Design, construction and evaluation of a sprayer drift measurement system CIGR Journal
Azizpanah, Amir; Rajabipour, Ali; Alimardani, Reza; Kheiralipour, Kamran; Ghamari, Bahram; Mohammadi, Vahid.
Spray drift study for reducing environmental hazards and protecting crops is of high importance as the pesticides used today are more active and many are non-selective. Drift potential can be restricted by assessing and optimizing equipment design, application parameters, the liquid spray properties, type of formulation and environmental conditions. The aim of this research was to design, construct and assess an intelligent system to determine the level of the spraying drift. The main parts of the system were liquid supply mechanism, pipes and nozzles, a controlled pneumatic system to pressurize the liquid, a nozzle moving system with a controlling panel and a tunnel for wind providing and control. To assess the performance of sprayer and drift of...

Experimental evaluation of bulk charcoal pad configuration on evaporative cooling effectiveness CIGR Journal
Korese, Joseph Kudadam; Hensel, Oliver.
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the performance of bulk charcoal pad configuration, experimentally. For this, a number of experiments have been conducted in a wind tunnel in order to evaluate the pressure drop, cooling efficiency and specific water consumption as a function of air velocity, water flow rate and pad configuration. The test were carried out at six levels of air velocity (0.12, 0.51, 0.82, 1.05, 1.10 and 1.14 m s-1), three water flow rates (2.2, 3.2 and 5.2 l min-1) and three pad configurations: single layer pad (SLP), double layer pad (DLP) and triple layer pad (TLP) made out of small and large size charcoal particle of equivalent diameter 30 mm and 50 mm respectively. It was found that pressure drop range of small size charcoal pads...

Potential of adjuvants to reduce drift in agricultural spraying REA
Oliveira,Rone B. de; Antuniassi,Ulisses R.; Mota,Alisson A. B.; Chechetto,Rodolfo G..
The reduction of pesticide spraying drift is still one of the major challenges in Brazilian agriculture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of different adjuvant products, such as surfactants, drift retardants, mineral oil and vegetable oil for reducing drift in agricultural spraying. The experiment consisted of quantifying drift of sprayings of 18 adjuvants dissolved in water under controlled conditions in a wind tunnel. Tests were performed in triplicates with spraying nozzles type Teejet XR8003 VK, pressure of 200kPa and medium drops. Solutions sprayed were marked with Brilliant Blue dye at 0.6% (m v-1). The drift was collected using polyethylene strips transversally fixed along the tunnel at different distances from the nozzle and...

Potential risk of drift from inclined fan nozzles AGRIAMBI
Moraes,Eder D. de; Saab,Otávio J. G. A.; Gandolfo,Marco A.; Marubayashi,Rodrigo Y. P.; Gandolfo,Ulisses D..
ABSTRACT Pest, disease and weed control in large-scale crops depend on the application of agrochemicals. These applications are subject to several factors that can lead to drift. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of spray nozzles with inclined flat jet, on the drift. The drift was collected in a 10 m wind tunnel, with a spray system inside. The samples were collected in 5 horizontal points, from 2.0 to 6.0 m away from the spray nozzle and 5 points in the vertical, from 0.1 to 0.5 m away from the lower base of the wind tunnel, totaling 25 sample points. The mixture applied was glyphosate (isopropylamine salt, 1080 g a.e. ha-1) with 2,4-D (dimethylamine salt, 1.005 g a.e. ha-1). The nozzles J3D 100 025, JGC 120 02, JAP 110 015 and ADI...

Spray adjuvant characteristics affecting agricultural spraying drift REA
OLIVEIRA,RONE B. DE; ANTUNIASSI,ULISSES R.; GANDOLFO,MARCO A..
This study defined the main adjuvant characteristics that may influence or help to understand drift formation process in the agricultural spraying. It was evaluated 33 aqueous solutions from combinations of various adjuvants and concentrations. Then, drifting was quantified by means of wind tunnel; and variables such as percentage of droplets smaller than 50 μm (V50), 100 μm (V100), diameter of mean volume (DMV), droplet diameter composing 10% of the sprayed volume (DV0.1), viscosity, density and surface tension. Assays were performed in triplicate, using Teejet XR8003 flat fan nozzles at 200 kPa (medium size droplets). Spray solutions were stained with Brilliant Blue Dye at 0.6% (m/ v). DMV, V100, viscosity cause most influence on drift hazardous....

Spray drift and droplet spectrum from dicamba sprayed alone or mixed with adjuvants using air-induction nozzles PAB
Alves,Guilherme Sousa; Kruger,Greg Robert; Cunha,João Paulo Arantes Rodrigues da.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the spray drift and droplet spectrum of dicamba applied alone or with potential drift-reducing adjuvants, using air-induction flat fan nozzles. Standard (XR and TT) and air-induction (AIXR and TTI) nozzles were evaluated in a wind tunnel. The adjuvants used were polymer, ammonium sulfate, vegetable oil, and phosphatidylcholine. The applications were conducted at 276 kPa pressure and 3.5 m s-1 wind speed. The droplet spectrum was measured using a laser diffraction system. Round strings were used as drift collectors, positioned perpendicularly to the wind direction, at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 12 m from the nozzle. Drift was calculated by quantifying, through fluorimetry, a fluorescent tracer added to each...

Wind tunnel investigation of dynamic trimming on upwind sail aerodynamics ArchiMer
Aubin, Nicolas; Augier, Benoit; Sacher, Matthieu; Bot, Patrick; Hauville, Frédéric; Flay, Richard G.j..
An experiment was performed in the Yacht Research Unit’s Twisted Flow Wind Tunnel (University of Auckland) to test the effect of dynamic trimming on three IMOCA 60 inspired mainsail models in an upwind (βAW = 60°) unheeled configuration. This study presents dynamic fluid structureinteractionresultsinwellcontrolledconditions(wind, sheetlength)withadynamictrimming system. Trimming oscillations are done around an optimum value of CFobj previously found with a static trim. Different oscillation amplitudes and frequencies of trimming are investigated. Measurements are done with a 6 component force balance and a load sensor giving access to the unsteady mainsail sheet load. The driving CFx and optimization target CFobj coefficient first decrease at low reduced...
