Abstract: The aim of this study was to characterize the structure and composition of the tree and shrub community in a 77-ha fragment of Restinga forest in Caraguatatuba, São Paulo, Brazil. In this fragment, forty 20 × 20-m plots (1.6 ha) were systematically allocated and all trees with a stem diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥4.8 cm were sampled. Sixteen plots were randomly chosen to also sample individuals with a DBH of between 1 and 4.8 cm. All individuals were tagged, identified to species level, and their diameters and heights were measured. A total of 2587 individuals (1616 ind./ha) from 119 species and 42 families were found with a DBH >4.8 cm, and 2659 individuals (4154 ind./ha) from 125 species and 38 families were found with a DBH >1 cm. COST OF IGNORANCE- EVALUATING A LAND AND WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN AgEcon
Hill, Christine M..
This paper outlines the impacts of ignoring the costs to the community of increased rural waterlogging and salinity. It identifies the cost of no further action, and the costs and benefits of undertaking a land and water management plan. The processes of developing and evaluating the plan are explained. Difficulties in obtaining data, both for the community and the economist, are discussed. Data availability then shapes the range of costs and benefits that can be evaluated. The paper looks at the process and results of a case study of a Land and Water Management Plan for an irrigation district in central New South Wales. The case study demonstrated all the complexities of community and professional conflict, difficulties in data availability, budget and...

Dispersal modes and fruiting periods in hyperseasonal and seasonal savannas, central Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Silva,Igor Aurélio; Cianciaruso,Marcus Vinicius; Batalha,Marco Antônio.
Seasonal savannas are characterized by an intense drought that influences their functioning. Hyperseasonal savannas experience additionally a waterlogging during the rainy season. In South America, the largest savanna environment is the Brazilian cerrado. To assess whether a particular dispersal mode or fruiting period is associated to the waterlogging, we examined dispersal and phenological groups in hyperseasonal and seasonal cerrado plant species. We compared the proportion of species and individuals in these groups with G-tests for independence in contingency tables. We did not find differences in the proportion of species; however, based on the proportion of individuals, the main dispersal strategy was anemochory in the hyperseasonal cerrado and...

Effect of flooding on survival and initial growth of Ocotea pulchella (Nees) Mez. seedlings in semi-controlled light conditions Acta Botanica
Pires,Luciana Andrea; Cardoso,Victor José Mendes.
Taking into account the occurrence of Ocotea pulchella in areas subjected to periodic flooding, this work aimed to evaluate the survival and initial development of Ocotea pulchella seedlings (2 months old) and juveniles (9 months old) in response to waterlogging under different light regimes by varying both light quantity and light quality, in order to test for possible flood tolerance of the species as affected by light conditions. Three levels of soil moisture (field capacity, mean flooding - only for seedlings - and full flooding) and four light treatments (full sun, neutral shade, far red enriched shading and neutral plus far red) were tested. The survival of seedlings and juveniles during one year was relatively high, whereas growth was negatively...

Geoecological drivers of cerrado heterogeneity and 13C natural abundance in oxisols after land-use change Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Neufeldt,Henry.
The 13C natural abundance technique was applied to study C dynamics after land-use change from native savanna to Brachiaria, Pinus, and Eucalyptus in differently textured Cerrado Oxisols. But due to differences in the d13C signatures of subsoils under native savanna and under introduced species, C substitution could only be calculated based on results of cultivated soils nearby. It was estimated that after 20 years, Pinus C had replaced only 5 % of the native C in the 0-1.2 m layer, in which substitution was restricted to the top 0.4 m. Conversely, after 12 years, Brachiaria had replaced 21 % of Cerrado C to a depth of 1.2 m, where substitution decreased only slightly throughout the entire profile. The high d13C values in the subsoils of the cultivated...

Morphological and Phenological Responses of Eragrostis plana Nees and Eragrostis pilosa (L.) P. Beauv. Plants Subjected to Different Soil Moisture Conditions Planta Daninha
CARLOTO,B.W.; BURIOL,G.A.; DORNELLES,S.H.B.; TRIVISIOL,V.S.; PERIPOLLI,M.; ESCOBAR,O.S..
ABSTRACT: Experiments were run in a greenhouse where samples of Eragrostis pilosa and Eragrostis plana, species that infest rice crops, were subjected to three soil moisture conditions (50% of soil water retention capacity (WRC), 100% of WRC, 10 cm water depth), simulating three different environments (upland, lowland and irrigated rice farm, respectively), with the aim of studying how these conditions affect the morphology and vegetative cycle of these plants, by means of development and growth assessments. Results show that each species responds differently when subjected to varying amounts of water in the soil. Soaking the soil with 10 cm of water was the treatment that most negatively influenced the development of E. plana plants, reducing the...

