Applying the Miceli Model to Explain Cooperation in Municipal Solid Waste Management AgEcon
Tiller, Kelly; Jakus, Paul M..
As traditional methods of municipal solid waste management (MSWM) become increasingly expensive due to increased regulation, many local governments are considering cooperation as a waste management strategy. A theoretical model is used to specify a partial observability probability model to analyze the decision Tennessee counties made to form either a single-county solid waste region or a multi-county region. We find that, while economies of scale may be a factor in the consolidation decision, similarities and differences between counties in current individual provision levels of solid waste services, ability to pay for services, and expectations for future solid waste service demands are statistically more important.

Sousa, Ricardo Silva de; Nunes, Luis Alfredo Pinheiro Leal; Lima, Aurenivia Bonifacio de; Melo, Wanderley Jose de; Antunes, Jadson Emanuel Lopes; Araujo, Ademir Sérgio Ferreira de.
Chromium (Cr) accumulation in soil and plants has been reported after successive applications of tannery sludge, which is a matter of concern because Cr can promote environmental contamination and affect the food chain. In this study, we evaluated the growth of and Cr accumulation in maize and cowpea after seven years of consecutive applications of composted tannery sludge (CTS) under field conditions. The experiment consisted of application of CTS at five levels: 0 (control), 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 Mg ha-1 (dry basis). The growth of and Cr accumulation in maize and cowpea were evaluated at 75 and 65 days after plant emergence, respectively. CTS application increased the shoot biomass of maize and cowpea. Accumulation of Cr was similar for both plant species,...

Coffee silverskin and expired coffee powder used as organic fertilizers. Repositório Alice
CARNIER, R.; BERTON, R. S.; COSCIONE, A. R.; PIRES, A. M. M.; CORBO, J. Z. F..
Abstract: The coffee industry produces a wide range of organic wastes, some in large amounts, and most of them do not have a well-defined final disposal. The agricultural use of these wastes can be based on the recycling of nitrogen, but their chemical characterization and evaluation with soil under controlled conditions are mandatory. The aim of this work was to evaluate the use of coffee silverskin and expired coffee grounds as organic fertilizers. The wastes were chemically characterized according to CONAMA?S resolution No. 375 and passed through Brazil?s Agriculture Ministry regulation for organic fertilizers and soil conditioners. A greenhouse experiment with Rhodic Ferralsol soil and maize was performed to obtain the agronomic efficiency index (AEI)...

Cycle de la matière et variabilité environnementale en élevage larvaire de Litopenaeus stylirostris en Nouvelle-Calédonie ArchiMer
Millot, Anne-sophie.
Since 2005, shrimp livestock of Litopenaeus stylirostris in New Caledonia has dealed with production issues. One of them concerns the lack of postlarvae following high mortality rates in hatcheries. This study aims the evolution of the environmental quality status in three rearing from nauplius to postlarvae stage. Among nutrients, total ammonia nitrogen (TAN), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), nitrates and nitrites (NOx) have been quantified. Organic matter was also estimated through dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), urea nitrogen and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Finally, bacteria were followed through bacterial abundance and respiration. The hatchery cycle can be divided in two stages: the first one in which antibiotics were delivered to...

Drying Temperature - Duration Impacts on Moisture, Carbon, and Nitrogen Losses from Broiler Litter CIGR Journal
Shah, Sanjay B..
Drying poultry litter (PL) prior to analysis minimizes nutrient transformations and losses and facilitates sample preparation. Drying also allows comparison among different litters on dry-weight (dw) basis. However, losses of carbon (C) as CO2 and nitrogen (N) as NH3 (NH3) can confound moisture losses. Thus, the apparent moisture content (MC) that does not separately account for C and N losses will be higher than the true MC. Further, use of apparent MC may also result in overestimation of C and N concentrations (dw basis). Broiler litter (BL) MC was determined using FD 50 (flask-dried at 50°C for 24 h), FD 70 (flask-dried at 70°C for 16 h), CT70 (oven-dried at 70°C to constant mass), and CT105 (oven-dried at 105°C to constant mass). Carbon and NH3-N...

