneous ultrasound treatment presented higher number of bands with shorter wavelengths (mid-FTIR). The ultrasound provided the samples with a higher hydrolysis degree and favored the antimicrobial activity, evidencing the advantages of its use in the process. Results revealed that higher hydrolysis degree does not always result in higher antioxidant activity. The use of ultrasound in the hydrolysis of these samples was seen to be effective, providing them with higher functionality and structural disruption.
