A review of production systems on watermelon quality National Institute of Agronomic Research

Cultural practices have been reported to affect quality and phytonutrient content of watermelon [Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai]. Knowing which cultivars perform well under various technologies and production systems, and knowing how these systems affect quality and phytonutrient content is imperative to ensure high quality fruit. Organic production and grafting are two cultural practices that are increasing among watermelon producers. Each of these technologies have the potential to interact with cultivars to influence watermelon quality. This review discusses the effects organic culture, input level, and grafting have on watermelon fruit quality.

Characterization of watermelon fruitlet development National Institute of Agronomic Research

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus) fruit produce low amounts of ethylene during ripening and is therefore considered as a non-climacteric fruit. Here we examined the involvement of ethylene in early stages of fruit development. Ethylene production was high in ovary and young fruitlets but decreased at later stages of development. Increased fruit set was observed in plants treated with ethylene biosynthesis inhibitor. To identify genes involved in the process we isolated genes encoding for the rate-limiting enzyme in ethylene biosynthesis pathway, 1- aminocyclopropane-1-carcoxylate synthase (ACC synthase, ACS). Construction of watermelon SSH cDNA libraries induced by Fusarium oxysporum and analysis of expressed sequence tags National Institute of Agronomic Research

Suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) cDNA libraries were constructed with watermelon root induced by F. oxysporum race 1. The process of library construction was checked and analyzed; results showed that the technique was efficient in the subtractive hybridization. 562 ESTs with good quality were assembled to 550 contigs with DNAStar 5.0 software. After function annotation, the most prevalent category was disease and defense, which accounted for 33.5 % of the ESTs; the second category was signal transduction which accounted for 13.1 %. Systemic acquired resistance (SAR) was supposed to be the important element composing the resistance to F. oxysporum race 1 in PI 296341-FR after sequence analysis.

Effect of grafting on watermelon growth and yield Thai Agricultural

Wilt of watermelon especially caused by Fusarium is a common and serious problem all over the world. Grafting with bottle gourd is a unique solution to control wilt of watermelon. The experiment was conducted in the coastal region of Bangladesh with the direct involvement of the farmers. All the grafted watermelon plants remain alive up to harvesting while more than one-third non-grafted plants died from vegetative to fruiting stage. Fruit yield was observed one and half times higher in grafted fields as compared to non-grafted counterparts.

Electrophoretic spectra of seed storage protein in Cucumis melo and Citrullus vulgaris as a tool for cultivar differentiation National Institute of Agronomic Research

Reduced seed storage proteins from 60 cultivars of melon (Cucumis melo) and 52 cultivars of watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) have been investigated electrophoretically using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate. The cultivars are from the collection of the Institute of Plant Genetics Resources, Sadovo (Bulgaria). The data obtained suggest clearly expressed differences in electrophoretic profiles of components of 7S globulins both for melon and watermelon cultivars. Four phenotypic groups are proposed for melon cultivars (I, II, III, IV) and two (I, II) for watermelon cultivars. This information can be used for cultivar differentiation.

Expression and polymorphism of watermelon fruit ESTs National Institute of Agronomic Research

Over 8,000 ESTs were generated for watermelon and were assembled into 4,700 EST-unigenes (http://www.icugi.org). Microarray and Real-Time PCR analyses were used to examine differential expression of 832 of these EST-unigenes in developing and ripening watermelon fruit. RNA was isolated from watermelon fruits(in three sequential stages of development and ripening) and from young leaves of field grown plants (during three consecutive years). The microarray analysis identified 335 EST-unigenes differentially expressed (by at least two-fold when compared to leaf) in watermelon fruit during the early, ripening, or mature stage. Turkey is very rich in cucurbit genetic resources due to its diverse geographical and ecological situation. Turkey is one of the important diversity centers for cultivated cucurbits because of the adaptation to diverse ecological conditions as result of natural selection and also the farmers selection in accordance with their preference. National collection of Cucurbitaceae species at National Gene Bank of Turkey (AARI) consists of 2223 accessions. Honey bee brood pheromone has been used for boosting the rate of flower visitation by honey bees in cultures of a triploid watermelon cultivar with diploid plants as pollen-donors. The application of brood pheromone had several consequences on the quality production parameters of the triploid culture, especially on the average of fruits per plant, the weight of fruits and on the Brix degree, all these parameters were higher and with statistically different significance from the control. Em face da necessidade de racionalização e melhor manejo de uso da agua que, para a regiao semi-arida, e indubitavelmente o principal fator limitante para producao agricola, estudou-se no Centro de Pesquisa Agropecuaria do Tropico Semi-Arido (CPATSA-EMBRAPA), a possibilidade do uso de potes de barro para fins de irrigacao. Os estudos consistiram na instalacao de potes de forma isolada (enchidos manualmente) e, numa outra alternativa, com os potes interconectados por meio de eletrotubos de 1/2" de diametro (principio de vasos comunicantes), ligados diretamente a um deposito de agua mantido a nivel constante. Methodology of tetraploid induction plants and expression of microsatellite alleles in triploid watermelon National Institute of Agronomic Research

Methods to obtain tetraploid watermelon plants from germinating seeds by treatments with chromosome doubling chemicals have been assayed and some tetraploid plants obtained by such treatments were pollinated with a diploid to obtain triploid watermelons. Three concentrations each of dinitroaniline (12 to 15 mg.L-1) and colchicine (300 to 500 mg.L-1), using three exposure durations (12 to 36 h), were compared for efficiency of tetraploid induction on germinating seeds of five watermelon cultivars. Micropropagation of an elite F1 watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) hybrid from the shoot tip of field grown plants BABT

The aim of this work was to develop a protocol for rapid micropropagation of an elite F1 hybrid watermelon cultivar using shoot tip of field-grown plants. Maximum frequency (73%) of shoot tip showed growth response in MS medium supplemented with 5 mg l-1 benzyl adenine (BA) and 0.1 mg l-1 indole-3 acetic acid (IAA). Upon transfer to cytokinin-enriched medium, the cultures produced multiple shoots and 2.0 mg l-1 BA was optimum in this respect. Addition of gibberellic acid (GA3) in the multiplication medium resulted in better growth of shoots. Morphological characterization of Korean and Turkish watermelon germplasm National Institute of Agronomic Research

A total of 67 watermelon accessions of Korean (37 accessions) and Turkish (27 accessions) germplasm and 3 accessions of other species were characterized for morphological characteristics. The accessions were characterized according to UPOV descriptor list for 56 characters (6 seedling, 4 plant, 11 leaf, 5 flower, 23 fruit and 7 seed). Eight quantitative characters (hypocotyl length, cotyledon width, cotyledon length, fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, thickness of outer layer of pericarp and soluble solid content) were also measured.
