Agronomic evaluation of cowpea as a function of weed control with herbicides and different combinations Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Souza,Wando Wilson de Oliveira; Oliveira,Alexandre Bosco de; Dutra,Alek Sandro; Nunes,Renato Leandro Costa; Cavalcante,Robson Assunção.
ABSTRACT Cultivation of the cowpea is important in various regions of Brazil, but competition from weeds is one of the factors which limit productivity. The aim of this study therefore was to evaluate the pre-plant selectivity and efficiency of different herbicides, and combinations of herbicides, in the cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.]. An experiment was carried out in a randomised block design, in lots split over time and with three replications, using a 4 x 7 factorial scheme, where the treatments consisted of: glyphosate, glyphosate + imazethapyr, glyphosate + flumioxazin, glyphosate + imazethapyr + flumioxazin, glyphosate + ready mix (imazethapyr & flumioxazin), and two control treatments (one with no weeding and one with manual weeding). The...

DROUGHT-INDUCED EFFECTS AND RECOVERY OF NITRATE ASSIMILATION AND NODULE ACTIVITY IN COWPEA PLANTS INOCULATED WITH BRADYRHIZOBIUM SPP. UNDER MODERATE NITRATE LEVEL BJM
Silveira,Joaquim Albenísio Gomes da; Costa,Roberto Cezar Lobo da; Oliveira,José Tadeu Abreu.
This study was carried out to establish comparative effects of drought and recovery on the nitrate assimilation and nodule activity related to N2 fixation in cowpea plants [Vigna unguiculata L. (Walp.)] previously inoculated with Bradyrhizobium spp. BR-3256 (CB-756) strain in the presence of 5 mol m-3 NO-3. Twenty-eight-day-old nodulated plants were submitted to water deprivation during 4 consecutive days and afterwards resupplied with nutrient solution during 2 days. The water deprivation caused a rapid increase in the nitrate content in root and a marked reduction in leaf nitrate reductase (NR) activity. In contrast nodule NR activity was slightly increased by water deprivation. Concomitantly, in nodules of water stressed plants, leghemoglobin and...

Effect of thermal processing on total polyphenol content in the grain of cowpea cultivars Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Cavalcante,Rodrigo Barbosa Monteiro; Araújo,Marcos Antônio da Mota; Rocha,Maurisrael de Moura; Silva,Kaesel Jackson Damasceno e; Moreira-Araújo,Regilda Saraiva dos Reis.
ABSTRACT Cowpea grain is noteworthy due to its functional properties, which are probably a result of the synergistic action of its nutrients and bioactive compounds. Since these compounds undergo the effects of thermal processing, the aim of the present study was to verify the influence of cooking on the total polyphenol content of the grain of cowpea cultivars. Samples were obtained from the experimental area of Embrapa Meio-Norte, located at 5°5' S and 42°48' W, at an altitude of 72 metres. Meal (0.5 mesh) resulting from the raw grain being ground in a cyclone rotor mill (Tecnal model TE-651/2-T), and cooked beans (with no maceration, at a bean to water ratio of 1:5 (w/v), cooked in a domestic pressure cooker (2 L) for 780 seconds) were stored in...

Growth and gas exchange in cowpea plants under different managements and saline conditions Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Silva,Weslley Costa; Moura,Joana Gomes de; Oliveira,Alexandre Bosco de; Ferreira,Leonardo Elias; Silva,Tatiana Maria da.
ABSTRACT The cowpea is one of the main crops of economic and social importance in the northeast of Brazil. However, the growing need to increase crop yield has prompted the use of irrigation water with high levels of salts. The aim of this study therefore, was to evaluate the effects of different irrigation depths and rates of liquid biofertilizer on growth and gas exchange in cowpea plants under saline conditions. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, using a scheme of split lots consisting of four irrigation depths with saline water (75, 100, 125 and 150% of crop evapotranspiration - ETc) and sub-lots of four different doses of biofertilizer (0; 5,000; 10,000 and 15,000 L ha-1). At 75 days after sowing (DAS), readings were taken of...
