Bioeconomic Modeling of the Invasive Aquatic Plants Hydrilla verticillata (hydrilla), Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), and Pistia stratiotes (water lettuce) and their impacts on angler effort on Florida lakes AgEcon
Adams, Damian C.; Lee, Donna J..
The invasive aquatic plants Hydrilla verticillata (hydrilla), Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth), and Pistia stratiotes (water lettuce) have the potential to negatively impact recreational use of Florida lakes if consistent, adequate control expenditures are not made. In the mid-1990's, Florida significantly reduced its spending on invasive aquatic plant control measures, which resulted in a significant increase in needed control expenditures in subsequent years. This paper attempts to formalize a relationship between coverage of these invasive aquatic plants and angler effort on Florida lakes using data on 38 lakes over 20 years. Estimated regression coefficients are used to simulate control alternatives, and expenditure cost-benefit comparisons are...

Glyphosate Effectiveness in the Control of Macrophytes Under a Greenhouse Condition Planta Daninha
Cruz,C.; Silva,A.F.; Luna,L.V.; Yamauchi,A.K.F.; Garlich,N.; Pitelli,R.A..
The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of glyphosate, as Rodeo(r) formulation, to control Eichhornia crassipes, Pistia stratiotes, Salvinia molesta, Salvinia herzogii and Urochloa subquadripara, under greenhouse conditions. The doses assessed were (480, 960, 1440, 1920, 2400, 2880, 3360 and 3840 g ha-1 of glyphosate) with 0.5% of the Aterbane(r) BR surfactant and a control, with no herbicide application. All experiments were conducted in a completely randomized experimental design with ten replications. Applications were carried out by precision backpack sprayer at a CO2 constant pressure of 25 psi and spray solution consumption of 200 L ha-1. Product effectiveness was determined by assessing the growth inhibitions and phytotoxicity signals...

Morphoanatomical injuries in Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae) as a result of exposure to clomazone in water Anais da ABC (AABC)

Abstract Contamination of water sources due to herbicide is of great concern. Clomazone is a pesticide with a high contamination potential which could possibility lixiviate to water streams. Changes caused by residual herbicide include flora modifications which are generally detrimental for some species. The lack of morphological studies performed in aquatic plants exposed to herbicide-contaminated environments has encouraged the development of our research. For the first time, we present a study that aimed to evaluate leaf injuries visible to the naked eye as well as microscopical effects which may be caused by clomazone on Pistia stratiotes. Pistia stratiotes was subjected to five concentrations of clomazone. Our analysis showed leaf injuries,...

Remediation of nutrients runoff from feedlot by hydroponic treatment CIGR Journal
Rahman, Shafiqur.
Nutrient runoff from feedlot can contaminate surface and groundwater and may cause eutrophication if not managed properly. In this study, a cost-effective and environmentally friendly hydroponic treatment was compared with the standard Hoagland solution for treating feedlot runoff and evaluating plant growth and nutrient removal under greenhouse conditions. The hydroponic remediation method was evaluated in batches using 10 L of feedlot runoff and Hoagland solution individually applied in a plastic tub planted with water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), water lettuce (Postia stratiotes), and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) separately. Water samples were collected weekly and plant biomass were collected at the beginning and the end of the experiment. The sorghum...

Weevils associated with Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae) in the Central Amazon Region, with new records for Argentinorhynchus Brèthes (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) Biota Neotropica
Sousa,Wesley Oliveira de; Rosado-Neto,Germano Henrique; Marques,Marinêz Isaac; Adis,Joachim.
Data on the occurrence of ten weevils species associated with Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae), from Ilha de Marchantaria, Manaus (Amazonas, Brazil) are presented for the first time. During the period from March to August 2005, 809 weevils specimens were sampled on P. stratiotes, distributed across nine species allocated in five genera of Stenopelmini, in addition to one unidentified species in the Cryptorhynchinae. Among the Stenopelmini, Argentinorhynchus breyeri Brèthes, 1910 (N = 665) was the dominant species, with the highest abundance in July (N = 189) and the lowest in August (N = 11), while Ochetina uniformis Pascoe, 1881 (N = 63), Neochetina bruchi Hustache, 1926 (N = 45), Neohydronomus pulchellus Hustache, 1926 (N = 15), Neohydronomus affinis...
