Knowledge of the varying drainage patterns of superficial veins of head & neck, in particular, jugular veins are not only important for anatomists but also for the surgeons operating at this level and to clinicians in general. The variations are important for interventional radiologists too who perform transjugular procedures, such as port implantations and the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt or selective venous samplings. Results of recent studies report that the superficial veins, especially the external jugular vein (EJV), is been increasingly utilized for cannulation to conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. We report a very unusual presentation of external jugular vein on left side of an embalmed male cadáver.... |

The azygos venous system is highly variable in terms of its origin, course, communications, tributaries and termination of the associated veins: this study aimed to classify these anatomical variations. Thirty Thiel-embalmed cadavers aged 4898 years (18 female, 12 male) were examined. The vertebral level of termination and diameter of the azygos, hemiazygos, accessory hemiazygos and the left superior intercostal veins were determined, as well as the termination level of the right superior intercostal vein. The azygos system was classified into 3 types; primitive (type 1), transitional (type 2) and unicolumnar (type 3). Type 2 was further divided into 5 subgroups (A to E) according to the number of retroaortic communications. Type one was observed in 3 %... |

The arterial supply to the rotator cuff muscles is generally provided by the subscapular, circumflex scapular, posterior circumflex humeral and suprascapular arteries. This study involved the bilateral dissection of the scapulohumeral region of 31 adult and 19 fetal cadaveric specimens. The subscapularis muscle was supplied by the subscapular, suprascapular and circumflex scapular arteries. The supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles were supplied by the suprascapular artery. The infraspinatus and teres minor muscles were found to be supplied by the circumflex scapular artery. In addition to the branches of these parent arteries, the rotator cuff muscles were found to be supplied by the dorsal scapular, lateral thoracic, thoracodorsal and posterior... |

The subclavian-axillary arterial tree is responsible for the arterial supply to the rotator cuff muscles as well as other shoulder muscles. This study comprised the bilateral dissection of the shoulder and upper arm region in thirty-one adult and nineteen fetal cadaveric specimens. The variable origins and branching patterns of the axillary, subscapular, circumflex scapular, thoracodorsal, posterior circumflex humeral and suprascapular arteries identified in this study corroborated the findings of previous studies. In addition, unique variations that are unreported in the literature were also observed. The precise anatomy of the arterial distribution to the rotator cuff muscles is important to the surgeon and radiologist. It will aid proper interpretation... |

At a time when there is a great deal of talk of the degradation of the coastal environment and of biodiversity being threatened, we felt it would be of interest to sample the macrofauna of five sites at five metres depth in well sorted fine sand at a thirty-year interval (1966-1996), using the same techniques. Four seasonal samplings provided comparative data at each site on the species richness (S), density (N) and biomass (B). The S values are comparable and even on the increase at two stations. Nevertheless, we observed a general tendency towards decline in the relative abundance of the crustacean group. From the quantitative point of view (N and B), the changes observed would appear to result from the impact of clearly identifiable human pressure, such... |

Advanced imaging techniques have resulted in increasing use of minimally invasive approaches for nephron sparing surgeries of kidney. Need for precise knowledge of normal and variant anatomy of vascular pedicle of kidney is thus justified. Ample literature is available on the variations in the intrarenal vascular pattern of the kidney, which are seen frequently. But the variation in arrangement of structures at the renal hilum has not gained much interest up till now. One hundred (51 right and 49 left) embalmed kidneys were utilized for the present study. Careful dissection of renal hilar structures was carried out to observe antero-posterior relationship of structures at the hilum of the kidney. In majority (73%), the arrangement was not according to the... |

The plantar arterial arch provides the dominant vascular supply to the digits of the foot, with variability in length, shape, and dominant blood supply from the contributing arteries. According to the standard definition, the plantar arterial arch is formed from the continuation of the lateral plantar artery and the anastomoses between the deep branch of dorsalis pedis artery. In this study, 40 adult feet were dissected and the plantar arch with variations in shape and arterial supply was observed. The standard description of the plantar arch was observed in 55% of the specimens with variations present in 45%. Variations in terms of shape were classified into three types: Type A (10%): plantar arterial arch formed a sharp irregular curve; type B (60%):... |

Total knee arthroplasty has increased substantially, however anatomical studies of the genicular arteries (GAs) in this region are rare. The aim of this study was to identify the pattern and branching points of GAs and their relationship. In 42 lower limbs, the pattern and branching points of GAs were confirmed. The horizontal line which extends between the most prominent point of the lateral and medial margins of patella was defined as a reference line. The distance of branching point of the GAs from the reference line was measured, and the correlations between these points were analyzed. The superior lateral and medial genicular arteries (SLGA and SMGA) were located at + 38.17 ± 3.10 mm and + 32.68 ± 3.83 mm from the reference line, respectively. The... |

Biogeochemical cycling in the Southern Ocean (SO) plays a key role in the global sea-air CO2 balance and in the ocean anthropogenic carbon inventory (Ito et al., 2010; Khatiwala et al., 2009; Sarmiento et al., 2004). Some previous studies suggest a decreasing trend in the Southern Ocean carbon sink (Le Quere et al., 2007; Lovenduski et al., 2007; Wetzel et al., 2005). We investigate the interannual and decadal variations in sea-air CO2 flux and phytoplankton production in the SO with hindcast simulations by an ocean biogeochemical model. Decreasing trends in sinking POC and primary production are found from 1979 to 2003, concurrent with a decreasing trend in carbon uptake from the atmosphere. Simulations show substantial interannual and decadal variability... |

The celiac trunk is the major source of blood supply to the supracolic abdominal compartment. Usually, it branches into the splenic, common hepatic and left gastric arteries to supply this region. It has however been shown to display ethnic variations in its branching pattern. Knowledge of these variations may be important in surgical and radiological procedures around the head of the pancreas. The aim was to illustrate the commonest variations in the branching pattern of the celiac trunk in a Kenyan population. The study was conducted in the Department of Human Anatomy, University of Nairobi. Were collected one hundred twenty three (123) bodies obtained from dissection cadavers and autopsy cases following ethical approval and consent from next of kin.... |
