An assessment of crop water productivity in the Indus and Ganges River Basins: current status and scope for improvement AgEcon

The Indus and Ganges River Basin, being the most populous in the world, is under extreme pressure to sustain food security. Production resources including water are being exploited to various levels from underdevelopment to heavy overexploitation. This report provides a bird’s eye view of the basin and focuses on the nexus between agricultural production and water consumption, making it possible to pinpoint the areas with high/low water productivity and identify the factors behind this, which helps to promote informed decision making in light of environmental sustainability.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar un patrón óptimo de cultivos en el sector agrícola de la Comarca Lagunera considerando de manera simultánea la maximización de la ganancia y la minimización del consumo de agua, dos criterios de optimización usualmente en conflicto. Se formularon dos modelos, uno de programación lineal para replicar el patrón actual de cultivos como base de referencia en el análisis comparativo, y un segundo modelo de programación compromiso que considera de manera simultánea los objetivos en conflicto. The FAO Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership organised a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to develop reference guidelines on water footprinting for livestock production systems and supply chains. The mandate of the TAG was to i) provide recommendations to monitor the environmental performance of feed and livestock supply chains over time so that progress towards improvement targets can be measured, ii) be applicable for feed and water demand of small ruminants, poultry, large ruminants and pig supply chains, iii) build on, and go beyond, the existing FAO LEAP guidelines and iv) pursue alignment with relevant international standards, specifically ISO 14040 (2006)/ISO 14044 (2006), and ISO 14046 (2014). The search for decision-making tools is essential in order to control agricultural practices and plan for sustainable agriculture that respects the environment. To this end, FAO has developed an evaluation model called AquaCrop, which covers most technical routes, including fertilization. In this perspective, this study focuses on the AquaCrop model (v6.1) to calibrate it for the simulation of lettuce crop yields (Lactuca sativa L), under different fertilization levels for the trial periods (2015/2016) and (2016/2017). Onze imagens Landsat 8, sendo três para 2014 e oito para 2015, e dados agrometeorológicos foram usados na modelagem da evapotranspiração (ET) e da produção de biomassa (BIO) em larga escala através da aplicação conjunta do algoritmo Simple Algorithm for Evapotranspiration Retrieving (SAFER) e do modelo da interceptação da radiação de Monteith, no Perímetro Irrigado Nilo Coelho, em Petrolina, PE. A inclusão das imagens do ano de 2014 foi devido à ausência de imagens sem nuvens durante o período chuvoso de 2015. As maiores taxas para ambos, ET e BIO, bem como as mais elevadas variações espaciais ocorreram em janeiro, dentro da estação chuvosa, sendo as médias respectivas de 3,6 ± 2,1 mm dia-1 e 112 ± 92 kg ha-1 dia-1. Livestock and water interactions in mixed crop-livestock farming systems of Sub-Saharan Africa: Interventions for improved productivity AgEcon

Focusing on mixed crop-livestock farming systems of sub-Saharan Africa, this review brings together the available knowledge in the various components of the livestock and water sectors. Through an analysis of livestock-water interactions, promising strategies and interventions to improve Livestock Water Productivity are proposed. In the biophysical domain, the numerous interventions relate to feed, water and animal management. These are interlinked with interventions in the socio-political-economic domain. The paper identifies critical research and development gaps in terms of methodologies for quantifying water productivity and integrating different scales, and also in terms of institutions and policies.

This is evident by the different definitions of productivity of water, though most of the definitions hinge around the benefits accrued from water use. The viewpoint of smallholder farmers’ regarding the productivity of water is important in order to promote the concept of productivity of water in a country like Tanzania. The main goal of this research was to determine the spatial-temporal agro-ecological indicators of water productivity in watersheds with diferent types of land use and occupation, using Landsat 8 images, agro-meteorological stations and application of Monteithand SAFER (Simple Algorithm for Retrieving Evapotranspiration) models to estimate the production biomass (BIO) and the actual evapotranspiration (ET), respectively. Incident global solar radiation (RS↓) is observed seasonality of radiation during the year.

Water Total Factor Productivity Growth of Rice and Corn Crops Using Data Envelopment Analysis – Malmquist Index (West Timor, Indonesia) CIGR Journal

This study aims to estimate staple food water productivity based on crop water use and subsequently aimed to analyze the total factor productivity growth using DEA-MI methods. The secondary panel data from 2000-2015 regarding climate data, main food harvested areas and main food production were applied. The results show that despite higher dependencies on rainwater, staple food production used a small part of the volume. Staple food water productivity showed a fluctuation and positive trends, falling in the range of global estimates but still below the upper value. Abstract Yield-improving and water-saving techniques assume great importance in the cultivation of banana plants under semiarid regions, prone to greater climate variability. The objective of this study was to evaluate yield and water-use efficiency (WUE) response of ‘Prata-Anã’ banana plants to combinations of plant densities and irrigation levels: three irrigation levels, 50, 75 and 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc), and four plant densities, 1,666 (3.0 x 2.0 m), 2,083 (3.0 x 1.6 m), 2,666 (3.0 x 1.25 m) and 3,333 (3.0 x 1.0) plants ha-1, evaluated in two production cycles.