Morphological and physiological responses of açaí seedlings subjected to different watering regimes AGRIAMBI
Silvestre,Walter V. D.; Pinheiro,Hugo A.; Souza,Rodrigo O. R. de M.; Palheta,Lenilson F..
ABSTRACT Seedlings of açaí obtained from plant material native to floodplains (from Laranjeira and Muaná) and adapted to upland areas (cv. BRS-Pará and ecotype Hideo) were cultivated between March and October 2013 in a greenhouse, to test the hypothesis that water requirement for seedling production varies according to the origin of plant material. The seedlings were subjected to watering regimes corresponding to 40, 70, 100 and 130% of field capacity. Regardless of plant material, the production of vigorous seedlings was feasible only under irrigation of 100 and 130% of field capacity. The seedlings produced under 130% of field capacity showed higher plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, total leaf area, leaf and root biomass, total plant biomass...

Nitrate uptake and metabolism by roots of soybean plants under oxygen deficiency. Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Brandão,Andrea D.; Sodek,Ladaslav.
Nitrate is reported to improve tolerance of plants towards oxygen deficiency enabled by waterlogging of the root system, but the mechanism underlying the phenomenon remains poorly understood. We studied the metabolism of nitrate in roots exposed to hypoxia, using soybean plants growing in a hydroponic system after suspending aeration and covering the surface of the nutrient solution with mineral oil. Nitrate depletion from the medium was more intense under hypoxia than normoxia, but in the presence of chloramphenicol, consumption under hypoxia was significantly reduced. Nitrite accumulated in the medium in the state of hypoxia and this effect was partially eliminated by chloramphenicol. Nitrate consumption sensitive to chloramphenicol was attributed to...

Nitrogen source influences the antioxidative system of soybean plants under hypoxia and re-oxygenation Scientia Agricola
Borella,Junior; Becker,Rafael; Lima,Milene Conceição; Oliveira,Denise dos Santos Colares de; Braga,Eugenia Jacira Bolacel; Oliveira,Ana Claudia Barneche de; Amarante,Luciano do.
ABSTRACT: In this work, we compared nitrate-supplied plants (non-nodulated) with non-nitrate-supplied plants (nodulated) under oxygen privation of root system (hypoxia) and re-oxygenation (post-hypoxia; recovery) in order to verify whether N sources affect the antioxidant system during oxidative stress caused by hypoxia and post-hypoxia conditions. Antioxidant enzymatic activities, ascorbate redox state, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels were analyzed in roots and leaves of two soybean genotypes, Fundacep 53 RR and BRS Macota at reproductive stage R2, during hypoxia and post-hypoxia in an experiment carried out in a hydroponic system. The antioxidant system was strongly induced in roots of nitrate-supplied plants of both genotypes, with high...

Plant height based evapotranspiration model for eucalyptus CIGR Journal
Singh, Santosh Kumar; Verma, C. L.; Sharma, D. K..
Bio-drainage is an environmentally favored cheaper option for managing waterlogged areas and does not involve specialized skills and techniques for design. It may be used for any type of soils and climate without any topographical disturbance where engineering measures may not be economical or practical solution.  It is being recommended for controlling water logging, salinity, intercepting seepage and as an alternative to subsurface drainage for successful crop production. The most common tree recommended for bio-drainage is eucalyptus due to its high ET demand, tolerance to waterlogging, salinity and sodicity. Annual budgeting of ground water extraction is required for designing bio-drainage belt. ET demand of bio-drainage belt is an essential plant...

Seasonal changes of leaf Nitrogen content in trees of Amazonian floodplains Acta Amazonica
PAROLIN,Pia; ARMBRÜSTER,Nicole; JUNK,Wolfgang J..
In Amazonian floodplains the trees are exposed to extreme flooding of up to 230 days a year. Waterlogging of the roots and stems affects growth and metabolic activity of the trees. An increased leaf fall in the aquatic period and annual increment rings in the wood indicate periodical growth reductions. The present study aims at documenting seasonal changes of metabolism and vitality of adult trees in the annual cycle as expressed by changes of leaf nitrogen content. Leaves of six tree species common in floodplains in Central Amazonia and typical representants of different growth strategies were collected every month between May 1994 and June 1995 in the vicinity of Manaus, Brazil. Mean leaf nitrogen content varied between 1.3% and 3.2% in the non-flooded...