EFFECTIVE MICROORGANISMS (EM) AS BIOFEEDERS FOR ANAEROBIC DIGESTION Engenharia na Agricultura
Souza Ferreira, Cecília de Fátima; Gates, Richard Stephen; Batista, Maurílio Duarte; TINOCO, Ilda de Fatima Ferreira.
Soil micro-organisms called Effective Microorganisms (EM) were first cultivated and used in the 1970s. Researches about these cultures have since then demonstrated their effectiveness in improving soil characteristics and as an alternative for accelerating organic matter decomposition in waste treatment systems. The objective of this study was to test whether the addition of EM to substrates incubated in anaerobic digesters would increase the efficiency of waste treatment and biogas production. EM cultures were obtained from bacterial colonies captured within the A-horizon of a Brazilian forest soil. They were left to grow during 15 days on cooked rice contact with the soil; afterwards, the established colonies were separated according to their colors,...

Effects of temperature on the sorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from aqueous solution by Caladium bicolor (Wild Cocoyam) biomass Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Horsfall Jnr,Michael; Spiff,Ayebaemi I..
This report is based on the investigation of the effect of temperature on the removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in aqueous effluent using C. bicolor biomass in a batch sorption process. The result showed that the most suitable sorption temperature was 40ºC with maximum sorption capacities of 49.02 mg/g and 52.63 mg/g for Pb2+ and Cd2+ respectively. Various thermodynamic parameters, such as ΔGº, ΔHº, ΔSº and Ea have been calculated. The data showed that the sorption process is spontaneous and exothermic in nature and that lower solution temperatures favours metal ion removal by the biomass. The findings of this investigation suggest that physical sorption plays a role in controlling the sorption rate. The sticking probability model was...

Isolation and characterization of bacterial strains with a hydrolytic profile with potential use in bioconversion of agroindustial by-products and waste Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Mazzucotelli,Cintia Anabela; Ponce,Alejandra Graciela; Kotlar,Catalina Elena; Moreira,María del Rosario.
There is a trend towards the use of novel technologies nowadays, mainly focused on biological processes, for recycling and the efficient utilization of organic residues that can be metabolized by different microorganisms as a source of energy. In the present study the isolation of bacterial strains from six different agro-industrial by-products and waste was performed with the objective of evaluating their hydrolytic capacities and suitability for use in bioconversion of specific substrates. The 34 isolated strains were screened in specific culture media for the production of various hydrolytic enzymes (lipase, protease, cellulase, and amylase). It was found that 28 strains exhibited proteolytic activity, 18 had lipolytic activity, 13 had caseinolytic...

KÖRNYEZETTERHELÉS ÉS KÖRNYEZETVÉDELEM A MEZŐGAZDASÁGBAN AgEcon
Somogyi, Tamas; Hoffmann, Andras.

Hussenot, Jerome.
The former extensive polyculture systems of marine fish farming, are today replaced mainly by intensive monoculture systems (salmon, shrimp). These systems, multiplied in the same coastal zone, can present a significant environmental impact. To treat and value fish farming effluents, new integrated systems were constructed and tested to different scales. Some examples of land- and seabased systems around the world are presented, in particular the European project of innovation "Genesis" in which several French public and private, national and regional organisations are participants (IFREMER, Regional Centre of Experiment and Aquacultural Applications in Poitou- Charentes, IDEE). Recommendations are supplied to promote the development of the integrated fish...

Methane emission factor of open deposits used to store swine slurry in Southern Brazil PAB
Sardá,Luana Goulart; Higarashi,Martha Mayumi; Nicoloso,Rodrigo da Silveira; Oliveira,Paulo Armando Victória de; Falkoski,Camila; Ribeiro,Stephanie Mayara Siega; Coldebella,Arlei.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to contribute to the establishment of a baseline for the methane emission factor for the management of swine manure, considering the current practice of raw manure storage in two open deposits in parallel, in Southern Brazil. Methane (CH4) emissions were continuously measured in three PVC tanks of 3 m3, during 180 days, in the summer. As the content of volatile solids of pig slurry ran out in approximately 130 days, the CH4 emission factor was calculated as B0= 0.48 m3kg-1VS. Although this value is higher than the B0 estimated by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for Latin America (0.29 m3 kg-1 VS), it is in agreement with the B0 estimated for developed countries (0.45 and 0.48 m3 kg-1 VS, for the US and EU,...
