Droplet deposition during spray and leaf pH in aquatic weed control Scientia Agricola
Costa,Neumárcio Vilanova da; Martins,Dagoberto; Rodella,Roberto Antonio; Costa,Lívia Duarte Neves de Camargo da.
The morphological diversity of leaf surface and structures such as trichomes, stomata, cuticle, and waxes that exists among plant species can have great influence on the adherence and deposition of spray droplets, as well as on herbicide absorption. The aim of this research was to study leaf pH and to evaluate wetting areas after applications of solution surfactants on the following aquatic weeds: Enhydra anagallis, Eichhornia crassipes, Heteranthera reniformis, and Typha subulata. The aquatic weeds were grown in reservoirs containing water under open air conditions and their leaf tissues were collected when the plants reached full development (before flowering). The mean leaf pH varied between 5.50 and 7.50; E. anagallis should be pointed out for...

Enhancing the water repellency of wood surfaces by atmospheric pressure cold plasma deposition of fluorocarbon film. Repositório Alice
CADEMARTORI, P. H. G. de; STAFFORD, L.; BLANCHET, P.; MAGALHAES, W. L. E.; BOLZON DE MUNIZ, G. I..
In this study, fluorocarbon thin filmsweredepositedonthe surfaceofwhite spruce andBrazilian cedarwoods via atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge in the afterglow mode with octafluoropropane gas. A pretreatment with oxygen plasma was introduced before the thin film deposition to determine if this plasma condition could increase the wood nano/micro roughness, helping to improve the hydrophobicity of the surface. The optimal conditions of water repellency for both woods were examined in terms of their resistance to aging in controlled conditions. The water contact angle measurements showed a hydrophobic surface with a stable angle for both woods. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the presence of CF, CF2 and CF3 functional groups after the...

Simulated effect of wetting/drying periods for two textural soils amended with biochar at a catchment scale CIGR Journal
Villagra-Mendoza, Karolina; Carvajal-Vanegas, Dorian; Beck-Broichsitter, Steffen; Horn, Rainer.
Biochar is considered as an option to ameliorate soil functions, by improving soil physical and hydraulic soil properties. This study investigated the effect of biochar and of wetting and drying cycles on the water infiltration at laboratory and at a hypothetical watershed scenario. In the laboratory, test samples with 2.5 and 5% (by dry mass) of a mango-wood biochar were added to a sandy and sandy loam soil material. Cumulative infiltration was determined after simulated intense wetting and drying cycles, by drying the samples at 30°C for three consecutive days. Additionally, biochar amended soil hydraulic parameters, obtained at the laboratory, were used to simulate the water discharge of a hypothetical watershed, with the Soil and Water Assessment Tool...

Surface wettability of Brazilian tropical wood flooring treated with He plasma. Repositório Alice
CADEMARTORI, P. H. G. de; NISGOSKI, S.; MAGALHAES, W. L. E.; BOLZON DE MUNIZ, G. I..
This study investigated the effect of plasma treatment on changes of surface wettability of wood flooring from two Brazilian tropical species, Hymenaea spp. (rode locus) and Tabebuia spp. (lapacho). Wood flooring samples were plasma treated at low pressure in a helium atmosphere. Energy level was set at 100 W and four glow discharge times (5, 15, 30 and 45 s) were tested. Changes in wettability were investigated by measuring apparent contact angle, droplet volume and spreading contact area. The results showed less susceptibility of lapacho wood to the plasma treatments, while reduction of apparent contact angle in rode locus wood reached up to 76% for longer discharge times. In general, discharge time of 15 s produced the same effect as discharge of 45 s...
